Plans Changed 🇦🇷

I booked more than a week to wait in Mendoza till the border reopens with Chile. Because it’s winter it’s nearly impossible to go there. Extreme temperatures in the mountains and meters of snowfall (+ the closed borders).

I checked to continue to Patagonia and cross the border over there but this is not going to change a lot due to the winter.

Buenos Aires 🇦🇷

I had to look for another final destination by bicycle and it’s going to be Buenos Aires. From Mendoza a journey of 1300km. To cycle a new route I will go down to San Rafael (Mendoza) and from there I will cross back into the San Luis province, after that La Pampa and next: Buenos Aires

Chile we’re close but because we can’t go right now we have to come back some day when the climate is better 🇨🇱

Sitting On A Dead Cow 🐄

Santa Ana, a mountain village in Jujuy. An altitude of around 3500 meters. It was already an achievement to do that by bicycle.

To leave Santa Ana to Humahuaca, I had to go by bus or by car. It would be to dangerous to cross this area by bicycle since I would have to cycle to around 5000 meters. The only problem: the rain didn’t stop. On the route to Humahuaca from Santa Ana you have to cross multiple rivers and because of the heavy rainfall, the busses didn’t drive.

The only option was to ask the villagers if they knew someone with a pick-up who was going to travel to Humahuaca. Finally I found a guy who had plans to travel to Humahuaca. He told me we had to wait for the rain to stop because otherwise we would not be able to cross the rivers. After a couple of days it was finally time to leave. I thought he would have space for me to travel inside of the car but he didn’t..

The guy travels from Santa Ana to Humahuaca to sell cow meat. In the back of the car there was a dead cow and that was also the place for me to sit for 5 hours. During the journey it started to rain heavily again. We arrived at the river and for almost an hour we checked with the villagers how we could cross the river.

In short: a terrible cold and uncomfortable journey but at least we left Santa Ana and arrived in Humahuaca..

Oldest Host 🇦🇷

Valle Colorado. When looking for a place to stay an older woman told me her hotel was closed since there were no tourists. She was on her way to her farm in the mountains.

She asked me if I took a tent and my answer was yes. She told me that I could camp where she was constructing a new house.

When I arrived at the construction site, the daughter of the lady arrived. She came from Buenos Aires to visit her mother and grandmother. We decided to drink some mate in the house of her grandmother. The weather changed quickly. Storm and a lot of rain. If I wanted to sleep in the kitchen. Why not.

The old lady is more than 100 years old and wears traditional clothing from a mountain village 20km from Valle Colorado called Caspala.

Therefore, she is the oldest host who received me in her house!

Chimo Attacked 🇦🇷

The plan was to go by bus to San Francisco and maybe cycle back to Ledesma. After checking with a lot of people in San Fransisco I heard that it could be possible to travel by bicycle in the Yungas. The only thing I heard is that the road conditions were really bad and that it's a lot of climbing.

After cycling for maybe 10 hard km I reach a flat part. There were some dogs and Chimo was walking instead of being in his trailer. The big dogo argentinos look mad and start barking because of Chimo who just wants to play. The dogs start to run after him and start to attack him. This looked really bad. I leave my bicycle behind and run towards the dogs biting my Chimo. I hit the dog with my camera. The camera is not made to hit aggressive dogs and my camera breaks from the tripod and falls into the bushes. Camera lost.. The owner of the dogs, the Gaucho on the first photo told me later on he has the dogs because of the tigers and thiefs who visit his farm once in a while.

Argentina has a lot of checkpoints. Maybe because I'm still close to the border with Bolivia. A military officer started following me on social media after meeting him while taking a break.

On Facebook he sent me a message that his wife was looking for me with her car and that I could stay in their house in Tartagal. I went to their house and later I was invited by the parents of the wife to go with them to Oran.

April the 3th 2023. Driving towards Brussels airport with my father. He asked me if I really wanted to go with the bicycle. I already packed the bicycle so I thought there was no way back. That meant I wanted to go.

16 hours from Brussels to Caracas with a stop in Lisbon (Portugal). What a strange feeling to see the coast of Venezuela. The country you've only seen terrible things about. The start of a long journey through Latin America. Probably I didn't really know what I was about to start.

Time flies but I'm happy that I did it. Living all the experiences so far on this incredible journey. All photos are taken in the first days of arriving in Venezuela. The last one shows a fat face which I don't really recognize anymore.
