Nine people died, and several others were injured after a tourist bus caught fire in Haryana's Nuh on Friday. Of the deceased persons, six are women and three are men.

The incident happened late in the night, at 1.30 am. Around 60 people were travelling on the bus.

Most of the passengers were on religious pilgrimages.

Visuals showed the bus in flames as it stood on what looked like a flyover or bridge.

An eyewitness, an elderly woman, who was on the bus, told India Today TV that she jumped out of the vehicle and saved herself after learning about it being on fire. She further stated that a bike-borne man noticed the bus on fire and overtook the vehicle to alert the driver of the same.

"I heard a sound from under the bus. I thought the vehicle was plying on an elevated structure on the road; hence made the sound. However, later there was a smell as well. A biker who was behind the bus for several kilometres overtook and came to the front, and told the driver that the bus had caught fire. I was sitting in one of the front seats, so I jumped," she said.

The woman said many passengers were her relatives, and that they belonged to Hoshiarpur in Punjab. She is also from Punjab, but from Ludhiana. She told India Today TV that they had gone for a 7-8 day pilgrimage and were returning home.

Another eyewitness, who runs a roadside shop, told India Today TV that he broke open a few windows of the bus and managed to pull out a 5-10 passengers. However, he failed to help further as the fire raged on fiercely.

"I brought water too, but it didn't help. Police were alerted, and around 4 fire engines arrived nearly three hours later when the fire had calmed down and the bus was completely destroyed," he added.

The cause behind the fire is yet to be ascertained.

The All Sikkim Gurung Tamu Buddhist Association (ASGTBA) has decided to abstain from organising this year's Tamu Lossar.

In a press statement, ASGTBA says that
the still unresolved death of Namchi College SRC president, Padam Gurung and the devastation caused by the Teesta Flood are the two primary reasons which influenced the decision.

"Padam Gurung's death has left a profound impact on the state of Sikkim and in light of the unresolved nature of this tragedy, ASCTBA has decided to respectfully abstain from hosting the State Level Tamu Lossar in 2023."

An additional reason is the substantial losses incurred due to the Teesta floods on October 4, 2023. In solidarity with the affected community the association has decided not to host the event.

Tamu Lochar, the Gurung New Year, falls on 30 December. The Gurung community across Sikkim is encouraged to observe Tamu Lossar through traditional celebrations at home or within their societies.

The press statement also informs that ASGTBA has relieved Dew Kumar Gurung of his position as the President. It has cited his "inadequate contributions to the community and concerns about his misuse of power, leading to a negative perception of the association within society," as the reason.
