Six elephants have just been moved for the second part of rehabilitation to Zimbabwe's Panda Masuie Forest. The area was once used for hunting, but with the help of our partners, we're making it safe for animals again!

Thank you.

From founder Nick Milne - “8 years ago today I watched the sun rise over the the lake from the deck at Bumi Hills Safari Lodge. I couldn't have imagined then what I would achieve and experience over the next 8 years after leaving the lodge and starting the anti-poaching unit which eventually developed into the fully fledged foundation and conservation unit it is today. This morning's sunrise from the Bumi Hills Foundation HQ is all the inspiration I need to keep going for the next 8 years and beyond!” 👊🏼

The hurtful truth...

The number of wild animals living on Earth is set to fall by two-thirds by 2020, according to a new report, part of a mass extinction that is destroying the natural world upon which humanity depends.

Wild is Life Trust and ZEN

We have "latch on"!!!
After SIX somewhat nerve wracking and tough days and nights, little Sebastien and Mirabelle have finally made the ultimate bond of proper suckling.
It just goes to show how persistence usually pays off ... so many life lessons to be learned from the wild, if only humans would watch and take heed.
We will continue to bottle feed Sebastien and stable him at night, to ensure that he is safe and warm. His immune system will not be up to scratch yet so he needs to be handled with extreme care. However, his mother is able to come and go as she sees fit and has access to him at all times.
Whew! ###

PLEASE BE ON THE LOOK OUT ….. AND keep your distance

KARIBA – BADLY SNARED ELE

A report from a Resident was received early evening Tuesday 29/8 of an ele with a damaged and swollen back left leg, proceeding down Mashumba road/path. This is by the Y junction to Lake Nav and comes out down by the Municipal Water station opposite Mahombekombe turn off.

He is in agony and was being aggressive with people and vehicles coming too close.

Parks were immediately notified and were near the area but he had disappeared into the bush when they arrived.

An alert was posted on the Parks & Wildlife whatsapp Platform.

A Parks patrol was put out this morning/Wednesday 30/8 and they caught up with him in the gully near the Municipal Water station opposite Mahombekombe turn off.

We have not managed to get photos of the damaged leg but the Rangers have seen that it definitely looks like another VERY DEEP WIRE SNARE on his left hind/back leg between the knee and foot.

The Resident darter Carl Nicholson is on standby and we are trying to contact Drs Dutlow and Marabini/Aware Trust who are still in Mana Pools. This leg requires veterinary attention.

We will lose sight of him and need to find him again when we have contacted the Vets, so please …………

PLEASE DO NOT
Go close to this elephant
Intimidate with stone throwing, noise etc.

Give him some respect and right of way.

He is in extreme pain due to the damage caused by a human and we do not want people causing him to defend himself and in turn harming someone.

PLEASE pass on message as he may cross the main road by Mahombekombe and head down to the shoreline

Please advise on below when reporting.

1. WHERE ABOUT SEEN
2. TIME OF DAY OR NIGHT
3. IS HE STILL ON HIS OWN, IF NOT HOW MANY OTHER ELEPHANTS ARE WITH HIM
4. ANY PHOTOS TAKEN OF THE DAMAGED LEG

DO NOT APPROACH THE ANIMAL

All information possible will assist with the finding of the animal and the sooner the more chance of removing the snare, giving any needed medical attention and saving another life.
THANK YOU ….

If anyone has any information on the persons that are laying these snares, please contact any of the below numbers. Your report will be treated as sensitive and confidential

Bumi Hills Anti Poaching Unit (BHAPU)

*MORE ILLEGAL NETTING RECOVERED AND DESTROYED*

Another 2 km of illegal twine netting and other prohibited fishing gear has gone up in smoke following another successful joint operation between ZRP and the Bumi Hills Anti Poaching Unit (BHAPU) rangers recently.

Fortunately these nets were detected and recovered fairly soon after they had been laid and therefore we managed to release most of the fish that had become entangled, all of which were large bream over 1kg!

Bumi Hills Anti Poaching Unit (BHAPU)

*ANOTHER ZAMBIAN POACHING GANG BUST*

Our rangers brought in another huge haul today! Approximately 3km of twine nets, boats and fish all courtesy of Zambian poachers illegally fishing and camping in Zimbabwe.

As with most of the Zambians we arrest the accused in this case come from Chief Chipepo's area in Zambia, does anyone have contact details for the chief?

We would not only like to advise him that these fishermen will be spending some time in the Zimbabwean prison system but also discuss the rampant poaching emanating from his area and look for solutions towards putting a stop to it.

Darted, winched, crated and driven: The remarkable uplifting effort to help protect 500 African elephants

First, catch your elephant. As the starting point for a hugely ambitious conservation project, it sounds like the easy bit. The reality, as we discovered, is a little trickier. A lot trickier, in fact. We're in Malawi, with African Parks, a non-profit organisation that has taken a leading role i...
