Here’s a clip from #Spiritfarer, a story about a young girl named Stella who is tasked with ushering dying spirits into the afterlife by helping them accomplish their unfinished business and finding acceptance within their circumstances. Here we say goodbye to Gwen, Stella’s best friend. After years of implied drug and alcohol abuse, Gwen succumbs to lung cancer; but not before reflecting on the choices that led her to this moment, and embracing the end, with her best friend there to hold her hand.

The Distorted Fantasy of the Slave Catcher
Let me preface this by saying, first and foremost, that I am not even remotely an expert on the subject of race, slavery, nor the experience of people in this era. I will always differ to the lived experience and testimony of people of color; I’m merely here to try and pick away at the surface from a literary and narrative perspective. This is the longest clip I’ve posted for the lecture series thus far, and I hope you find it an appropriate and illuminating interpretation of this story mission.
In the southern state of Lemoyne, a former confederate stronghold, Arthur meets a homeless drunkard lamenting the loss of his house and family. He asks Arthur to retrieve some of his personal effects from the house, and Arthur agrees; and it is here we realize the man is a former slave catcher. And Arthur does not mince words when confronting the man about his distorted fantasies about his “history.”

Arthur explains that John left the gang shortly after the birth of his son, and even though he eventually returned, Arthur considered it a betrayal of family. The explanation provides context as to why Arthur holds gang values so close and holds such high, and at times unrealistic expectations for those close to him.
