I will fight the NPP if they try to collapse my businesses - Kennedy Agyapong

A contender for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership race, Kennedy Agyapong has threatened to reveal secrets that will lead to the end of the party if attempts are made to collapse his businesses.

In an interview with Sompa FM in Kumasi, Mr Agyapong said if attempts were made to collapse his businesses, he will "finish the party" with his disclosures.

"I am being nice and charitable to NPP (members), they shouldn't dare me, they shouldn't dare me," Mr Agyapong said in the Sompa FM with Yaw Adu Boakye.

"...I will finish the party, the things I will say. The things I know that I have kept quiet".

According to the Assin Central Member of Parliament, he has been the victim of a witch-hunt by members of his party since the beginning of the year, alleging that the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) was being used as a vehicle to intimidate and frustrate his business operations.

He alleged that the GRA wanted to station its personnel at his cold chain stores to police how much fish he sells daily, warning "Let me say this, I have gone past intimidation. They cannot use the system to intimidate me, I have to say this, I have opened businesses across the last five presidents. I never went through any of this harassment."

"Ghana Revenue Authority can never collapse my business because I will fight. I will fight for the youth because that steel plant alone will take 1000 workers," he said.

"And you are going there because Kwame Agyapong is loudmouthed because he wants to contest [for president] so you will destroy my business".

He also threatened to expose alleged corrupt dealing at the GRA.

"Whether they are auditing, whether they are collapsing the business, I swear to God, Ghana Revenue Authority can never collapse my business because I will fight..."

Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation, elects Bola Tinubu as the new president

Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been declared as the winner of Nigeria's presidential elections, beating out two other prominent candidates. It comes three days after criticism by observers for widespread logistical failings, violence that suppressed the vote, and cries from opposition parties of a sham.

For Tinubu, his victory is the culmination of a deeply held ambition.

Over decades, the former two-term governor of Lagos has evolved into a divisive yet towering figure in Nigerian politics. The wealthy, so-called political godfather is a power broker who helped outgoing president Muhammadu Buhari win the presidency in 2015.

Tinubu's campaign slogan was "emi lo kan" in his native Yoruba — "It's my turn." And now it is.

He won just over 36% of the vote in one of the most tightly contested polls since the end of military rule. He lost in his home state but won by a clear margin in the rest of the country defeating 76-year-old Atiku Abubakar, a six-time presidential contestant, and 61-year-old Peter Obi, a third-party candidate who galvanized huge support from voters disaffected with the traditional political class.

The president-elect saw success in Lagos — and criticism over his continued influence

Tinubu is at once one of the most well-known politicians in the country and also an enigma, dogged by questions about the source of his wealth, his age, and his health.

A former accountant and senator, he's credited by supporters for attracting major investment and turning Lagos into one of the biggest economies in Africa when he was governor of the state from 1999 to 2007.

Since he left office, subsequent governors have relied on his blessing and committed to following his blueprint.

But to his detractors, he is blamed for Lagos' many challenges: decrepit infrastructure, a lack of affordable housing, and inequality. He has long claimed to have made millions while working as an accountant at Deloitte, but the firm says he was never employed.

He has often been accused of maintaining control of the state's finances which he helped to build. He has also fought corruption charges and been accused of involvement in drug-related crimes. In 1992, the U.S. government accused him in a lawsuit of laundering proceeds from he**in trafficking, and he eventually reached a settlement, forfeiting $460,000. He denies any wrongdoing.
The election indicates changes in Nigerian politics

Before the vote, several opinion polls predicted Obi would win the election. He ultimately came third, but Obi's 25% vote share is the highest third-party percentage tally in Nigerian history despite the defeat. Key wins in states like Lagos have made Nigeria's political map appear less set in stone, and more vulnerable to the political mobilization of the kind that Obi has inspired, particularly among the young and middle class.

The opposition had called for the elections to be canceled and for a rerun of the vote, and there will likely be legal challenges.

But now Tinubu has been declared the next president of Nigeria, he faces the tall task of addressing major economic and security crises.

The last eight years have seen two recessions, high youth unemployment, inflation, and a collapse in the value of the naira. Kidnaps for ransom attacks have spread, and armed groups are active across the country's north, central, and southeast.

The inauguration is scheduled to be held in May.

Be hopeful, 2023 holds a lot of promise - Alan K

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen has inspired Ghanaians to be hopeful of the future as 2023 held a lot of promise.

He said despite the difficulties the country faced in 2022, measures put in place with assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) would help turn things around for the better.

Speaking at the New Year's Eve service at the Calvary Charismatic Church (CCC) in Kumasi, he urged Ghanaians to trust in the prudent management of the economy as against serious odds, Ghanaians have coped better with the global economic crises than other countries.

"Find out from even the most advanced countries like UK, United States of America, Germany or France, from North to South, East and West, go and find out some were queuing for bread, petrol and cooking oil. These are even rich nations, but for God’s grace we never queued for petrol or any of these commodities," he intimated

"This was not because of our might or knowledge or the government’s power. It was by the grace of God", the Minister said and asked Ghanaians to be thankful to God for his mercies on the nation.

Mr Kyerematen chronicled the woes of other countries across the globe as against the current state of Ghana.

He thanked the Almighty God for His Mercies on Ghanaians at a time globally respected economies were on their knees.

Mr Kyerematen ended 2022 with prayer visits to Faith Gospel Church, Family Chapel International, St Cyprian Anglican Cathedral, CCC to usher in 2023.

Mahama to retain Jane Naana as running mate – Ablakwa issues 20 political forecasts for 2023

Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has outlined twenty (20) events he envisions will occur within Ghana’s geopolitical space in the year 2023.

According to the opposition National Democratic Congress MP, the party’s 2020 presidential candidate, former President John Dramani Mahama, who is regarded by many as the party’s candidate for the 2024 elections, will settle on Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate.

“Former President John Mahama will emerge victorious from the 2023 NDC Flagbearer Primaries with more than 95% of valid votes cast.

“Former President John Mahama expected to retain Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his Running Mate for the 2024 presidential election,” he wrote in a Facebook post on Sunday, January 1, 2023.

Among other things, Mr Ablakwa predicted a substantial delay in the agreement by the Board of the International Monetary Fund to Ghana’s $3 billion loan request which received a Staff Level Agreement in the late part of 2022.

He further made predictions about the calls for the removal of the Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta and how it will lead to a turmoil in the ruling New Patriotic Party.

According to him, the fallout of the turmoil will be a victimization of some NPP MPs who are actively involved in the push for the minister’s removal.

32 major hospital projects ongoing in Ashanti - President Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo DankwaAkufo-Addo, says his government, since 2017, has embarked on the construction and completion of some thirty-two (32) hospital projects in the Ashanti Region.

Speaking at the commissioning of the 60-bed Asante Akim Municipal Hospital on Sunday, October 16, 2022, as part of his 4-day working visit of the Ashanti Region, President Akufo-Addo stressed that “I am not referring to CHPS compounds and health centres, I am talking specifically about hospital projects”.

Under Agenda 111, the President noted that his government is constructing sixteen (16) district hospitals in Trede, Kokoben, Boamang, Nsuta Sekyere, Manso Adubia, Mankranso, Kwabenakwa, Barekese, Kodie, Asiwa, Akrofuom, Adugyama, Adansi Asokwa, Asokore Mampong, Bantama and Nyinahin, in addition to the construction of a psychiatric hospital in Onwe, in the Ejisu Municipality.

“There are five (5) hospitals being constructed by VAMED Engineering in Manso Nkwanta, Twedie, Sabronum, Drobonso and Suame. Under the EUROGET Project, initiated by the NPP under President Kufuor, the Akufo-Addo Government has seen to the completion of the Ahafo Ano North District Hospital in Tepa, and the Asante Akyem Hospital in Konongo. As I indicated earlier, the two hundred and fifty bed Ashanti Regional Hospital in Sewua, and the five hundred bed Military Hospital at Afari will be commissioned and completed next year,” he said.

The President continued, “Again, under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the construction of the KomfoAnokye Teaching Hospital Maternity and Children’s Block, which had stalled for forty-one (41) years, have been duly reactivated, and work is progressing steadily. We are also completing two district hospital projects in Fomena and Kumawu, which were inherited from the predecessor Government.”

He told the gathering that, very soon, work will commence on the construction of district hospitals at Offinso and Effiduase, as will work on the completion of Maternity Blocks at Tafo and Kumasi South Hospitals, and the construction of a residential facility at Abrepo for Kumasi South Hospital.

“As part of my tour of Ashanti, I will, on Wednesday, inspect ongoing work on the construction of a Trauma Hospital at Obuasi, which is being undertaken by Universal Hospital Group,” he stated.

Commissioning the Asante Akim Hospital in Konongo, which is part of the “Ghana Hospital Project”, initiated by the Kufuor Government in 2008, and executed by EUROGET De-Invest S.A of Egypt, President Akufo-Addo indicated that this is the sixth Hospital he is commissioning under the Project.

“This Hospital has been long awaited in Konongo, and it is good that, today, the demand for a Municipal Hospital of quality has been realised. Residents and surrounding health facilities will now gain access to improved healthcare,” he said.

The “Ghana Hospital Project” involves the design, construction and equipping of one (1) Military Hospital, two (2) Regional Hospitals, and six (6) District Hospitals in Ghana, at a project cost of US$339 million. It falls under the broader objective of providing infrastructure for the delivery of effective healthcare to Ghanaians.

Other hospitals being constructed under this contract are the two hundred and fifty (250) bed Ashanti Regional Hospital at Sewua in the Bosomtwe District; the sixty (60) bed Municipal Hospital at Salaga in the East Gonja Municipality; and the five hundred (500) bed Military Hospital, under the Ministry of Defence at Afari, again, here in Ashanti. They are all expected to be commissioned before the end of 2023.

The Konongo Hospital has been constructed at a cost of thirty-five million, eight hundred and sixty-thousand United States dollars (US$35.86 million), and has been designed with several departments including administration; outpatient department (OPD); physiotherapy; pharmacy; radiology; laboratory; surgical suite (operation dep.); laundry; mortuary; medical waste department; general stores; ten (10) staff housing units; and a mini market.

The Hospital has been equipped with modern medical equipment, such as x-ray machines, ultrasound machines, fully equipped operating theatre, medical gases, and patient monitors. It also has a medical waste treatment plant, a power station, a water treatment plant, a central air conditioning system and an anaerobic sewerage treatment plant.

President Akufo-Addo reiterated the commitment of Government to improving access to essential and quality health services through the provision of the necessary health infrastructure, equipment and logistics, including the deployment of appropriate technology, as part of Government’s drive to attaining Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has announced that he is now ready to get back into active politics in the party.

Anyidoho was sacked from the party in last year by NDC’s Functional Executive Committee (FEC) over misconduct.
A year on after launching verbal attacks on some party leaders, Anyidoho says he is ready to take what is his in the party.
In a tweet, he said “I am back full swing into active NDC politics and we shall not pay any ransom to those who have hijacked our party: we shall take what legitimately belongs to us.”The party suspended Anyidoho following a petition by two registered NDC members complaining about his conduct which they viewed to be in breach of the NDC constitution.

The petitioners were named in the letter as Mr Mobarak Abdul-Karim, Oti Regional Communication Officer and Mr Eric Adjei, Bono Regional Deputy Communication Officer. The petition was subsequently referred to the Party’s Disciplinary Committee for further action which led to Anyidoho’s expulsion.Announcing the decision, General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah said in a statement that FEC considered the report and recommendations of the National Disciplinary Committee on the case of misconduct and “anti-party behaviour” brought against Mr Anyidoho pursuant to Article 48 (1) (9) (a) of the NDC cosntitution.

In a reaction, Anyidoho interpreted his dismissal from the party to the Biblical Joseph story when his brothers sold him into slavery.
“When Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery; they did not know they were selling him into his God-given destiny to become a Prime Minister in Egypt. What evil men mean for wickedness; God turns it around for good. I am a Son of God,” he tweeted. In what seems like a reaction to the party’s decision to sack him on the basis of “misconduct and anti-party behaviour”, Mr Anyidoho in a series of tweets said he was focused on growing the Atta-Mills Institute, building the Asomdwee Park and flying high the legacy of former President John Evans Atta-Mills.

“My bible tells me that in all things, I should give thanks to God Almighty for His grace and mercies. I love Ghana,” he added.

Don't blame others for your failures - John Jinapor to Prez Akufo-Addo

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Yapei- Kusawgu, John Abdulai Jinapor, says President Akufo-Addo not to sleep on the job and blame others for his failures.

President Akufo-Addo when he met chiefs in the Yapei-Kusawgu area last week when he visited the Savanna Region said their MP, John Jinapor when he was deputy minister of Power was unable to connect some 17 communities to the national electricity grid and was also not able to help establish a Senior High school in the area.

Reacting to President Akufo-Addo's comment, John Jinapor enquired from the President when he will fulfil his campaign promise of creating a new district out of the Central Gonja District and the establishment of a new Senior High school in the Kusawgu area.
Mr Jinapor said, President Akufo-Addo instead of answering the constituents when he was going to fulfil his campaign promise, "rather chose to throw wild and flippant allegations against me, John Abdulai Jinapor, for what he described as my inability to connect some 17 communities to the national electricity grid. As if that was not enough, he proceeded to accuse me of not helping to establish the Senior High school that he, President Akufo-Addo promised."

In a post on Facebook, the Yapei-Kusawgu legislator asked President Akufo-Addo to "crosscheck his facts in future before seeking to deceive the citizenry with concocted, unsubstantiated, and fabricated allegations."

'Image of judiciary deteriorated', We hope new Chief Justice will lead process to repair it - Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama says it will take a new Chief Justice to lead the process to repair what he said was the "badly dented image" of Ghana's judiciary for people to win the trust in the system.

For him, the deteriorated image of the judiciary easily sparks laughter from the citizenry when one decides to go to the court for justice.
Former President Mahama made the statement at the opening of the 2nd Annual Lawyers Conference of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Sunday August 28, 2022.“Recently, so badly has the image of our judiciary deteriorated that many of our citizenry openly make mockery of our justice system and of our justices. The phrase ‘go to court’ is these days met with derisive laughter instead of hope that one will truly get justice if he went to the court.

“If people are not poking fun about politics and inducement being used to sway the hand of justice in the lower courts then it is poking fun and making statements about the 7:0 of the the unanimous FC. Verdicts which mostly involve cases of a political nature in our Supreme court, this is an unfortunate but serious development."
“One of the scariest existential threats to any democracy is when citizens think their judiciary holds no value for them or no use to them, and this is the security threat that the National Security apparatus tried to draw the attention of the nation to recently but was poorly received by the President and his party."

“It is scary because it threatens the peace and stability of our democracy and we must quickly correct this fast spreading notion. If care is not taken, we will get to a stage where people will have no qualms about taking the law into their own hands because they do not have the confidence that they can get any justice in the system"
"There is therefore, the urgent need for the Ghanaian judiciary to work to win the trust and confidence of the citizenry and erase the widely-held perception of hostility and political bias in legal proceedings at the highest court of the land."

“Unfortunately, we have no hope that the current leadership of our judiciary can lead such a process of change, we can only hope that the new Chief Justice will lead the process to repair the broken image that our judiciary has acquired over the last few years,” Mr Mahama observed.

The Teshie People declare The NDC Honorable Benjamin Ayiku man is doing it best than his Predecessor The NPP man Dr Okoe Boye.

Ahead of the grand celebration of Homowo The NDC Honorable Benjamin Ayiku is doing the most for his people in Teshie even much better than his predecessor Mr Okoe Boye , he continued with tradition by making donations of gallons of red oil, cartons of water, cartons of can drinks, bags of maize and cash to the 5 quarters: Agbawe, Lenshie, Gbugblah, Krobo and Klemusum. And also made donations to the traditional councils as well.

Food items are central to the Homowo celebrations, they are the adhesives that bind and bring people together. As my revered story teller, Chinua Achebe is oft quoted, “a man who calls his kinsmen to a feast does not do so to save them from starving. They all have food in their own homes. When we gather together in the moonlit village ground it is not because of the moon. Every man can see it in his own compound. We come together because it is good for kinsmen to do so.”

He says he looks forward to the start of the festival, especially the soccer match between Teshie and Nungua.

Afiii ooo Afii as the Ga’s says it ……..

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!

Ken Ofori-Atta's Databank pocketing millions from gov't bond deals getting richer — KKD

Veteran broadcaster, Kwasi Kyei Darkwah, popularly known as KKD has blamed Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and Parliament for the woes of the Ghanaian economy. He described as foolishness and nonsensical the use of Databank as transactional advisors for the international loans Ghana takes.

Speaking on GTV Breakfast Show on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, he questioned why only Ofori-Atta's company Data Bank is used as a transactions advisor to the government on loans that are entered into.

He called out Parliament for sleeping on their job by allowing Ofori-Atta to engage in such activities with his own company.

According to him, "I read a report yesterday that broke my heart. I saw how much Ghana owes but I also found that apparently, the minister of finance's company or former company, is the transaction advisor to the monies we borrow. So, as Ghana gets poorer, the minister of finance’s company or former company gets richer."

"Is this what we want to continue in this country? Do we want to elect people into office, give them their pay and perks and then allow them and their friends and their companies or their former companies to be the very beneficiaries of the woes of our country?" KKD asked.

He lamented how some industry players have been deprived of their finances while government officials use their companies to milk the country.

He stated that it was important for parliament to stop the plunder by passing laws that proscribe the finance minister from using his private company as a transaction advisor for state loans.

"This is not only about the minister of finance; this is about parliament; parliament, you must be ashamed of yourself. You have failed the people of Ghana because I don't think from the time of Nkrumah to date, whoever is the minister of finance should be benefitting every time our country goes to borrow money," he complained.

"Is that what happened to everybody in this country? What precedent are we setting? Yesterday, when I read the report, I was so broken and I was like: 'Do people know this?' So, I called four different people; some in civil society, some in government, some in the former government, and they said: 'Oh, but this is general knowledge, and I'm like: 'It's general knowledge and parliament thinks it’s OK?'", he noted.

"So, whoever wins the next election will also set up their own companies and be the transaction advisors when we go and take a loan? What is wrong with us as a people? So, the person's motive for even going for a loan, for me, now, is not clear because every time we take a loan, their company makes money. Does this make sense to us as a people?" KKD stated.

He said: "We have leaders of the industry, some, who have been deprived of their finances and, in the meantime, the people who are sitting in power, are stealing us blind and all people can tell me is: 'Oh, but this is general knowledge'. What sort of foolishness and nonsense is going on in this country? What a shame! What a damn shame!"

"When they are out of power, will they want whoever comes into power, to repeat what they are doing? This is not NDC, or NPP. Parliamentarians, you are supposed to help us protect the public purse. You can't just go and sit there and vote: 'I am NPP, I am NDC'. Vote your conscience and vote for your constituency.

"You cannot become the transaction advisor for going to take loans when you are the minister of finance. How is that possible?" he stressed.

Mahama accuses Akufo-Addo of blowing ¢33bn Covid-19 money on 2020 election

Former President John Mahama has accused President Akufo-Addo of misappropriating monies meant for Covid-19 relief.

According to him, the President channelled some ¢33 billion earmarked to offset the pandemic’s grave implications into his 2020 re-election bid.

For this reason, Mr Mahama believes, the said amount supposed to have been sunk into the economic restoration measures is yet to be accounted for.

The former President made these allegations during the 24th African Business Conference organised by the Harvard Business School.

Ghana is currently facing a financial downturn, an unstable currency and worsening debt distress levels which have forced the NPP-led administration to implement bullet-biting measures to the dismay of the public.

During his keynote address, John Mahama acknowledged the efforts of countries that are successfully returning to a good footing through fiscal discipline and judicious application of their resources during the crisis.

But the situation in Ghana is not a good example worth trumpeting, according to the 2020 NDC flagbearer.

“Ghana’s fate was easy to predict with the cavalier handling of the economy by the current administration. We went into the pandemic without adequate buffers, and have emerged with a terribly battered economy,” he said.

“To make matters worse, the pandemic windfall of over GH¢33 billion which could have cushioned the economy remains unaudited and is believed to have been used largely in the quest to win the 2020 elections at all cost,” Mr Mahama told the gathering.

The former President also took threw light on the pandemic’s devastating effects on the African continent citing the Economic Commission of Africa’s (ECA) research which found that “Covid-19 created the continent’s worst recession in 50 years with real GDP shrinking by an average of 3% in 2020.”

“Before the pandemic, poverty reduction was already a major challenge. The pandemic is estimated to have dragged about 55 million more people into poverty in Africa and exposed another 46 million more to the risk of hunger, and malnourishment. Indeed 70% of hunger in Africa, which had already been on the rise since 2014 is directly attributable to this pandemic.”

COVID-19: Fully vaccinated travellers will not be tested on arrival in Ghana ..

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced that from tomorrow, Monday, March 28, 2022, fully vaccinated travellers coming to Ghana will not take PCR tests from their countries of origin to allow them entry into the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) where they will also not be tested for COVID-19 on arrival.

However, the President mentioned that citizens and foreign residents in Ghana, who are not fully vaccinated, would need to provide a negative PCR test result of not more than 48-hours and undergo an antigen test upon arrival at the KIA where they will be offered vaccination.

"It is worth noting that the establishment of the COVID-19 testing infrastructure at the Kotoka International Airport by Frontier Healthcare Services Ltd, at its own cost, has been key to our ability to limit successfully the importation of the virus into Ghana through the airport," the President said in an address to the nation on Sunday evening.

"The efficacy of the testing regime at KIA has won global admiration, and has been applauded by all those who have undergone its testing. It has been one of the reasons why Ghana was not at the receiving end of several of the travel bans imposed by the West at the height of the pandemic, for which many African countries were affected".

Criticism of testing cost

The testing regime at Ghana's airport which costs $150 for a COVID-19 test has been criticised by the minority in Parliament.

Addressing the press recently, the Minority Leader, Mr Haruna Iddrisu expressed concern over what he described as the 'fleecing and rip-off' of Ghanaians and international travellers coming to Ghana in the name of COVID-19 charges at the KIA by Frontiers Health Services.

Those charges, he said, must be reviewed by the government as nowhere in the world did anyone pay $150 for a COVID-19 test.

“I was in Doha, Qatar and Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa returned from Romania and the least you pay for a COVID-19 test is $50 and most probably the highest would be $100, so it is questionable for non-Ghanaians to be compelled to continue to pay $150 in the name of COVID-19 test and raises questions of us using COVID-19 as a money-making enterprise instead of a public pandemic that needs our collective effort to combat and deal with,” he said.

“What is it that we cannot do for our own citizens who want to return to Ghana to contribute to the social and economic of our country?” the Minority leader asked.

Mr Iddrisu said he would lead the Minority to come up with a motion, supported mainly by the MP for North Tongu, Mr Ablakwa, and the MP for Juaboso, Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to demand accountability on charges by Frontiers Health Services at KIA.

“They are trying to even hide the number of international travellers to our borders. What they do not know is that under the country’s laws this is official information that must be given to us so that we can compute how much we have made charging the $150,” he said.
