TL; DR: Please go to https://www.websleuths.com/forums/threads/ny-katherine-herold-15-tonawanda-1-july-1985.312370/ and if you are able to help in any way, please do.
This weekend is the 38th anniversary of the murder of Kathy Herold, a 15 year-old girl who attended Kenmore West Senior High School. She was strangled to death with a single ligature by an unknown number of assailants in 1985 on the borderline between Kenmore, NY and the Town of Tonawanda, NY.
Anyone who knows myself or Aaron O’Brian knows that we have been pursuing this Return to Snakeland project (graphic novel, podcast, and webcomic) for several years now, and that the mystery of Kathy Herold’s murder has been the primary engine that it has run upon, fictionalized or factually based depending upon the specific work. I don’t believe that Aaron was ever naïve enough to believe that our work could generate enough interest to help identify Kathy’s murderer or murderers, but I certainly was. One of the things I did separate from the Snakeland work was to tag onto the Websleuths website and post whatever factually-based information we had available. I had recently read a book called We Keep the Dead Close by Becky Cooper that utilized Websleuths to solve a decades-old murder and it seemed like a good idea to do the same with Kathy’s murder. Obviously it did not help substantially or you would have heard about it by now. The web address for Kathy’s post is listed above – please read, post if you can, and if you have any valid information or knowledge of the murderer or murderers and have been holding back now is the time to honor Kathy with the truth.
We tried other avenues over the course of the last several years: met with a Town of Tonawanda Police Detective for several hours, left feeling like I had given away much more than he had given me, including the fact that Kathy was pregnant at the time of her murder. I filed a FOIL request with the Town of Tonawanda which was rejected, I filed a FOIA request with the FBI (who have an existing file on Kathy’s murder) which was rejected, and I filed an appeal with the Kenmore, NY FOIL Appeals Officer which was also rejected. The reason stated for the rejections in all three cases: Public Officer’s Law sect. 87.2(e)(i), “an open investigation with probative leads”. After 38 years. An open investigation with probative leads. 38 years.
We interviewed any number of Kathy’s “best friends” and “boyfriends” and we only found one individual who provided us with any real information and she was so afraid of reprisal by the murderers or individuals who were part of the “inner circle” around them that we had to give her two separate pseudonyms. After 38 years. And still nothing: rumors, additional Persons of Interest added with every new story, bizarre motives, stories of Satanism, revenge, the vested interests of other criminals. Frankly, it got pretty depressing, and with so little progress we slowly moved into more fantastical work (aliens, demons) with the Instagram webcomic. As we are on summer break from the webcomic it seemed like a good time to officially re-introduce the Websleuths posting and hope that someone with more personal experience to offer might finally suggest a redemptive ending to the story of Kathy Herold.
Thanks for reading all the way to the end. Have a good summer.
