A quick word before I go postal:

I must acknowledge the love and acceptance I’ve received from my own family during my transition. Even my dad, who was once very resistant, now addresses me by my correct name and sends me birthday cards for women. My family may not be perfect. They may not understand my choice to transition. But at least they have the decency to keep any hurtful opinions they may have to themselves.

No one in my family has ever been cruel to me.

Apparently, I am a rare exception.

Kudos to my family, and to all the families out there who are doing the right thing. Giving their transgender relatives the support, encouragement and sense of belonging they so desperately need during what is undoubtedly one of the hardest times of their lives.

---

Family, or Cult?

As a trans woman, I have come to expect the non-acceptance, intolerance and outright hatred that society holds for those like me. I understand why politicians and legislative bodies are proposing and enacting anti-trans laws across the country. I understand why advertisers and corporations would shy away from endorsements involving trans celebrities. I understand people’s fears and religious convictions when it comes to matters of gender identity.

I don’t agree with any of it, but I understand.

What I do not understand, though…?

Cruel families.

I work with trans people for a living – trans women, specifically.

In the last three-and-a-half years, I’ve had the honor of meeting and having heartfelt conversations with over 200 trans women from all across America, abroad and from every conceivable demographic. Every stage of transition, from the fully-closeted to the fully-out and everywhere in between. All ages, all colors, all backgrounds. People who are good, smart, hardworking, honest, generous, kindhearted, brave, etc. People with goals and careers. People who dream, hope and aspire…just like anyone else.

I have heard so many devastating accounts of family non-acceptance and cruelty, my heart can barely stand it.

Imagine, if you will…

A dear member of your family, after decades of pain and misery, has made the impossible decision to come out as transgender – which any trans person will tell you is one of the hardest choices we will ever face in our lifetime. This dear soul has been an integral part of your family dynamic for as long as you can remember. They have always been there for you.

How do you react? Do you support and encourage your dear family member as you’ve always done? Do you seek to learn and understand? Empathize?

Or do you shun, exclude, admonish and ridicule them because you disagree or simply refuse to understand? Do you laugh at them? Deadname them? Misgender them?

If a family member has confided in you that they are transgender, and your reaction was anything other than love, acceptance and support…then SHAME ON YOU!!

How dare you treat a member of your own family with such indifference and cruelty!

I’m calling out all families who have been unkind to their transgender relatives. What the f**k is wrong with you? Who the hell do you think you are to treat a member of your own family like garbage? Family is supposed to transcend things like politics and religion. Shame on you!

If membership in your so-called “family” is contingent upon the adherence to your antiquated religious beliefs and uneducated opinions, then you’re not a family at all.

You’re a f**king cult.

The End

As Elliot writes in PAGEBOY, "Let me just exist with you, happier than ever." His long and winding road. Our's too, as we can all relate to the shared feelings and experiences, different people. same or similar issues. Connection. Trust. Fear. Joy. The emergence of our true selves is all of our life's work. His book helps charts the course.

A children's book about Sarah McBride, I love it!! ❤️
(I wonder how many libraries will ban it without reading even a single page?)

Every young person deserves to see themselves in the stories they read and to know that they, too, can dream big dreams regardless of who they are.

I never thought there would be a children's book about my own journey, so it's definitely surreal to hold "Door by Door: How Sarah McBride Became America's First Openly Transgender State Senator" published by Random House Children's Books, authored by Meeg Pincus and illustrated by Meridth McKean Gimbel.

Extremely disappointing, but hardly surprising... 😔

Today members of the U.S. House voted on party lines in favor of HR 734, the so-called “Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act” which would prohibit transgender girls from participating in school sports, claiming that doing so would be a violation of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.

Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD, released the following statement:

"Legislators who voted today in favor of banning transgender girls from participating in school sports should be ashamed of themselves. Right now, gun violence is the number one cause of death to American children, yet extremist lawmakers ignore this reality to push bills that further endanger and isolate LGBTQ youth who just want to be themselves and play with their friends. Legislators have an obligation to stand up for all, not just some, of their constituents. Allowing students to participate in sports is about equal opportunity, the ability to make friends and belong, and stay active, healthy and happy. Young transgender people should not have to watch lawmakers debate their basic humanity. Legislators must meet with transgender youth, their families, teammates, and coaches who would be harmed by this dangerous legislation; propose ways to protect all youth; and stop pushing anti-LGBTQ discrimination in a phony attempt to protect women and girls. Protect all kids and let them play."

Just another reason to love the B-52s ❤

Dear fellow citizens,

We, The B-52’s, are deeply concerned about the numerous new bills that promote transphobia and discrimination against transgender individuals and drag artists, which have been introduced in the United States. We strongly denounce these bills and stand in solidarity with our LGBTQ+ community.
It is unacceptable that in the 21st century, we are witnessing such blatant attempts to undermine the rights of individuals based on their gender identity and sexual orientation. These bills not only violate the fundamental human rights of the affected individuals but also perpetuate a toxic culture of hate and intolerance that has no place in our society.

Join us in denouncing these bills and standing in support of our LGBTQ+ community. Together, let us work towards building a society that reflects our shared being and is truly just, inclusive, and welcoming for all.

With love,
The B-52s
