History Snippet - Current Events in 1918
Grande Prairie in 1918 was a difficult place to live. Listen as Alyssa Currie, former Executive Director of the South Peace Regional Archives, shares why this murder may not have been directly at the top of the list of everyone's day-to-day concerns.
What was Grande Prairie policing like in the early 1900s?
What was policing like in the early 1900s in Alberta, and more specifically, Grande Prairie? Dr. David Leonard comments in this interview with us dated June 13, 2021.
"In 1917, the Alberta Provincial Police was formed specifically to counter the large extent of bootlegging that was taking place in the province. When it was formed, the divisional headquarters was in peace River. A.P. MacDonnell was at the division headquarters and there was a detachment in Grand Prairie at the time. But the policing was always considered to be inadequate for all the criminality that was taking place on the Grande Prairie.
You know, farming out there on your own, you're very exposed to any criminal element, somebody might want to invade your farm, wherever your your farm was, even though they may be in the area because you just don't have that kind of protection. And since the settlement was new to the area, people often didn't have that close relationship with with neighbors in the area. So there was a lot of crime and a lot of crime that was unreported."
