In coastal lagoons along the Chukchi Sea provide shallow-water nurseries where molt and give birth to their young.

The warmer waters of shallow tidal flats and estuaries are a perfect first habitat for newborn calves before they brave the colder migration routes along the North Slope of the Arctic Ocean.

Belugas are attentive mothers, giving birth every 2-3 years. And they are a long-lived species. NOAA has documented a female beluga as old as 70 years carrying a near-term fetus!

What's in a name?!

The name might suggest these large bovids (cloven-hoofed animals like sheep, cattle, and bison) are naturally smelly, but the name actually only applies for a small portion of the year!

Female muskoxen don't secrete any musky odor, but during mating season, males emit a strong smell to get a potential mate's attention. As a male's dominance grows, so does how pungent his seasonal musk will be!
