Brostners and sistners, we’re BEYOND STOKED to announce that we’ve ranked #27 in Australia, and #41 in the USA on Spotify’s “Top Science Podcasts” chart!
It only feels like yesterday that we were recording our first episode at Forrest’s place during the pandemic, as a way to hang with friends, and just share some WILD times. And we had NO idea how the podcast would evolve. Now, after four years we’ve got hundreds of thousands of fans around the world and an overwhelming amount of positive feedback. Thank you so much to all of you brostners and sistners around the world that have subscribed and kept up with our shenanigans. And a special mention to the OG listeners who have been with us since Day 1 (you guys know who you are)! Without you all, The Wild Times wouldn’t be what it is, and where it is now.

We love you! ❤️

06/06/2024

Artisanal fishers in Chile recently caught two Chilean angel sharks, a species previously only known from a poorly described 1887 study! The original description of the Chilean angel shark lacked accuracy, and was incomplete. Only a few body measurements were supplied, which were hardly enough to differentiate the specimen from other closely related species, and the holotype (originally collected animal) was lost, leaving the scientific record incomplete.
They have been caught in the past, but a complete description of the species was missing, until now.
Two full sharks and one head of a third were captured by the fishers and frozen, then brought to the National Museum of Natural History in Santiago, Chile, where researchers confirmed the species as the Chilean angel shark.
This species grows up to 3ft long, and has "enlarged dorsal thorns" on its head and back.
Due to lack of research and sightings, the species is listed as "critically endangered" by the IUCN, facing threats from coastal development, habitat degradation, and fishing.

Every single year, the Thylacine manages to make headlines without fail. Sometimes it’s amazing companies like Colossal bringing back the Thylacine, and other times its the weird, cryptic, and discreet butt of a marsupial. This one, however, is very weird. This, undoubtedly is the BEST “sighting” that’s been produced by anyone since the Thylacines presumed extinction in 1936.
These photos constitute a series of photographs taken by Zack, a young man from the US, during his visit to relatives in Upper Stowport, Tasmania. He and his father allegedly found this animal on the side of the road while they were driving, and he took a series of photographs during the “30 – second” interaction he had with the animal.
What do you guys think? Is this real, or a hoax?
To listen to the full story behind this sighting, and an interview with the “sighter”, check out the full vid on Forrest’s YT channel.

🎉 Combined research from the University of Melbourne and Colossal Biosciences aims to save the northern quoll, an Australian marsupial threatened by invasive and poisonous cane toads, by creating genetically resistant offspring through CRISPR-edited induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs)!
The Northern Quoll, a vital predator in the Australian ecosystem, has seen a 75% population decline due to cane toads' introduction in the 1930s, with devastating impacts on native wildlife. This has made them very rare, and close to being extinct. Cane toads are a direct threat to northern quolls in Western Australia, Queensland and the Northern Territory. By introducing genetic resistance to cane toad toxins, they hope to restore balance to the ecosystem and protect other vulnerable species, such as goannas, crocodiles, and snakes, which are also affected by cane toads.
Initial experiments on dunnart cells (which Colossal has used for its research in Thylacine de-extinction, and is closely related to the quoll) have shown TEN-FOLD toxin resistance, demonstrating the potential for hereditary defence in susceptible native animals! Colossal aims to have the animals on the ground within 5 years. The team is working to derive iPSCs from northern quolls, correct toxin susceptibility at the cellular level, and ensure hereditary resistance, providing hope for the survival of the species and ecological recovery. This is a crucial step towards a world-first application of gene-editing technologies for conserving a threatened species!

26/04/2024

A new Javan rhinoceros calf has been spotted at an Indonesian national park, giving hope for the conservation of one of the world's most critically endangered mammals.
The calf, estimated to be between three and five months old, was spotted in footage captured last month by one of 126 camera traps installed in Ujung Kulon National Park on Java island. Javan Rhinos are one of the five remaining extant rhinoceros species across South Asia and Africa. They one of the smallest rhinoceros species, along with the Sumatran, or "hairy", rhinoceros. They are superficially similar to Indian rhinos, as they have plate-like, "armored" protective skin folds, but are slightly smaller in size.
Up until the mid-19th to about the early 20th century, the Javan rhinoceros had ranged beyond the islands of Java and Sumatra and onto the mainland of Southeast Asia and Indochina, northwest into East India, Bhutan, and the south of China. Today, it is one of the rarest rhinoceros species, with only one currently known wild population, and no individuals successfully kept in captivity. There are approximately 74 rhinos within the 120,000-hectare Ujung Kulon National Park.

05/04/2024

Five species previously thought to be one type of shark were moved to a different, and completely NEW family called Dichichthyidae ['Die-kick-thee-iday'], AKA Bristle Sharks. These sharks have unique head features (bristle-like denticles on their head, body and fins), and “banana shaped” egg cases made of densely packed fibres set them apart from other species. These sharks were previously thought to be part of the Pentanchidae (deep water catshark) family, but DNA testing showed that these sharks are indeed different from other similar species. Apart from this “reclassification,” a completely new species , the Roughback Bristle Shark was also found!
