Starting today, August 2nd, the will be issuing impact-based Severe Thunderstorm Warnings.

There are three new tiers: Base, Considerable & Destructive. 'Destructive' will trigger a Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) which will alert your smart device.

August is not known for being a big tornado month, but areas in the midwest and northern/central plains can still experience increased activity on occasion.

The jet stream has completed its annual migration north and is starting to settle and make the trek back southward for the upcoming fall. August typically features slow moving weather systems and stalled frontal boundaries that deliver flooding rains day after day to any given location. Extreme levels of summertime instability help fuel storms and can compensate for a lack in wind shear. We call these "high cape low shear" setups.

Tornadoes that are spun up during derechoes (qlcs) and tropical systems are other ways we get tornadoes in August. I'll dive into hurricanes in the next post.

As I have seen happen, we have officially been upgraded. Circumstances tomorrow, is very unfavorable weather. Please, pay attention to the weather and have a way to get watches and warnings. Stay safe everyone.

More information coming this morning but today (Wed., July 28th) will be a KEEP TRACK OF THE WEATHER DAY, especially in Wisconsin where dangerous storms could cause significant impacts going into this evening. This is NOT just another severe weather risk day.

If you have outdoor plans later today (Wed., July 28th), especially camping this evening or tonight, make sure you have shelter options. Storms later today could pose a risk for tornadoes, large hail, and widespread damaging wind.

Thunderstorms are expected to develop late Wednesday afternoon in north central Minnesota and move into eastern Minnesota and Wisconsin during the evening and early overnight hours. Damaging wind, large hail, and even a few tornadoes are all possible.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop later this afternoon across southeast Minnesota and western Wisconsin, and move eastward this evening. A few storms could produce damaging wind and large hail to the east of I-35. The better chances are across Wisconsin where there is a Slight Risk (2 out of 5) of severe weather. Please stay weather-aware, especially if you have outdoor plans this evening.

A few severe thunderstorms are possible tomorrow amidst what will mostly be scattered showers and weak storms, with the main threats being up to 1 inch hail and 60mph wind gusts.

Most of the activity will likely be a bit of thunder and lightning alongside heavy rainfall, but not more than that.
