Mild spoilers for Godzilla X Kong: Frozen Empire or whatever:

I was going to use Lethal Weapon as a puzzle piece for the excellent Piecing It Together Podcast last night, but got distracted by stuff you’ll hear when the episode drops. Anyway, it’s a perfect piece — not only because it was an actual inspiration for the dynamic of Kong and Godzilla, but also it represents a critical flaw with Godzilla ### Kong: The Return of Xander Cage.

In Lethal Weapon, our two heroes are brought together and stay together (more or less) beginning in the first act. After all, it’s a buddy movie — you don’t keep the buddies from each other too long, because that’s the premise of the movie. In GXK, our heroes (no, not the humans — even Dan Stevens being adorable can’t help them) don’t actually team up until around the third act.

Lethal Weapon also has the smarts to include a central villain who’s functional but kinda one note, and provides him with a wonderful henchman in Mr Joshua. In GXK… we get an Elsa kaiju.

As with any film, this isn’t a total lost cause — there’s plenty to take away from it, even if a lot is inherently negative. There’s a sequence early on in Rome that’s absolutely fantastic, However, once we hit the second act, it’s all downhill — until eventually all conflicts lose any gravity they began with.
