A year and a half after the unveiling of the Potomac Banks – Explore Fairfax South tourism brand for Southeast Fairfax County, Visit Fairfax has rolled out some new initiatives to promote attractions and hospitality-oriented businesses around the greater Richmond Highway Corridor.

Potomac Banks now has brochures at select visitor centers throughout Virginia and an updated savings pass.

Have any holly? We need nature’s finest to help us decorate River Farm for the holidays! We are looking for pruned conifer (evergreen) branches, such as cedar, pine, fir, spruce, juniper, and arborvitae; colored dogwood stems (red, yellow, and orange); and branches with showy berries such as holly. Take time away from the busy holidays to and become a steward of nature. Join Rangers on Nov. 26 at 2 p.m. as we clean up all the trash that washes onto the shoreline. Meet at the Visitor Center for a quick talk on conservation before we head out.
Please bring water, dress warmly, and expect to get wet and a little dirty. All supplies will be provided by the park.

The Fairfax County Park Authority Board recently approved a matching grant request from the Villamay Community Association to fund the installation of swings at the Gilbert S. McCutcheon Park playground.

Two of the swings will be the traditional “belt-seat” type, while the other two are “Expression Swings,” which enable an adult and young child to swing together facing each other.

The swing set installation project at McCutcheon Park is expected to be completed in spring 2024.

The food you bring us will help stock our pantry for more than 400 registered clients to have choices of foods they want.

We are requesting foods on the list, pictured here, created by our clients. In addition to these items we’ll offer throughout the holidays, we are providing 337 pre-registered households (1,275 household members) with Thanksgiving food boxes being supplied to us by the generous support of three faith communities. Covid vaccines are available to ages 12 and older and Flu Vaccines are available to ages 6 months and older.

The new Ledo Pizza at Liberty Market in Lorton opened its doors Oct. 30, making it the first restaurant to open in the small shop building across from Lidl supermarket.

Ledo Pizza opened in late October, and several other restaurants are expected to open in coming months.

The Commonwealth’s grant for Fairfax County will support an overall $510,000 project to evaluate and design the stabilization of a portion of Pohick Creek near the Noman M. Cole Jr. Pollution Control Plant in Lorton.

The county wants to prevent flooding and erosion from damaging a pollution control plant's ability to treat wastewater from Fort Belvoir.

The Lorton Community Action Center has launched the "All Can Be Healthy" initiative to help low-income Lorton area residents become healthier and more self-sufficient.

The initiative is designed to provide expanded nutritional assistance, more accessible health services and educational programs to around 1,300 community members.

The Lorton Community Action Center received grants to increase access to health and wellness resources and strengthen health literacy among clients.

The Audubon Society of Northern Virgina are pleased to offer a fall bird walk on Nov. 18 at 8:30 a.m. Larry Meade will be leading the walk. Larry is president of the Northern Virginia Bird Club and a member of the ASNV Adult Education Committee. He is a frequent bird walk leader and has been involved in numerous Audubon Christmas Bird Counts and North Atlantic Butterfly Association (NABA) counts. He is the compiler of the Alexandria Circle butterfly count for NABA. Registration is recommended.

We are about halfway through our MVD Food Drive! 🥫🍽 Thank you to everyone who has donated items. This Wednesday we will be dropping off the first set of donations at Bucknell Elementary School in time for Thanksgiving. Please consider donating as the more donations we receive, the more families we can help! The list of requested items can be found on the flyer.

The final day for donations will be at our Holiday Open House on December 7 and items can be dropped off in the secure bin outside my office (2511 Parkers Lane).
