Fall schedules are in FULL SWING in our house and it feels like I have exactly ZERO time. Sound familiar?

This can be especially frustrating if you were just getting into a groove with your healthy habits and now it feels like you have to put them to the side due to these new time restraints put on you. How are you ever supposed to gain traction in your health if you're always starting and stopping these habits you know are good for you?

In episode 153 of the Finding Wellness podcast I give a quick life update about what's going on with us this fall and I share my BEST tip for staying consistent when life feels busy AF.

Let it be boring!

I know, we all want to see big changes or big results overnight. We want that instant gratification, that hit of dopamine, that instant feedback that tells us we're doing something right.

The problem is, when we're relying on these external results to keep us motivated to move forward, we never give ourselves the chance to cultivate discipline. That muscle that we can learn to flex when the motivation just isn't there.

On this week's episode of the podcast, I talk about letting it be boring. Starting small. WAY smaller than you probably think. Get really f*cking good at that ONE really small, really boring thing and THEN improve from there.

It's not sexy. You won't see anyone bragging about this on social media. But I'm telling you, it works! This is where you build consistency. This is where you build habits that are second nature, that you don't even need to think about. Get really good at doing the really small, boring things and watch your ENTIRE LIFE be totally different this time next year.

I used to have an all or nothing approach when it came to diet and exercise. I was either "on plan" or not. There was no in between. I was constantly having to make choices like in the moment to stay "on plan" or not.

It was exhausting.

I felt like I was puttin in SO MUCH work and effort - because I was. I was constantly fighting will power and I was fighting a losing battle every day.

"I can't eat this", "I can't have that".

Ewww. How LOW VIBE!

I've finally come to a place where I'm ADDING in. Asking questions like "where can I ADD protien and veggies today" FEELS so much better than "can I have a piece of birthday cake?"

Now the choices I make don't feel so hard. In fact, it often feels easy. Yes, I'll indulge and have a drink or dessert here and there when I feel like it. But I never feel like I "can't" and that has given me all the power back. I'm not wasting my energy on fighting my will power. I'm spending the time and energy UP FRONT to plan and prepare and make the decision for my future self and it's never been easier to stay "on track".

It hasn't been easy to get here and I used to roll my eyes HARD at people who said s**t like this. So if it sounds impossible or unrealistic to you, I get it!

Tune in to episode 151 of the Finding Wellness podcast to hear more about this and other lessons learned from the recent "summer challenges" I participated in at my gym and with my coach.

Have you ever felt like you were at war with your body? Like you were doing everything “right” but your body just wasn’t responding the way you wanted it to?

I’ve spent years on diets doing everything in my power to be smaller. After years of work I finally had a good relationship with the scale and had body acceptance.

I started eating “better” in support of my mental health and moving my body in ways that felt good to me. I finally felt at peace with my relationship with my weight, food and the scale.

But then…

I started to notice that my body was GAINING fat and LOSING muscle month after month.

WTF?

I started to make adjustments to my diet and became more purposeful and intentional about my movement.

And still, I lost more muscle and gained more fat.

All while my weight stayed about the same.

This went on for months and was incredibly frustrating for me. I had done so much work around getting out of the diet culture mentality but I could feel myself wanting to implement more food rules and was fighting the urge to run for miles to get a “good calorie burn”

I finally had my hormones tested…and wouldn’t you know, they were not in optimal range!

Listen to episode 148 of the Finding Wellness podcast for more about what I learned and what I’m doing about it.

Remember, it’s good to collect data (like from the scale for example) but make sure you’re getting the full picture of what’s happening with your health before you do more damage by taking extreme measures.

THIS! This is 3 generations waking up and going to the gym TOGETHER on a Saturday morning.

THIS is what it’s about for me.

Going to the gym. Getting stronger physically and mentally. Building muscle.

Maybe I’ll lose some weight. Maybe my pants won’t be as snug.

Those things are great but it’s not WHY I choose to go to the gym.

I choose to go to the gym to push myself to new limits and to be a little bit stronger, a little bit faster every day.

I want to be an example for my kids. I want them to see me putting in the work, being disciplined, and improving as a result. I want to walk the walk.

More important than that, I want to be able to stay as young as I can for as long as I can so we can continue doing really cool s**t as a family.

I got away from taking my physical fitness seriously over the last few years while I’ve been focusing on my mental health, self-care, relationships, etc. but I’m so ready to finally be making a come back!

If you’re struggling with your physical fitness right now I encourage you to find your why.

Hating your body and wanting to shrink it to a smaller size isn’t going to get you there.

You can have weight loss or body recomposition goals. But WHY? Play the long game. Don’t give up if you don’t have your desired results in 2 weeks, 6 weeks or even 12 weeks.

This is my why. What’s yours?

This interview with Konika Ray Wong with is an episode all women need to hear! ESPECIALLY women who have influence over young girls (moms, aunts, big sisters, teachers, etc.)

We talk about all things body positivity, de stigmatizing puberty and what you may not know about birth control.

One of my favorite parts of the conversation was around having conversations about what we’re eating without it being about what we look like. Konika’s answer was simple: “It’s never about what your body LOOKS LIKE it’s about what your body CAN DO” she further emphasized this point by talking about how our bodies are changing ALL THE TIME and the way we eat, move, rest, etc has to change in order to accommodate our body’s changing needs 🤯

Konika is a science teacher and mom on a mission to flip puberty positive. The world needs more voices like hers and I’m so honored to have been able to share time with her to have this conversation!

With the time change and the sun being out later a lot of us are itching for those warm summer days. And of course with that the fitness industry is ready to hit all your insecurities. Here come the “6 week summer shred” challenges at every gym in your town.

I’m not here to talk s**t on your local gym. I’m not even here to tell you those challenges are bulls**t. And I’m definitely not here to tell you that your trainer doesn’t have your best interest at heart.

What I AM here to do is to remind you that you are more than a body. And *sometimes* even though these challenges can be fun and there is an undeniable “before and after” physical change, they can do more harm than good IF this isn’t the right time for YOU specifically.

So before you get excited and jump in to the next weight loss or toning program, ask yourself “is weight loss truly what I need right now”?

Your immediate response might be a resounding “yes it is!”. But I encourage you to sit with it a minute and dig deeper. Take a look at your life more holistically.

How is your energy?
How are your relationships?
What are your stress levels like?
What kind of self-talk do you engage in?

You might be surprised to find an area that actually does need more attention. And when you focus on this thing instead of what your body looks like you end up feeling more satisfied with your life in general. And better yet you’ve done yourself a favor and taken yourself one step closer to true HEALTH instead of just being skinny. Let’s not confuse the two!

Here’s your Tuesday afternoon reminder to show up. Show up even when, especially when it won’t be perfect. That is when growth happens.

“Perfect” might be an unrealistic goal. But bringing attention to your areas of opportunity and taking steps to improve can be healthy.

It’s also ok to do something just for fun. To show up as your authentic self with a smile on your face and fully embrace your imperfect self.

Just don’t let the goal of perfection hold you back from showing up in the first place 💖

Feeling frustrated because you're not seeing any progress? You're not alone!

I spent so many years going hard with a diet and exercise routine for a couple weeks only to see no movement on the scale and quit. This all or nothing mentality lead me down a path of my mental and physical health slowly deteriorating over time. I thought I was "fine" but in reality my health was getting worse each time I quit.

So what should you do if you're feeling stuck right now? The short answer, keep going!

The long answer is much more complicated and requires you to do some self reflection. Is it a matter of adjusting our expectations to be more realistic and simply trust the process? OR do we need to take an honest look at our habits and see where we can make some adjustments?

As a health coach it's my job to ask you the right questions to get you to self reflect. I might share some resources or my expertise in a certain area but most of the answers are actually within you!

This week on the podcast I'm sharing a glimpse into what a coaching conversation might look like for a client who is feeling stuck. Click the link in the comments to listen to the Finding Wellness podcast wherever you listen to podcasts and check out episode 144.

We have marketing coming at us from all angles. From big pharma and big food industries to social media influencers to your sister.

Everyone seems to have the "quick fix" to whatever our problem is. Whether we're seeking weight loss, hormone balance, increased energy, increased muscle mass, etc. And in this Amazon Prime culture that we live in, these quick fixes sound perfect. We get excited to take the supplement or do the thing that promises over night results but we rarely stop to ask ourselves if we're practicing good fundamentals in our diet and lifestyle to achieve those same results.

Getting enough sleep, moving our bodies throughout the day, getting sunlight in our eyes withing 30 minutes of waking up, journaling, meditating, eating more vegatable and healthy fats, crowding out ultra processed foods, etc. all sound like WORK. They sound like "that will never work" or "that will take forever to make a difference".

And while these fundamentals of wellness are sometimes work and they do most often take longer than a pill, supplement, or extreme diet change, they DO in fact make a big difference over time and they're most often much more sustainable long term.

So next time you're considering dropping big money on the next quick fix, stop to ask yourself:

What do I really want?
What is standing in my way of that?
What small changes can I make today that will get me closer to what I want?
What will happen if I stop taking XYZ quick fix?

Check out episode 143 of the Finding Wellness podcast for more on this topic as well as navigating all the competing and contradicting advice we find on social media.

Weekends tend to have a checklist a mile long! This weekend, make sure YOU are on your own todo list.

Think about how you can support yourself in small ways and make sure to add them to that ever growing todo list of yours.

This weekend for me is full of travel, celebration, and of course chores. Adding these small acts of self care to my todo list is the ultimate act of self love 💗

What’s on your todo list this weekend?

“Being in shape is awesome, getting in shape sucks”

When I first heard that on a podcast over a month ago I giggled and thought to myself “that’s so f*cking true”

However, as I leaned into my fitness journey over the last month I realized just how much that mindset wasn’t serving me. When we think a thought like “getting in shape sucks” our brain will go to work to show us all the things that confirm that belief.

So if I continue to choose to believe that getting in shape sucks, I will be shown time and time again just how true that is. I realized if I continued to believe this story, I would eventually get frustrated and give up…because who really wants to be miserable? And who is going to go out of their way to prioritize something that sucks?

I decided I needed to reframe this thought and choose a belief that “getting in shape is fun”

While of course every day isn’t exactly fun and there have definitely been bumps in the road, I’m finding my training much more enjoyable since this simple reframe.

Nothing like a lunch time sweat sesh!

Some places will always feel like home. Sometimes you can enter a space and find room to grow there. Sometimes you can take a break and learn and grow in new ways. But they’ll always be room for you in a place that is meant to be your home.

Thanks and for being a place to always call home 🖤

The last couple years have been a JOURNEY! From totally overwhelmed and burned out to really protecting my time, energy and peace.

Sometimes I find that we can be a little too protective of our energy and peace and the pendulum can swing too far into the other direction where self care suddenly turns into self sabotage that holds you back from your goals and your true potential.

I’m not mad about it. It feels like a necessary step on this life long journey. But 2023 is the year we step it up. The year we begin to set goals and push ourselves again. The year we finally learn the difference of that very fine line between self care and self sabotage.

This is something I have been thinking about a LOT and put out a podcast episode about it a few weeks ago that really got me thinking. Today I shared more about my thoughts on this topic and my particular journey on the Finding Wellness podcast (listen wherever you listen to podcasts or click the link in my bio!)

My running journey has been a wild one and it continues in 2023 🏃‍♀️

In 2006 I incorporated running into my workout routine in preparation for my wedding. I couldn’t run the half mile from my house to the light in town before I had to stop to walk.

In 2008-2009 somewhere I did the couch to 5K and fell in love

In 2012 I ran my first half marathon and really got addicted.

In 2015 I ran a full marathon and felt like I was on top of the world.

But between 2016 and 2019 I found myself not running as much, not signing up for many races, and slowly deconditioning as a result.

In 2020 I barely got off the couch (thanks depression) and I’ve been spinning my wheels to get back into running ever since.

Running had been a part of my identity this whole time. At no point did I think “I’m not a runner anymore”…weird since I would run randomly here and there but nothing at all consistent.

In 2023 I am craving that runners high. Im craving the community that running brought me. Im craving the endorphins, the mini goals you set for yourself along the way and the sense of accomplishment as you meet each one.

In 2023 I’m going to humble myself a bit and start as a beginner. It doesn’t make sense to jump right back into half marathons. Im just not there yet. Im going to spend the first half of this year building up my baseline and go from there. I do have my eyes on a September race but I’ll decide at the end of the spring if I’m going to tackle it or not.

Cheers to falling back in love with running again!

It’s been a while since I’ve introduced myself!

Hi! 👋

I’m Megan - wife and mom of 3! My mission is to continue to share my story as a young mom and my experience with anxiety and depression so no other mom feels alone.

I host a podcast called The No BS Mama (listen wherever you listen to podcasts or click the link in my bio) where I not only share my story but the stories of other amazing women as well 💖

Here are 5 things you might not know about me:
1️⃣ 2 of my 3 kids are taller than me
2️⃣ I’m painfully shy around people I don’t know
3️⃣ I prefer an appetizer over desert when dining out
4️⃣ We eat some form of tacos at least once a week in our house
5️⃣ I’m team dry shampoo for life! I try to only wash my hair max 2x per week

What do we have in common??

Post XC smiles!

Running is such a weird sport because even with 300+ runners on the course it’s still you vs you when you get out there. Pushing yourself to be faster while also pacing yourself so you don’t stall out. There are so many lessons to be learned about yourself through training and out on the course.

It’s been a fun XC season for him as he closes out his last middle school season. I hope I get to watch this journey of his continue 🖤

📢 PSA: Having a bad mental health day doesn’t make you a bad person, it makes you a human. Welcome to the club!

I have a feeling a lot of you can relate to this whether or not you have experience with clinical anxiety and depression.

If you DO have experience with clinical anxiety and depression, first of all hugs to you! Walking this path as a mom, trying to hold your pieces together while being all the things for all the people in your house is a different topic for a different day.

But if you are on the other side. You’ve gotten the help. You’ve done the work. You take your meds. You do all the self care things. You think you should be practically sh*tting rainbows 🌈

But the reality is, you’re still going to have hard days. That doesn’t say anything else about you other than the fact that you are a HUMAN!

Remember the days you felt like this constantly (maybe even worse) for weeks or months on end? Wouldn’t you have done anything back then to feel like you do most days now?

Try to remember that. Remember how far you’ve come and celebrate the sh*t out of that. Stop beating yourself up. You’re doing a great job 👏

To the mama who is feeling the feels this weekend: it’s all going to be ok

This weekend marks the official end of summer for a lot of us. We might be feeling mom guilt for any number of things.

Not taking enough vacation time this summer. Not spending enough time at the pool. Not completing the summer bucket list…or never starting one in the first place.

Maybe you’re feeling guilty because you have to work the first day of school so you can’t walk your baby to the bus stop for the first time. Maybe you waited too long to go back to school shopping and your kiddo isn’t happy with what was left in the store.

Maybe you’re dreading the rushed morning routine to get everyone out the door on time without lots of yelling and tears. Maybe you’re already overwhelmed by the fall sports schedule.

Maybe you’re missing your baby who is away at college for the first time (or 2nd, 3rd or 4th time!) Maybe you’re feeling guilty for planning fun family adventures without them.

I could go on for days but you get the point. Your kids love you. You’re doing the best you can and that is ENOUGH. It’s ok to feel the feels and it’s also ok to release the guilt. You’re doing such a great job! I wish you could see yourself the way I see you. 💗

It’s a viscous cycle really.

When we feel like there is not enough time to do all the things for all the people who are depending on us we start to feel like we’re letting people down.

Because we love these people, we start to feel guilty that we aren’t giving them what they need or that they’re not getting the best version of us.

When we start to feel like we’re letting people down we start to feel guilty.

When we start to feel guilty we try to do MORE.

When we try to do more, we end up with EVEN LESS time.

When we have less time we get even less done or drop another ball completely.

The cycle starts over.

Don’t get me wrong. There are plenty of SEASONS in that we really don’t have any time. But if you’re feeling like this is your every day and has been for a while, it’s time to make a change.

I know it feels impossible. I know it feels scary. I know it sounds too good to be true.

But I’m here to remind you that you are worth the time, energy and effort required to change.

YOU can break this cycle.

YOU can create more time in your schedule for the things and people that you love.

YOU have a lot more control than you might think.

I’m here if you need help with this. My DMs are always open 💖

Why do moms cringe when they see inspirational content on the internet that’s cluttered with the “fill your cup first” messaging?

Because a lot of moms cannot even fathom an existence where this is remotely possible. So what do they do instead? They continue to feel unsupported, misunderstood, and overwhelmed…maybe even a little guilty for not being able to figure out a way to do this so that they can show up as the person they aspire to be.

They continue to prioritize everything and everyone above themselves because that’s just what they do.

But what if we switched the narrative and encouraged moms to put themselves on their todo list SOMEWHERE, anywhere!

Literally right between clean the bathroom and pick out birthday gift, something for themselves right there. Maybe they get to it today, maybe they get to it tomorrow.

The idea is to pull them out of a place of overwhelm, anxiety and stress and get them to a place where they can prioritize themselves just a little more every day.

Sounds much more realistic to me. What do you think? 👇

The goal is to become your own best resource. To be self-aware of your behaviors, triggers, emotions and responses. Not so you can ignore them and pretend they’re not happening but so you can move through challenging situations with more EASE.

This is a progressive shift that requires time, effort and energy. But doing the work up front will SAVE you so much time, effort and energy in the long run.

The podcast got a facelift!

I have been working extra hard behind the scenes to bring some exciting things to The No BS Mama community this month.

First and foremost May is Mental Health Awareness month and I have some AMAZING guest interviews coming your way both from other moms who are sharing their story as well as experts providing their professional opinion.

Next, I’m committed to bringing YOU helpful resources to make your life easier. We’re kicking it off with a FREE resources. The No BS Mama quick guide to self care for the everyday mom. Inside you’ll find helpful suggestions that will help you reduce the frequency and intensity of your “mommy meltdown moments”. For fun I’ve created a quiz to help you determine how close you are to your next mommy meltdown. You’ll be emailed the free resource for self care suggestions once you receive your results. (DM me for the link)

And finally, as I step into this new chapter and this next version of myself and my business, I thought it was the perfect time to spruce up my branding. The look may be different but I still have the same mission of normalizing all things and spreading the message that mental health matters so no mom ever feels alone in her struggles 💗
