Some great advice from SBG black belt, and head of SBG Africa, Steve Bazzea:
“Lessons from a 56-year-old jiu-jitsu Silverback (with a prosthetic hip) – I coach on average 25 sessions a week, and other than my own personal conditioning and drilling, I put in at least 4 rolling sessions a week. I have been asked how I manage to continue to be so active when many people my age and younger struggle. So, in no particular order:
1. Hydrate. Drink your quota of water per day (it actually is important!)
2. Deadlift. Learn to execute the mechanics of this conditioning exercise. It adds strength to your hips and provides stability to your jiu-jitsu.
3. Seven. Train and strengthen the seven basic movement patterns: Pull, Push, Squat, Lunge, Hinge, Rotation and Carry.
4. Strike. Grappling is mainly flexion bound; Stand up striking (sparring) will place you in extension patterns. Balance the system.
5. Move. Explore the articulation of movement patterns, focusing on mobility in my conditioning routine has vastly increased my ability.
6. Warm up. Find a routine that best suits you to rehearse intended movements and prepare the Central Nervous System. I find attaching bands on different levels and applying various movement patterns beneficial.
7. Base, Posture & Connection. It will add years and efficiency to your jiu-jitsu.
8. Frames. Slow down the roll by incorporating frames and leverage – instead of explosive scrambles.
9. Training partner. Choose wisely and leave enough in the gas tank for tomorrow.
10. Breath. Listen to your breathe, it will dictate how you roll.
11. Sleep. Read Mathew Walker’s book on the subject – it will scare you into sleeping.
12. Nutrition. Eat clean, the information is out there.
13. Know what to do. a quote from Anthony Greenbank “To live through an impossible situation, you don’t need the reflexes of a Grand Prix driver, the muscles of a Hercules, or the mind of an Einstein. You simply need to know what to do.” Your technique has to operate on close to 100% efficiency, all the time.
14. Have fun. Otherwise why do it?”
