Has the Church sold out? Maybe that’s a bit overdramatic. Though it sometimes seems that culture is influencing the Church more than the Church is influencing culture.
The way of the film industry in recent years has often been to sacrifice developed characters and compelling stories in favour of “messaging,” sure to tickle the itching ears of progressive America.
And for the Church, the temptation is to follow suit. To sacrifice gospel conviction and hope in favour of soft affirmations, vaguely approving whatever people want to believe.
Life is undoubtedly much more comfortable when everyone likes you, and God’s Word is not remotely in vogue. If we preach the values God has laid out for us, we will come up against the values of our current culture. But we have this warning in Jesus' rebuke of the Pharisees:
“‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’” (Matthew 15:8-9)
Are we treating the commandments of men as doctrines of God? Are we elevating the current progressive “message” above timeless gospel truth? Are we worshipping God with our words but abandoning Him in our hearts?
Brothers and sisters, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2)
Don’t sell out; stand firm for truth.
