I first met Tessa and Dave Treadway on spring break release from the Colorado College. I was 19, driving in my buddies 2wd Toyota Corolla, listening to a stack of CD's his ex girlfriend made for him when they were likely 16. Time isn't kind to things that were once precious, and imagining their "last dance" high school gymnasium romance was good humor on the long road to Golden, BC. MiniDV tapes were the medium of the day, and having recently bought a Panasonic DVX-100 camera, I learned what all other filmmakers have; that all you need is a dream and enough balls to call yourself a Director. Our film company at the time was named after a stolen bottle of top shelf whisky, a tipped hat to living free, on the fringe, and as strange as possible. The early seeds of Sweetgrass.

On the wings of that, I got Daves number, and was soon hustling my mother for a $100 loan to chase him and Tessa on a rented snowmobile. I was star-struck as f**k,
and this was my big break mom. Everything was going to make sense after those days, the sponsorships would flow.

Some 15 plus years later, I was chasing Tessa and her kids last week, working on a new project for Rossignol. Life has evolved for us all-- kids, work, homes, adventure, and the ups and downs of all that. When Dave fell into a crevasse in 2019, Tessa was left on her own, a single mother raising three boys. The tragedy and her strength provoke both deep sighs and smiles. Being around their energy was, decidedly, awesome. As we sat around the TV putting the kids to sleep with Sweetgrass youtube odds and ends, she mentioned that her late husband Dave modeled his whole parenting philosophy off our film Valhalla. And with that, I say, I love the work that we do. And the people that we get to do it with. Thanks to , Matt Cote, , , and the .family .

We couldn’t think of a better time to share this news than during as the goal of this film was to shed light on the struggles so many of us face with the often stigmatized challenges of mental illness, and to provide a look at how it’s possible to find help and growth through them.

In celebration of women and snow, we present Sisterhood of Skiing: a film celebrating the camaraderie, power, and love that women bring to the mountains.
Along the way we were able to connect with an incredibly inspiring ensemble; each demonstrating the strength of femininity in their own distinct way. Thank you to all of the ladies who contributed to make this project happen, and to the countless others who we were not able to fit into these 5 minutes. Whether it’s depression, anxiety, thoughts of su***de, loneliness, ‘just’ a bad day, or anything in between, each of us faces challenges with mental health at some level. Despite this commonality, it can be incredibly difficult to share or reveal our struggles, which all too often are stigmatized by society or even our own internal perspectives.
In making Ups and Downs, we set out with to confront and explore these issues head on because no one should have to feel ashamed for needing help, for hurting - for going through intrinsically human emotions.
We hope that this film will contribute towards shifting the mindset we all hold towards mental health while reminding anyone experiencing psychological strife large or small that they are not alone.
Thanks to everyone involved in the production and most importantly to Drew for taking this courageous step forward to poignantly lay his personal journey bare before the lens.

You know when you're sitting around the christmas tree/menorah/thanksgiving turkey and your grandma says, "Oh my gaaawd, can you believe how fast this year has gone? how is it ____ again?"

That's kind of how it feels to be releasing the dobermans on you this go. Somehow, someway, we've arrived at our 6th Shambhala Aftermovie. Each year, we go back to the drawing board, asking ourselves how to create/recreate outside of the boundaries that we're annually expanding.

The BEST film family always collides at the farm, and it's the team and collaboration that make the below so damn gorgeous.

Coming at you: 'Nightshift' - Ep 1 of our Steeped in Tradition Series for Alta Ski Area.

When the lifts stop spinning and the sun drops below the ridgelines most of us pop the boots off and call it a day, however for others on the hill its just the beginning to their day.

Thanks to the snowcat crew for all of their hard work each and every night to keep the slopes in shape, and also our hats off to Alta for supporting creative filmmaking that allowed us to get outside the box of your everyday ski marketing materials on this one!

Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas at Alta Ski Area. Everyone was happy to see Santa out on the hill aside from a few tykes who's hearts were broken as they wondered how this guy was going to get their presents made in time for the big day. Don't worry kids: Santa just needed to blow off a little steam on the slopes - we can confirm he is back hard at work in a dimly lit factory somewhere near the North Pole ensuring that all your wishes will come through on the 25th.

Call for Intern Applications!

Sweetgrass is looking for a new intern in the Salt Lake Area to sign on starting December.

We are seeking motivated applicants with filmmaking experience whom are interested in entering the field of adventure filmmaking, and the eventual prospect of signing on with a full time position with us as an assistant. Duties for the next 6 months will include shooting and editing short video content, assisting in social media, stock footage and data management, and the occasional preparation of caffè macchiatos.

This position will be paid depending on experience, and work will be on a part time basis for 6 months, at which point we will review the option of offering a staff position.

As part of this job you will be provided with a pass to Alta Ski Area - ski experience is required.

One of the most impressive humans on skis we've ever had the pleasure of working with, or for that matter ever seen rip period, Hoji has been an inspiration to us for years. Growing up watching him on the big screen in films by companies like Matchstick Productions, it was a dream come true when we finally did wind up out in the snow with the man himself on productions of our own such as Afterglow, where we strapped him in all manner of LED's and watched him destroy pow through the darkest hours of the night. Couldn't be more excited to see this new release chronicling Eric Hjorleifson's career as a skier, innovator and legend - coming to a theatre near you soon.

We've had the pleasure of working with the iconic Connie Marshall over the past few years to help cultivate media for Alta Ski Area - it will be sad seeing her move into retirement this year, but her 4 decades+ spent at Alta have created an indelible, inspiring mark on the community that won't soon be forgotten. Plus, we get the sense that we'll be seeing more from Connie for years to come as she continues playing a role in non-profits, the visitors bureau and more, pushing this mountain community forward in an ever positive direction.

She started working at Alta when tickets cost $6.50 a pop. Now, as she prepares to retire, she leaves behind a legacy that spans four decades.
