We all face challenges when it comes to our individual circumstances. We may at times feel limited by not having access to all the resources we feel necessary in our journey to speaking up. However, we can always turn to the scriptures for incredible examples of times when speaking up may not have been comfortable, but it had an everlasting impact.

This is the first of a series we are starting called Speak Up Stories. This series allows us to not only give women a chance to speak up about the experiences that have supported their voices, but also to let their stories inspire the rest of us on our own speak up journeys. Our guest in this episode is McArthur Krishna, an artist and storyteller who has actively amplified women’s voices. She is co-author of the Guides to Heavenly Mother, and Girls Who Choose God and shares with us her passion for engaging with the world through speaking up.

One of the common side effects of effective speaking up is a natural tendency toward leadership. Others will look to you, will listen to your ideas, and will open themselves to your influence if your words and personal way of being are empowering to them. Today’s episode centers on the connection between speaking up and natural leadership.

This episode discusses the consequences of speaking up and the fear of negative consequences we experience that keeps us from taking the steps to speak up.

Fear is the main emotion we experience that keeps us from speaking up when we might need to. We’re afraid of others’ responses, that we might feel embarrassed, and above all that our reactions might negatively affect our close connections with others.

This week we bring you part two of this practical series, What to Say and How to Say It.

We only get hung up about what to say and how to say it when we are approaching difficult conversations. This is usually when emotions are high, which can sabotage our efforts. In this conversation we highlight John Gottman’s research on how to bring things up in a way that protects yourself and others from feeling attacked or defensive. We also cover speaking in your own voice and specific verbiage that can help you to be both clear and kind.

Sorting it out personally; this is where speaking up starts. If we want to speak up and have it be effective, we’ve got to get clear in our thoughts and our feelings first. We need to know and understand our concerns, and be ready to own them. There are specific and tangible things we can do to hone in on what exactly we need from ourselves and others, including praying, writing, and asking ourselves good questions. Listen to the latest episode here http://speakupsister.net/

Sometimes we put off speaking up. It might seem to be too intimidating and we can rationalize that it can wait. But in the meantime it sabotages our peace, your growth and our relationships. We can follow the Savior’s example and speak up. We can trust that we will have sufficient courage and words to say things that really matter. And we can build this skill so it becomes easier and easier to say what we need to say.

Eve and Adam were created equal in power and glory, equal in the depths and responsibilities of their stewardships, and equal in the difficulty of their ultimate choices on behalf of all people on the Earth. And our part is no less.

We have the responsibility of Eve. At times we will see something that is needful that others don't see and we will need to speak up and share our insight. And when we do, it will often open the door to greater growth and opportunity.

This week our podcast centers on effective ways to speak up in a group by making room for all opinions, and not making difficulties because someone doesn’t see things the way we do.

We believe our contribution is more effective when we can actively invite and sit with more than one opinion. There are many ways to Jesus Christ, and it’s the thrill of the hunt to find other perspectives that can bring us closer to him, as well as closer to each other.

Many women take on the role of peacemaker in their close relationships. It can do so much to create an environment where others can thrive. But it can also hold them hostage.

There’s a big difference between contributing to peace and believing you are responsible for keeping the peace. We can differentiate between the two and follow the Savior’s example to bring peace and at the same time honor agency.

Sometimes we don’t speak up because we don’t want others to think poorly of us, sometimes we don’t because we are concerned about how it will affect our important relationships. But going against our inner sense of what we must do and say can damage our ability to trust ourselves.

Join us as we build on the truth that we have exactly what we need to speak up in the current moment. We have both the faith and courage to speak up, and we can count on God’s support and strength as we do.

Join this conversation about women being empowered to speak up and contribute when we understand that we have a Heavenly Mother and she is a fully participating partner.

Knowing that she plays an active role is essential for us as we actively fill our essential roles. And understanding this and believing it, will support us in speaking up, creating, nurturing, producing and contributing in all ways we are being called to do.

In episode 16 we talk about how women are empowered to speak up and contribute in our own lives when we understand that we have a Heavenly Mother.

We can acknowledge her, talk about her, and involve her. Because nothing specific has been revealed about Heavenly Mother, some have come to believe that any mention of her is discouraged by the church. This is simply not true, and it is appropriate for the women of God, Her daughters, to bring her back into the light.
