In 2014 was overtaken by a military coup d'etat, which ousted the democratically elected socialist government led by Yingluck Shinawatra, who has been forced into exile overseas.
"Slander" against the King and the military is a criminal offence, and can lead to a long time in jail. Since the coup, the military regime has arrested and detained hundreds of activists for democracy, and 59 human rights defenders have been subjected to "forced disappearances," some of whom have been killed. Several more are attacked by the police, and damage done to their property. The regime also forcefully repatriates and incarcerates political exiles to neighbouring countries.
