Factors making the destination country attractive for forcibly displaced people and migrants are called pull factors. Examples for these factors are security, political and other liberties, education and employment in labor markets that are in need of workers.

Most of the time there is only one factor causing people to flee. However, several factors can play a role. This phenomenon is called multidimensionality. When reporting on migration and forced displacement, it is also important to consider push factors which drive people away from their country of origin.

More information on push and pull factors can be found in module 3 of the UNESCO Handbook "Reporting on Migrants and Refugees" (mediaandmigration.com).

That's Mohamed. He comes from Guinea-Bissau, but hope for a better life has made him leave his home country. He's always played football and at some point was asked if he wanted to play in Spain.

Hopeful as he was, he started his journey to Europe via Senegal, Mali, Algeria and Morocco. He's been through a lot on the run.

Do you want to know how his story continued? Then check out the video on our Website: https://mediaandmigration.com/material-module-6-migration-stories-of-guinea-bissau/?pr

Migration and refugee coverage differs largely from country to country. Sometimes the focus is on individuals and their story. Other times the articles concentrate more on the political side and this point of view.

The articles "Moria - the EU's failed refugee policy" and "Surviving the ruins of Moria", for instance, have a completely different approach to the same topic. To improve refugee and migration coverage it is important to be on the ground, talk to individuals and see the human side behind the story.

Carlos comes from Guinea-Bissau and has built up a school there after the civil war. He was able to finance the project with donations from Germany. To him it's important to offer the children in Guinea-Bissau a perspective. That's why one of the subjects at school is sustainability. In principle, there is compulsory education in Guinea-Bissau, but the school situation is hard to control. State schools are also largely closed because teachers can't be paid.

This is Aida Alami, a Morrocco-based journalist reporting on migration mainly for the New York Times. In an interview she gives some advice on migration reporting:

Us: How do you verify the information someone gave you?
Alami: "If you interview someone, you ask them to provide documents. Let's say, if someone says 'our mosque was vandalized', you can look for news reports. If someone says 'I'm from Guinea', you can ask them to show you their ID."

Which organizations can you recommend as a source of information?
"The IOM, the International Organization for Migration. But keep in mind that they serve governments. I also really like GADEM, an anti-racist group working with migrants. Then there's a Morrocan organization for human rights. And the catholic church in the north. "
Is there anything journalists should keep in mind when talking to these organizations?
"Because of Morocco's migration policy and because the organizations want to continue their work, you really have to be very gentle in the way you approach them."

What should journalists keep in mind when talking to migrants and protagonists?
"Sometimes it's the small details that make it more vivid. Don't interrupt, follow up with questions, ask people to provide you with as many details as possible, and take your time."

The migration hump theory states that the number of migrants leaving a country increases as the standard of living improves, and only decreases once a country has reached a relatively high level of development. But is this theory actually true?

Journalist Maite Vermeulen from the Correspondent questions key assumptions about migration: https://thecorrespondent.com/606/a-key-assumption-about-migration-turns-out-to-be-wrong-taking-a-few-of-my-articles-down-with-it/80142431622-b44400c9

Many refugee children and migrants experienced trauma either before, during or after leaving their country. Many children suffer long-term problems, which is why journalists need to be able to identify trauma. Education on trauma not only helps prevent retraumatizing the child during interviews, but it can also help with retelling children’s stories and giving them a voice.

More information about reporting on traumatized migrants and refugees can be found in the UNESCO Handbook "Reporting on Migrants and Refugees" (www.mediaandmigration.com).

Did you know that trauma is characterized as an “injury of the soul”?

🧠 Several people including soldiers, refugees, accident victims or violence victims are more likely to become traumatized than others.

🧠 Their symptoms are based on hyperarousal, anger, fear, flashbacks, and avoidance. It is important to alleviate their suffering by a special treatment that is divided into three phases: stabilization, confrontation, and acceptance.
