On December 21 1975, 10,000 men of the Palestinian Yarmouk brigade from Syria launched with artillery, mortars and missiles the assault on Zahle, defended by its inhabitants with the help of the Lebanese army. It was one of the first large-scale military operations in the Lebanese conflict.

On December 6 1975, while Pierre Gemayel was in Damascus on an official visit, Christian militiamen including the Phalangist Joseph Saadeh, slauthered Muslims in the neighborhoods of Saifï, Gemmayze and the Port in response to the assassination of four young Christians including Saadeh’s son, killing between 200 and 400 deaths.
