Does the idea of taking a career break for family reasons feel like the end of the goals you've set for yourself? Setting goals for your time out of the workforce can transform your break from an obstacle to overcome into an opportunity to rebuild. Before you decide on a career break, think through the ways you can rebalance your life and invest in the personal, professional & family priorities you care about during your time out. This week's episode on the Money, Career & Motherhood podcast discusses how to set impactful career break goals.

If you’re a mom on a family-focused career break, it may not feel like the time to set goals for yourself. It can even feel like the end of the big goals you’d previously set. But time out of the workforce is also an opportunity to build a more meaningful life that works for who you are today, t...

A family-driven career break can be the start of your next big thing. That was certainly the case for my guest on this week’s Money, Career & Motherhood podcast. Listen to my conversation with Karen Wepfer as we discuss her exit from corporate after her second child was born, what she felt she was lacking at work when she decided to leave, and how she's used her time out of the workforce to launch a new product business dedicated to helping working moms.

"I can't imagine leaving my job because I've worked my whole life."

Make no mistake, the decision to take a career break for family reasons is a big one and will have a lasting effect on the trajectory of your life. It DOES NOT have to be a negative one though - But it will require planning, perseverance, and a willingness to look at your life through a new lens.

Can’t decide if you should take a career break to stay home with your kids? You’re not alone. So many moms spend months, or even years, trying to decide if it’s the right thing to do. Maybe you’ve written a pros and cons list, talked endlessly to your spouse, and looked at your family budget, but it still doesn’t feel like you’re any closer to a decision. This week's episode covers the 7 questions to ask yourself before deciding to take a career break for family reasons.

Two themes keep running through my conversations this week...

First, I've heard the comment, "But I've worked my whole life..." from multiple moms who are considering a career break but can't imagine what life will be like without work.

Second, I've been talking about chameleons. My son has to read a passage from a story out loud each week. This week the story is about all the different colors of animals. Pigs are pink. Elephants are grey. But chameleons are not just one color. They can change based on their environment.

;In the story, the chameleon wants to have a color too. But chameleons are meant to adapt.

Sometimes, we can't imagine what our career break life will be like. It's not who we think we are. We want a color too, THE color we've known. But in reality, we are chameleons.

This week on podcast I talk with@dr_amymoore and Sandra Zamalis about how to get past the fears we face in a career break and into the actionable steps that can get into our next paid endeavor, whatever that may be.

Who are we kidding? We've been talking about the breakdown of childcare systems during the pandemic like it's a new thing. The newness is the magnitude - that it happened to all working parents at the same time. But working parents have been dealing with the individual breakdowns in childcare since women have been working outside the home, every time a child was sick, a provider was unavailable, or something else unexpected occurred. This has resulted in many women stepping back or stepping out in their career, burnout and more, resulting in billions of lost productivity. We don't need solutions to get back to the way things were, we need solutions to get back better.

Check out this week's episode with Priya Amin of where we discuss filling in the gaps of traditional childcare for working parents.

Many women who take career breaks feel like they've lost their identity, like they no longer are the person they once were, now, without the paycheck, without the accolades at the office. It doesn't have to be this way. You are still the person you were, but more. You evolve. Create a strategy to become the person you want to be as you process the identity shift of a career break.

09/06/2021

As a highly accomplished, professional woman, taking a career break can be one of the most challenging things you do. A total identity shift. But it can be so worth it. Not only can it give you the family-focused time you desire, it can also offer you time to reflect on who you are and what you want to contribute to the world. A career break doesn't have to be a career end. In this week's episode I talk with Priya Amin about the important work she's done and the company she's founded since her career break.

When I first met today’s guest, she said something that hit me hard. “There will always be a breakdown in childcare.” It’s true. This is why solutions for parents who take career breaks are so important to me. Even with flexible employers, things come up when you have kids. Sometimes the challenges are so great that parents, usually mothers, take career breaks to solve these problems.

Priya Amin is the co-founder of an innovative virtual childcare company called Flexible Care. She left a thriving career for a family-driven career break and has since dedicated her career to being part of the solution for working parents by founding Flexible Care. In this episode, Priya and I discuss the challenges working parents’ face, the evolution of Flexible Care as she and her co-founder try to navigate the needs of parents, as well as the challenges she faced in funding the business’ growth. We talk openly about remaining solution-focused in her startup when the original plan didn’t work and her advice for female founders who are trying to seek investors for their business. The Flexible Care team successfully raised nearly $1 million in funding, yet it was ironically childcare that presented one of its biggest barriers to funding.

According to my guest Michelle Arpin Begina, there’s a very big difference between income and wealth. I couldn’t agree more. Too often families are caught up in a spending pattern to create an illusion of wealth, when in fact they’re struggling financially. In this week’s episode, I talk with Michelle about the complex relationship she developed with money as a child through her family experiences, what change you really need to focus on to improve your financial situation, and how to use your life’s successes unrelated to money to meet your financial goals.
