The Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association (Zimta) yesterday hit back at its counterparts who last week accused it of selling out when it held secret meetings with President Emmerson Mnangagwa where they allegedly agreed on a minimum wage of US$320, down from US$520. In a statement yesterday, Zimta dismissed the allegations levelled against it by its sister unions such as the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) and the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (Artuz), who described it as a union that failed to represent the teachers’ grievances during negotiations. Zesa tariffs rose another 50 per cent yesterday, the third rise in less than six weeks, with households now needing $668,86 to buy the cross-subsidised basic 200 units. According to Zesa advertisements flighted on the 1st of November, the first 50 units a month are now $1,67 each. The next 150 units are $3,65 each. Harare residents have blasted the Harare City Council for announcing four-fold to 10-fold increases in its tariffs for water, sanitation and hygiene (the WASH group), which are set to take effect on Sunday without any consultation. Harare City Council on Monday announced a four-fold increase in water and sewer charges and an almost 10-fold rise in refuse collection charges with effect from November 1, meaning that an average high-density family will have to pay $450 a month for water, $189 for a single toilet and $270 for one bin a week, bringing the total to $909 a month. A City of Cape Town traffic officer is being investigated for allegedly demanding a bribe from a Zimbabwean, threatening to have him detained for having “fraudulent” documents. Percy Moyo, 32, said his personal documents were confiscated and kept at the Brackenfell traffic department on Monday, and he was detained. Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said: “This office can confirm that a 32-year-old male from Happy Valley, Blackheath, was detained on Monday morning on a charge of fraud.” [ 291 more words ]

Two senior members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have been arrested in the ongoing investigations into the gold smuggling case of former ZIFA chief executive member Henrietta Rushwaya, brining to six the number of suspects arrested so far, police said Thursday. Rushwaya was arrested at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport Monday morning as she attempted to board an Air Emirates plane with 6kg of gold in her personal luggage, and she immediately implicated car dealer Ali Muhammad as the owner of the stash. JUSTICE, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi yesterday told Parliament that Chief Justice Luke Malaba cannot interfere with the work of judges and magistrates.
