Is Keir Starmer being honest about public finances?

Please note, this is not designed to portray support for Ukrainian people’s right to self-defence in opposition to removing the two-child benefit cap, it seeks to explore whether choices over how to spend money are more political than practical.

The Conservative Party suffers one of its largest ever electoral defeats as the Labour Party wins a majority in the region of 174 seats, with 412 seats in total. Vote share for the Labour Party remains below Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party loss in 2017. Above is a selection of “Portillo moments”, when major Conservative Party figures lose their seats.

What’s behind Reform Party performance?

Nigel Farage’s Reform Party is set to win 13 seats according to exit polls as reported by the BBC.

Even if this is not accurate, in many seats Reform is set to be the second largest party after Labour.

Whilst Angela Rayner of the Labour Party has said this is down to 14-years of Conservative Party failure, this view might betray a lack of real engagement with the issues that have left millions of voters feeling angry, pessimistic or politically homeless.

The “centrist Dad calculus” has been enough to win enough voter to govern in the UK, but typically on smaller and smaller vote shares and weak voter turnout, this suggests that the core issues that people have struggled with in the ladt 20 years may not have been seen as being adequately addressed by parties content to offer “fiscal responsibility” and support for NATO and the nuclear deterrent even as millions struggle to keep up with rent, mortgage or even payments for food.

Bezalel Smotrich said Gaza could not survive as an independent entity and it would be better for Palestinians there to leave for other countries.

The Israeli finance minister has also refused to transfer tax revenue to the Palestinian Authority in the Occupied West Bank.

He has been a consistent supporter of the colonial project of the Israeli government, according to Israeli journalist Ron Ben-Yishai, Smotrich wants to force Palestinians into a situation where their only options are to flee, to be subjugated or to be martyred.

Despite statements like this, the UK has continued to provide diplomatic and political support for the Israeli government’s bombing of Gaza, its illegal siege and its continuing illegal occupation of Palestinian Territories.

How Many Children Have to Die?

First Minuster of Scotland, Humza Yousaf’s asked that question to the UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Leader of the Opposition Keir Starmer after both rejected calls for a ceasefire.

Earlier UN Secretary-General António Guterres also said he was deeply concerned about “the clear violations of international humanitarian law” in Gaza.

Despite 6000 bombs being dropped on Gaza and over 2000 child deaths, both political leaders in the UK have failed to back calls for a ceasefire.

After 1 year, is Rishi Sunak doing a good job?

One year on from Rishi Sunak sweeping to power to replace the disastrous tenure of Liz Truss, many people in the UK are reflecting on the performance of a man that they didn’t elect.

From anti-migrant rhetoric, to high inflation and the cost of living crisis, coupled with disastrous by-election results and infighting within the Conservative Party, Rishi Sunak is fighting multiple battles on multiple fronts.

The sad reality is, despite his outward optimistic signalling, many of these battles are losing ones.

In the next year we plan to create more media with an empathetic edge, we want to visit, talk to and tell the stories of the forgotten, the downtrodden, those who suffer, often in silence.

“Empathy-powered media” isn’t just a statement, it’s an approach to media, an approach to calling about abuses of human rights, to holding power to account, no matter where it is.

Over 400,000 people waited more than 24 hours to be seen in A&E in England last year. That's nearly 1,100 people every day.

This is a shocking statistic, and it's a sign that our NHS is under immense pressure. Long waits in A&E are not only uncomfortable and stressful for patients, but they can also be dangerous. Evidence shows that patients who wait longer than 6 hours for admission are more likely to die.

We need to do more to support our NHS and ensure that everyone who needs emergency care can get it quickly and safely.

Every 8 minutes, a family in the UK is served with an eviction notice. This shocking statistic from the charity Shelter demonstrates the powerfully negative impacts of our housing crisis, affecting child poverty, homelessness, and strains on our social services.

We need to do more to help people stay in their homes and build a society where everyone has a safe and affordable place to live.

Rupert Murdoch Steps Down as Chair of Fox and News Corp, Handing Over Reins to Son Lachlan

Rupert Murdoch, the 92-year-old billionaire media mogul who has dominated the news industry for decades, is stepping down as Chair of Fox and News Corp. His son, Lachlan Murdoch, will take over the role.

This move comes at a time when the concentration of media power in the hands of a few wealthy individuals is a growing concern. News Corp and Fox are two of the largest media corporations in the world, and their ownership by the Murdoch family gives them immense control over the information that people consume.

Media corporations like News Corp and Fox have a history of subverting fact for profit. They have been accused of spreading misinformation and propaganda, and of using their platforms to attack their political opponents.

The fact that Murdoch is passing on control of his media empire to his son is a reminder of the way in which hereditary power can erode democratic principles. When a small number of families control the media, they have the ability to shape public opinion and influence political outcomes.

That’s not normal is it?

1,600 Metropolitan police officers are being investigated for the abuse of women.

This is not just a shocking statistic, it is a reflection of an endemic issue within the institution of policing. When 1,600 officers are accused of abusing women, it is clear that there is a systemic problem.

The Met Police has a long history of misogyny and violence against women. From the Sarah Everard case to the countless stories of women who have been harassed, assaulted, and r***d by police officers, it is clear that the Met Police is not safe for women.

The solution to this problem is not to simply reform the Met Police. It is to divest from the Met Police and invest in communities and alternatives. We need to invest in programs that support survivors of abuse, and in programs that build trust between the community and the police.

We need to invest in alternatives to policing, such as community mediation and conflict resolution programs. We need to invest in programs that address the root causes of crime, such as poverty, inequality, and lack of opportunity.

We need to create a world where women are safe, and where they do not have to fear the police.
