We are delighted to announce that Loro Parque has been awarded a special recognition at the prestigious Excellence Cruceros 2023 Awards. The ceremony took place yesterday, and we are proud to share that Director of Administration, Cybell Kiessling, accepted the award on behalf of the organisation from the President of the Port Authority, Carlos González.

This recognition is a testament to our tireless efforts and commitment to animal welfare, wildlife and nature conservation since its inception in 1972. We are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate our 50th anniversary and the recognition it brings.

Today, European zoos have launched the Zoo Science Library, an open-access database containing more than 600 scientific articles to promote biodiversity research. The library includes international studies carried out by zoos and aquariums of the Association of Zoological Gardens (VdZ) in Germany and the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA).

The catalogue, which includes studies published between 2021 and 2022, includes Spanish entities such as Loro Parque and the Poema del Mar aquarium. Loro Parque's professionals have published 269 scientific communications throughout its history, including 141 scientific articles related to various zoological subjects. Of these, 27 articles published between 2021 and 2022 will contribute to enrich the new online library.

Definitely one of the best ways to promote education with free content for all. Join us in celebrating this important achievement and spread the news to your family and friends – together we can promote biodiversity research!

Once again, this year, Loro Parque welcomed the carnival delegations from Düsseldorf, Bonn, Neuss, Hamborn, Eschborn, Mönchengladbach and Duisburg.

The Düsseldorf and Duisburg festive committee, consisting of more than 100 carnivalists, travelled with our train through the city to Loro Parque, where they enjoyed a pleasant and sunny day.

This annual and highly anticipated visit is made possible by the town twinning between Puerto de la Cruz and Düsseldorf, thus promoting exchange and promotion of one of the most popular carnivals in Europe among Canarian society.

Did you know that at Loro Parque we have the BEST sponsors?

She is Mrs. Globig, who came all the way from Germany to meet Gulliver, the jaguar she is sponsoring, in person. She also let us know that any friend of Gulliver's is also her friend!

So if you were thinking of sponsoring Gulliver or any other animal inhabitant of Loro Parque, we invite you to write to us at [email protected].

Every day there are many more of us who are part of the wonderful Loro Parque family!

What we offer you to read in the following link is really shocking and even disturbing!

According to a study carried out by independent experts in Germany, many of the so called animal rights NGOs do not have anything to do with the primary purpose: protecting the animals! Their entire existence is based on raising funds to ensure their economic stability and comfort.

This is something that we have been alerting the interested public on numerous occasions, above all, because these organizations often use anti-zoo arguments as their principal strategy to raise money from the unsuspected public.

If you are really an animal lover and are interested in supporting the animal welfare then inform yourself about what these NGOs are really about and choose the right action: make a visit to a modern zoological institution, which, like in case of Loro Parque and many other ones, do real contribution to animal welfare and wildlife conservation in nature.

A false killer whale that had stranded with signs of malnutrition and weakness, could be returned to the sea after more than a week under human care and recovering.

Once again, the work of the modern zoos as conservation centers is valued, as they are the only places with enough practical knowledge to be able to attend cases like this one.

From Loro Parque and together with Loro Parque Fundación and various private and governmental organizations, we have developed different actions, such as, for example, the creation of a pontoon capable of refloating cetaceans, thanks to which we have conducted several workshops to raise awareness about the dangers faced by animals in the wild and also communicate to volunteers and expert staff the first aid to be given to marine mammals.

We have a huge reason for a celebration!

Reverse the Red recently published our Lear's Macaw project as one of their case studies.

We are certain that you remember that Loro Parque, together with the Loro Parque Fundación, received two pairs of parrots from the Brazilian government in 2006 in the hope that the Fundación would successfully breed the species and save it from extinction.

Just six months after the arrival of these two pairs, breeding began and since then more than 40 parrots have been born in Tenerife. The aim of the Foundation has always been to allow these parrots to return to their natural environment and to guarantee their long-term conservation. In recent years, a total of 17 parrots have been returned to Brazil.

Reverse the Red is an international initiative that promotes strategic actions for the survival of species and ecosystems.

Machote keeps moving forward!

The loggerhead turtle that was returned to the sea more than a month ago and that was recovering in the Deep Sea of Poema del Mar after being found in critical condition, continues its journey without any pause!

Thanks to the fact that Loro Parque Fundación has financed the installation of a satellite tag that allows us to collect essential information about her movement, we know that Machote, after travelling many kilometres, continues southwards along the African coast.

This route seems to indicate that it is heading towards an area in Senegal to which other loggerhead turtles have travelled, which would indicate that it is possibly an important area to protect in order to contribute to the conservation of the Caretta caretta, a species that is in a vulnerable state according to the IUCN Red List.

The work of modern aquariums and zoos such as Poema del Mar and Loro Parque is definitely essential to care for and protect endangered species and to ensure the well-being of the species and their environment.

Today we share the tragic video of an Atlantic humpback dolphin captured in Nigeria.

This is a critically endangered species according to the IUCN and with which Loro Parque Fundación is working in an attempt to conserve some of its last populations in Senegal. Remember that at Loro Parque Fundación we have more than 200 projects around the world for which we have invested more than 22.8 million dollars, all with the aim of being able to contribute to the conservation of biodiversity.

Today is World Jellyfish Day!

And we want to share some curiosities and interesting facts about these fascinating animals:

💦 Their composition is 98% water.
💦 Although they have a bad reputation, they are essential for the balance of the ecosystem.
💦 Their stinging cells serve them both to protect themselves from a predator, as well as to immobilise the prey they eat.
💦 Most jellyfish species cannot swim, they float or are carried by currents.
💦 There are jellyfish in all the world's oceans.

And now, here is a challenge: how many jellyfish are there, in total, in these four images? Let's see in the comments if you can get it right! 👀

What a pleasure to be sharing a positive news!

Such a story with a happy ending demonstrates just how indispensable the work of modern zoos and aquariums in the rescue, recovery and release of wild species is!

All the knowledge accumulated by experts working with animals in human care can later be of great value for their counterparts in the wild.

SeaWorld rescue saved a dolphin that was displaced after Hurricane Ida's storm surge.

This publication focuses on jaguars, but deforestation and fires are devastating large areas, wiping out the Amazon's rich biodiversity and contributing to the decline and eventual extinction of wild species.

We need to be aware, as a species, that our actions have fatal consequences for animals, and we can only ensure a future for new generations if we take care of the planet.

Animals deserve it, nature deserves it. Let us not continue to destroy our home.

In August 2019, an unprecedented number of fires ripped through the Brazilian Amazon, sparking worldwide interest in reports of burning rainforest. In fact, the majority of blazes were on land that had already been stripped of forest. According to a report from the Monitoring of the Andean Amazon Pr...

Today, on World Rhino Day 🦏, we want to remember the important work that modern zoos carry out in the conservation of species, especially when it comes to those in critical danger of extinction.

At Loro Parque, together with Loro Parque Fundación and various organisations, we were able to save 10 different species from extinction. In addition, we developed, and continue to do so, more than 200 projects around the world with an investment of more than 22.8 million dollars that have been fully allocated to protect biodiversity on 5 continents.

We share a graph from the International Rhino Foundation and hope that the numbers continue to grow.

We are pleased to present our annual State of the Rhino report ahead of World Rhino Day on 9/22. This comprehensive report provides current population estimates and trends, as well as key challenges and conservation developments for the five surviving rhino species in Africa and Asia. All five species need our continued help. Read the report at: https://bit.ly/3q0qodJ

These images are so hard to watch....

In the face of such cruelty, we can only say that we are absolutely against this kind of cruel capture methods which are proof that in many places cetaceans are still considered vermin and fishermen eliminate them ruthlessly so that they do not reduce their catches. These are practices that have to be eliminated.

We need to make this world a better place, both for us and for the animals.

Only 17% of people in the Faroe Islands consume whale or dolphin meat - so why are thousands of animals still dying?

Do you know what symbiosis is?

It is the biological interaction that results in mutual benefits for the vital development of organisms of different species.

Here, while cleaning the gills of the emperor red snapper (Lutjanus sebae), we can see a case of perfect symbiosis.

What other cases of symbiosis do you know of?

The vulnerability of animals in the wild, where we cannot help them, is worrying.

The youngest of the southern resident orcas, Tofino, born in 2019, became ill in 2020, and her condition has now worsened considerably.

As a result, whale-watching boats have been required to stay at a safe distance so as not to interfere with Tofino's possible improvement. Let's remember that underwater noises are possibly causing discomfort for the inhabitants of the ocean bottom.

At Loro Parque we continually do what we believe is best for the welfare of the animals, unfortunately on many occasions science and research are not enough and life takes its natural course.

We hope to see Tofino healthy and swimming with his family very soon.

Dr. John Durban from Southall Environmental Associates said that by comparing J56's measurements to young whales of similar age, they categorize her condition as poor, giving her a significantly elevated risk of death over the coming months.

Time for environmental enrichment! As you already know, the team of keepers of Loro Parque works every day in order to provide the maximum welfare to the animals.

Among many diverse techniques, they use environmental enrichment, which is aimed to facilitate the development of the animal's natural behaviour.

The results of this research actually consolidate a very valuable tool for cetacean research and conservation.

The study also tries to shed light on something that is very difficult to measure: how overfishing and human-generated prey reduction affect the survival of killer whales and other cetaceans.

The fattest orcas are the likeliest to survive — and declining body condition is a warning that death could be near, new research published on southern resident orcas shows. It also identifies key rivers for J pod orca sustenance in...

Situations like this demonstrate that love for animals is not enough and that the experience and knowledge of conservation institutions and centres such as Loro Parque are fundamental in order to be able to offer reliable alternatives that allow the animals to survive in the face of the adversities that nature throws in their way.

The recent rescue of a killer whale calf off the coast of New Zealand is once again raising eyebrows at the questionable decisions of anti-zoo advocate Ingrid Visser. Co-written by Dr. Jason Bruck.

"A natural disaster of exceptional magnitude" is how the Greek Prime Minister describes the fires that have destroyed almost 100,000 hectares of forest and farmland in the last two weeks.

For its part, the European Forest Fire Information System confirms that this is the worst wave of wildfires since 2007. Not only is this a tragic event from the standpoint of the direct adverse impact on the natural habitats but also an shocking evidence of the changes in the climate that continuously lead to ever more dramatic and damaging natural phenomena.
