I have seen people who are focused and and dedicated to a cause , somehow ,knowing Prakriti Prasad as a parenting coach gave me an insight into the deeper meaning of commitment towards a purpose. While having a conversation with her about her noble mission of bringing about a healthy parent - child ecosystem, I realised that she has taken a pledge to pursue her passion of perfecting the process of parenting. Well, let’s call it an experience or a journey— selfless, sublime and solicitous one.

Studies are being performed and research conducted by experts , these reveal that parents have developed certain behavioral expressions, like , getting too inquisitive about all that quite a grown up child is doing. Psychologists call it too much parental engagement. According to a Stanford led research, active participation of both parents and their child must be of the texture of soulful interaction, like, watching a good series and knowing each other’s opinion about it or discussing the plot . Grown up kids or teens do not take over-involvement as care, instead they put it under the category of mistrust.

Parents today often look for teachable moments but they fail to identify , what a child needs from a parent, not teachings, but empathy, love and interesting talks. Quality parenting helps children grow their cognitive and emotional skills.

Prakriti is a senior journalist and a columnist who has worked with several leading publications of the country, including The Times of India, Business Standard, Indian Express and The Himalayan Times for over two decades. She has written and edited coffee-table books for The Dainik Jagran and The Times of India. Besides being a freelance writer, she espouses social causes and anchors events on issues close to her heart. As a crusader of Swachh Bharat Mission, she anchored mega events of Dettol Banega Swachh India with Vidya Balan, the national sanitation brand ambassador, in Patna and Lucknow.

Having written on a range of topics from wildlife, traffic, media, marketing, advertising; from hard news stories to business and education features, Prakriti steered towards writing for the youth and children. What is so interesting about her story is that she never took criticism as a negative feedback, she converted it into an opportunity to learn something that made her inquisitive. Although body shaming is a severe crime as it depletes the mental health of an individual , however Malvika countered it with self development and growth . She has specialized in plant based diet and deals with all categories of people, ranging from non vegetarian, vegetarians or vegans .

VEENA NAGDA, where passion marries profession ........................

Decades ago, a typical Gujrati family meant ; boys and men at work or study or business and ,a girl , post puberty, knitting or preparing the relishing chutneys with her mother and aunts for the rich snacks that the whole family would have together, when the men came back home. However, It wouldn’t be just to say that every family in Gujrat smelt of the pungent patriarchy, to some, girls were no less than boys, but most of them believed that women were supposed to take charge of kitchen and engage in some craft that could keep them active. Veena Nagda was one of those girls who were stopped from going outside for the reason that a girl needed the safe zone of home , once she stepped into her teens. This was merely the beginning of a journey which was going to be an inspiration for millions of her tribe.

Generation x, can be called the technology deprived generation, when sitting at home didn’t mean growing a Nyka, like Falguni Nayar did, instead it was sailing on a slow boat that was waiting for its sailer to come like the prince charming and take charge of the rudder. Things were however not made to happen in this usual way for Veena as she felt a deep seated urge that spoke to her at a higher level , “this is not your story, you have to write a different one”

Q What brought you to this unique profession ?

I am from a Gujrati family. Born and brought up in a conservative family of Kutch, I was not allowed to go ahead for college education.When I passed my 10th grade, my mother said that I should stay at home and learn embroidery. I had no choice as it was a kind of well established fact that a young girl had to be at home to learn some feminine stuff. I had no complaints but something inside me was trying to pull me towards an undefined goal. I didn’t know much , I continued with embroidery. Sitting frpm 10 to 6 with my mother, I learnt and practiced a lot of embroidery patters. we did mirror work, Kutch work , etc

Q How did embroidery get you to Hena designing ?

Yes, anyone will think that these two arts are so different. I was quite absorbed in embroidery and pretty much occupied with small orders from neighbourhood.

We used to get Rs 6 for 100 mirrors in a mirror work order. It was very popular then. One fine day our family doctor asked me to do hena for his daughter on her wedding. In the beginning I was hesitant but due to family ties, I gave my nod to it. My sister thought that I could do the henna well as by then I had gained perfection in embroidery. Take a cone and just lay down your embroidery pattern there, she opined. Since there was no question of safety issues, I didn’t find any problem in getting everyone’s nod. Eventually I went ahead, expecting nothing in return except for a gift from the doctor as he used to travel abroad for his work. I can not forget the day as it brought to me a pleasant surprise.
