Before we get into the laughter of WTM S3 I wanted to take a moment, as a South African and as a womxn from South Africa, to acknowledge the sadness, the frustration and the pain that my country and my sisters have felt this past week and have felt for years on end. The brutal r**e and murder of Uyinene Mrwetyana, a 19 year old woman from the University of Cape Town has left our country shaken and we have not been able to breathe since. Her passing has felt like the tipping point for the womxn of South Africa as we have seen our friends, families and communities torn apart at the hands of vile men. Men who r**e, who beat and who murder. Men who have been aided by a system that chooses to blame the victim instead of addressing the root of the problem - men, ra**ng and murdering womxn. I sit here with the privilege of a white woman holding a German passport and a mother who rests easier knowing I am safer here than at home. With that in mind I would like to thank the thousands who have marched on Parliament today to protest gender based violence, to demand that our government declare gender based violence a state of emergency in South Africa, and to speak, and scream and cry for the womxn who no longer have a voice to do so. I love you, and I stand with you. - Julia
