Interesting facts about the Helios 44-2
The Helios 44-2 is the most famous vintage lens for digital photographers because of its swirly bokeh but also because it’s a very budget-friendly lens but it had many variations.
The Helios 44-2 started out as a copy of the very famous Carl Zeiss Biotar optical formula.
The first Helios 44 came in silver and later the 44-2 came in black
There are 3 versions of the lenses that were made between the 1950s to the 1990s.
The first versions were produced in the KMZ Plant.
The Valdai version was considered the worst of the 3 versions due to built quality and the oil present on the blades.
I have the MMZ version with the M42 mount - considered to not be the best but better than the Valdai version. See the 3 logos representing each manufacturing plant.

Concluded the past two weeks with this 61 MP Full Frame compact size camera by .
What a fun camera to use. I fully went in when taking photos with the A7CR. I didn’t really focus too much on video this time around but the video features are next level, especially the auto focus in video with subject tracking for human, animal, bird, train and car. The 4K 60 fps, loading custom LUT, etc.
It was a bucket list moment with taking photos of the Moon. I paired the 61 MP camera with the 200-600 f/5.3-f/6.5 Telephoto lens. See the next slide.
Question though, where does this camera fit? Is there a place for it when there’s the A7R5?

It's been 4 years since the Covid 19 lockdown in South Africa.
"Tomorrow's Promise" is a short film I created documenting the cause and effects of Covid-19 and the travel restrictions imposed.
As a result, due to travel restrictions into South Africa, prevented my Mother-in-law from attending her mother's funeral.
The loss was devastating for our family amplified by the horrific number of people dying daily but most significantly, robbed friends and family from properly saying their last goodbyes.

Some great news! Elements of Movement has been selected to be part of this year's Mobile Filmmaker International Fest.
The amount of vignetting, barrel distortion, and lens breathing present in some of the most iconic and legendary classic films, makes me wonder why mobile filmmakers are so obsessed with clean edge-to-edge clarity when selecting conversion lenses.
The Batman was basically shot using broken Helios 44-2 vintage lenses and the Sh**un series on Disney has some pretty messed up blurry edges with no distortion correction applied but the damn film/series are aesthetically pleasing.
Conversion lenses offer character to mobile filmmaking. Mobile phone footage is way too sharp and clean. Adding some outdated conversion lenses adds texture to the image.
It's why film photography is so fashionable these days. Flip phones, Nintendo DS, Nikon Coolpix, and iPods are in high demand.
It's the same reason why people are returning their Vision Pro's as fast as they buy them. It's not real.
I know this rant has nothing to do with the price of eggs but I just had to get that off my chest. I might laugh at this a year from now when this pops up on my memories (if I am still on Facebook a year from now).

The best thing about road trips in South Africa is driving through all the little dorpies, stopping for some original South African biltong, interacting with the people and seeing our beautiful country! Whats makes it memorable is the moments you create with friends and family jamming to that perfectly curated playlist. Something that adds on top of the already beautiful scenery. We wanted to capture that moment by shooting a music in a Suzuki Jimny. From Capturing those moments of exploration in around the different dorpies, to the Mother City with the mountain as our backdrop, to the hustle and bustle of the metropolitan areas showcasing the vastness of our beautiful country. Again, snagged this quick video to test out the Apple Log picture profile on the iPhone 15 Pro. I wasn’t allowed to do this but I risked it anyway 😂. Graded with @dehancer.film which makes it super easy to get that film look on Mobile footage. With Apple Log there’s no artificial HDR, over-sharpening. So you get a much cleaner look.
