Holly and Gerry Fitzgerald married in 1970 and wanted to have the honeymoon of a lifetime.
They worked all the hours they could to save money for this year long travelling honeymoon.
In late 1972, they started their honeymoon, travelling South America. In the start of January 1973, they set off in a plane from Pucallpa. (Yes, that is the exact same town Juliane Koepckes planes went down just a year prior). Their plane crashes.
They now found themselves in the jungle having to find their own way out.
After some friendly advice from a fellow traveller, they built a raft and started their journey down the Madre de Dios River to freedom. Things got rough for Holly and Gerry.
Listen in this week to hear what happened to Holly and Gerry in part 1 of this 2 parter.

This mentions Juliane and Yossi due to some mind blowing coincidences I found out whilst researching! If you liked those episodes you'll adore this one!

Listen in to find out how P**n survived and what happened after he was rescued.

Steven Stayner was just 7 years old when he was abducted on December 4th, 1972. He spent the next 7 years living with a vile pa******le named Kenneth Parnell. Parnell, kept Steven for these years, moving around California, enrolling Steven into various schools under the name of Dennis Parnell.
Parnell struggled to hold down a stable job, kept on the move and abusing Steven. He made several attempts with Steven to abduct other children, only to have them fail every time. Recruiting another person to abduct a child, Parnell abducted 5 year-old, Timothy White, in 1980.
Steven, being determined to spare Timothy the same fate he had endured, escaped with him in the middle of the night. They went to a police station and explained their stories.
Kenneth Parnell was arrested the next morning.
Steven, once returned to his grateful parents and family, had a hard time readjusting to his new life.
Listen this week to hear about the full, albeit, short life of Steven Stayner; the sentencing of Parnell and all those involved in this new episode of Not Me, Not Today Podcast.

⚠️ Trigger Warning : this episode contains child abduction and child sexual abuse *although kept to a minimum*.

Ada Blackjack was an Inupiat born woman, originally named Ada Delutuk, but was actually raised by Methodist missionaries in Nome, Alaska.
At 16, she married an abusive man named Jack Blackjack and had three children with him. Only one of those children survived past infancy. Her son Bennet, who had tuberculosis. After Jack left Ada and her son destitute, she had to find a way to care for their son, alone.
An opportunity arose for a Native seamstress that spoke English. It paid well and would cover the medical costs she needed to have Bennet treated. It would require her absence for 1-2 years. Leaving Bennet in an orphanage temporarily she joined the voyage.
Ada at 23 was the only woman in a team of 4 male explorers. She was hired to cook, clean and sew for them. The mission was to claim Wrangel Island. Only, when they got there, things didn't go to plan and Ada started a 2 year fight for her survival. She, in fact, became the only survivor.
Listen to this weeks episode, to hear about the incredible journey and life of Ada Blackjack.

In 1848, Phineas Gage was blasting rocks to make way for the new railroad. He was packing a hole with blasting powder and a fuse, when momentarily distracted, scraped his iron tampering rod along a rock producing a spark and igniting the fuse.
The Tampering rod was shot straight through his skull being found 30 feet away covered in his brains.
Much to his co-workers horror, he walked to an oxcart and made his way back to the lodging town he was in. Here, he met Dr Williams and Dr Harlow who helped clean his head and monitor him.

They met rarely contacted tribes, ate monkeys, travelled rivers and tried to enjoy their adventure. But despite the adventure the challenges became too much, their relationships frayed and this led them to splitting off into pairs.

Yossi and Kevin would continue on in the adventure down the river deeper into the jungle and Karl and Markus would turn back to the nearest village about 3 days walk away.

Yossi and Kevin on a raft down the river get separated and start the long, treacherous journey alone in the jungle.

Tsutomu Yamaguchi, is the luckiest unlucky survivor you’ll hear about.

At age 27, in 1945 Mr. Yamaguchi and his colleagues were sent from Nagasaki to Hiroshima for an extended work trip. On the day, before they were due to return the “Little Boy” nuclear bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.

Mr. Yamaguchi was late for work when the bomb was dropped, and woke up to see a crown of fire and mushroom cloud soar into the skies. His skin was red, raw, burning and he had a ringing in his ears like he had never experienced before. After finding his colleagues they made their way to the station to catch an evacuation train back to Nagasaki.

After the gruelling journey back, Mr. Yamaguchi showed up for work Monday morning to explain what had happened. Whilst explaining what had happened to his co-workers, there was a flash and Mr. Yamaguchi was knocked unconscious. When he finally came around, it was more carnage. Once again he woke up to a mushroom cloud and the city on fire.

He kept his experience hidden and unspoken about until the age of 90. He wrote a book of poetry and spent his remaining years talking about his experience.

Listen in to find out the full incredible story of Tsutomu Yamaguchi.
