Happy Make it Monday!

Today we will be practicing our cutting and gluing skills with these adorable (and SIMPLE) finger puppets to go along with Little Red Riding Hood!!!

Hearing these stories over and over as a younger reader is so important for the developing brain! Memorizing stories and becoming familiar with the elements of a fairytale helps our children grow into strong readers and writers!

Happy Make it Monday!

One of our favorite books is Dragon Post! It is SO fun with urgent letters and silly mishaps that come with having a pet dragon!!

To go along with this must-have, we are going to be making dragon feet!

You Will Need:
2 same-colored sheets of craft foam
1 sheet of white craft foam
Scissors
A pencil
A glue gun & glue
A cup or something round to trace

How to Make Your Dragon Feet:
Using your pencil, draw a dragon foot shape on your colored foam.
Cut out your foot and trace around it on your other sheet of colored foam.
Trace around the bottom of the cup where the dragon's foot would meet its leg and cut the circle out.
Cut out 6 triangles out of the white foam (these will be the claws).
Using a glue gun, glue the claws to the foot.
Put the feet on around the ankles and have fun. (You might need to tape the foam foot to the child's actual feet so that they don't spin around.)
Now you can get into all kinds of fun shenanigans with your pet dragon! Maybe even have your dragon send some dragon post to someone who could use some happy mail!

Happy Make it Monday!

Today we will be making a crab craft inspired from the book This is Crab!!!

You will need:
Paper plates
Kid friendly paint
Sponges
scissors
glue sticks
assorted jewels
pipe cleaners
googly eyes
paper fasteners

This is a FUN project, because who doesn't love painting and sparkly gemstones!?! You can start in the morning, do a little more after the paint is dry, and then add finishing touches. There's only a little craft prep - cutting up a paper plate. One plate will be kept whole for the crab's body. Cut the second plate in half, then trim a long straight strip from each half to make 2 arms for the crab. Trim off the crinkle edges, then cut the semi circle in half, and these will become the crab's claws! Then paint with the sponges!!!

After the paint is dry, create and attach the crab's arms. Use a glue stick to glue the pointed ends of the claws together into a claw shape, then glue the claw onto his arm. Repeat for the other arm, then fasten them both to the body with a paper fastener. This will allow the crab to wave hello, just like he does in our book!

When you read the book, you'll see that the crab meets a decorator crab. This gives you an opportunity to learn how that type of crab decorates themselves for protection and camouflage. After your crab arms are attached, you can use some gemstones to decorate your crab using glue sticks to attach them.

The last step is the crab's eyes! For his eyes, you can take a pipe cleaner and roll one end into a circular shape to create the eye socket, and tape the straight end to the top back of our crab. The finishing touch is a googly eye on the eye socket to bring your crab craft to life!

Happy Make it Monday!!!

Today we will be making a construction site sensory bin with DIY Cloud Sand!!!

You will need:
Some kind of plastic bin (you might get these at Costco)
8 cups of flour
1 cup baby oil
Construction trucks
rocks from your yard
shovels, sifters, etc (try getting these at the dollar store)

Making cloud sand is super easy! 8 cups of flour plus 1 cup (or a little more to make it more moldable) of oil then mix. Voila! Dump it into a medium size plastic bin big enough to contain your construction supplies.

Put in some fun construction vehicles to drive, bulldoze, scoop and more. The kids can collect some rocks from your yard, and toss them in.

Now you have a super fun construction site to dig into!!! Read Shine-a-light at the construction site and Drives a Digger (super cute star in your own story book)!!!

Today, we will be working on our numbers!!! Over the summer, handwriting is something that is easily forgotten about for those lower elementary students who worked so hard to improve!
So, today we are going to make a mess with our First Numbers book!!!
You will need:
A wipeable mat, tray, or cookie sheet
Shaving cream
A numbers book or number cards!
A bowl with water or wipes for cleaning your hands

Let your cuties get their fingers messy and practice those numbers, shapes, patterns, or whatever they want to work on!!!

Happy Make it Monday!!!
Today we will be doing a little painting with broccoli!!! We have new Veggie Squad books (https://j11684.myubam.com/p/9080/veggie-squad) which are so fun and silly! We LOVE broccoli in our house!

You will need:
Paint
Paper
Raw broccoli (I bought a crown of broccoli and cut a few different sized florets for our craft)

Lay down your paper and let your artist dip the broccoli in the different colors of paint!
It's so fun mixing the colors and watching what happened as they mixed on the paper!
Let your broccoli art dry and you have a super fun activity that also allows for a positive experience with veggies! You never know! Your little one may give broccoli another try the next time you serve it!

***You can also dip the broccoli florets in yogurt or hummus and use a tortilla as your canvas for those little ones who eat/taste EVERYTHING they touch! 🙂
