OpenAI Used Kenyan Workers Making $2 an Hour to Filter Traumatic Content from ChatGPT: Despite their integral role in building ChatGPT, the workers faced grueling conditions and low pay.

A Time investigation published on Wednesday reported that OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, paid Kenyan workers less than $2 an hour to filter through tens of thousands of lines of text to help make its chatbot safer to use.

The workers were tasked to label and filter out toxic data from ChatGPT’s training dataset and were forced to read graphic details of NSFW content such as child s*xual abuse, be******ty, murder, su***de, torture, self-harm, and in**st, Time reported.

ChatGPT has been soaring in popularity since the machine learning-powered chatbot was launched by OpenAI in late November. Millions of people were impressed by the app’s advanced writing skills and have employed the app for a variety of purposes, from writing news articles to songs.

But the bot was not always so eloquent. Its predecessor, GPT-3, often produced s*xist, violent, and racist text because the model was trained on a dataset that was scraped from billions of internet pages. In order to launch ChatGPT, OpenAI needed a way to filter out all of the toxic language from its dataset, fast.

OpenAI partnered with Sama, a data labeling partner based in San Francisco that claims to provide developing countries with “ethical” and “dignified digital work,” to detect and label toxic content that could be fed as data into a filtering tool for ChatGPT. Sama recruited data labelers in Kenya to work on behalf of OpenAI, playing an essential role in making the chatbot safe for public usage.

Despite their integral role in building ChatGPT, the workers faced grueling conditions and low pay. One Kenyan worker who was responsible for reading and labeling text for OpenAI told TIME that “he suffered from recurring visions after reading a graphic description of a man having s*x with a dog in the presence of a young child.” The workers took home wages between $1.32 and $2 an hour, based on seniority and performance.

“That was torture,” the Sama worker told Time. “You will read a number of statements like that all through the week. By the time it gets to Friday, you are disturbed from thinking through that picture.”

The fatal shooting of a Black teenager by a white man in Columbus, Ohio, who claimed self-defense was officially ruled a homicide in an autopsy report.

According to a police complaint in October, a witness to the shooting saw Krieg Butler, 36, shoot and kill 13-year-old Sinzae Reed outside of an apartment complex on Oct. 12. The witness said Butler exited his truck, fired shots at Sinzae and drove off, the complaint said.

Butler was arrested days after the shooting and charged with murder, but those charges were dropped pending completion of the investigation after prosecutors said Butler claimed self-defense in the shooting during his arraignment in October, according to a statement from the Columbus Police Department.

The Franklin County autopsy report released Tuesday said the teen was shot twice, once in the hand and once in the chest, concluding the manner of death was a homicide.

The county prosecutor's office told ABC News on Wednesday, "The matter is under internal review and as such no statements will be made at this time."

The Columbus Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday on the autopsy results.

"In Ohio, the self-defense law changed and the legal part of that is the burden changed," Channa Lloyd, criminal attorney and managing partner of The Cochran Firm, has said. "Previously, if a shooter said 'I shot someone in self-defense,' they had to prove it was self-defense. Now that the law has changed, it changes that burden and shifts it to the prosecution."

According to Lloyd, the self-defense rule is a byproduct of the Stand Your Ground laws and is controversial because it protects the shooter as opposed to the victim.

We need to stop expecting & thinking of Black women as S T R O N G.

The strong Black women trope is rooted in racism. It asks me as a Black woman to do the heavy lifting & emotional labour, while white folks remain oblivious and say things like “I truly just didn’t know.”

White women often ask how can I be a better ally? The truth is that our experiences as women are rooted in radically different realities and this is problematic & must be N A M E D.

The question is not how can I be a better ally but rather why am I not actively dismantling a system that ultimately oppresses ALL of us?

When white folks hold up ‘white supremacist cis-hetero patriarchal ableist systems’- what they are saying is, “This system feels respectable, comfortable. It feels safe and good.”

But if your idea of safety & goodness is at the expense of the well-being & safety of Black, Indigenous, Asian & racialized people - Is it really good? Are you truly free?

You see, as we begin to dismantle colonial structures, when E Q U I T Y is held as the standard, when folks, organizations & companies are held accountable for inequities & when normalizing whiteness is no longer accepted- Who will you be?

Toni Morrison said it like this,

“If I take your race away, and there you are, all strung out. And all you got is your little self, and what is that? What are you without racism? Are you any good? Are you still strong? Are you still smart? Do you still like yourself?”

If you’re identity requires your knee on my neck, who are you?

Who are you if you have to be motivated by Black, Indigenous and Asian death?

And please do not call Black women strong as this trope affords white women the position of fragile.

And do not teach my son to be
R E S I L I E N T in some curriculum build through a white lens. He is resilient because he HAS to be. And you should not wish that type of “growth” on anyone.

I am teaching my son his birthright-which includes softness, intimacy, introspection, taking up space unapologetically, speaking truth to power, decolonizing & loving himself & his community.

So if you ask ‘Why decolonize?’

It is a call to your humanity.
