UBOTEX: Celebrating A Philanthropist and Valuable Asset in Nigeria's Business World

✍️ Aniekan Sunday

Many have turned themselves to town criers, making loudest noise in an effort to gain relevance in their different sphere of life, but there's man who dislike blowing his trumpets, despite his five star performance both in his entrepreneurial and social journey.

Elder Ubong Bassey Obot Akpan Umoh, a proud son of Nung Akpan Umoh Royal Family, Ikot Akpabin Village, Asutan Ekpe Kingdom in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria - the CEO/MD of UBOTEX Limited has paid his dues in the business world, and gained recognition both at the State, National and Internationally.

Aside his undiluted support and commitment towards the progress of young Akwa Ibomites and Nigerians in the Business Community over the years, Elder Obot sees honestly, ethics and humility as his watch words.

Today, that young 'village boy' who was brought up and acquired his primary education in his village, has a typical story of rising from rags to riches. From a 'moimoi'/waterleaf hawker, and a 'cement sales' boy' to a renowned business merchant. His success story is so appealing to the masses, and serves as an inspiration not only to young Nigerians, but to the generations unborn.

In one of his recent interactions with young people, Elder Ubong Obot recalled the days of his humble beginning. He said; "I'm from a poor background, with my mother, late Elsie Bassey Obot who was a strong businesswoman, as the backbone. She used to travel from our village (Ikot Akpabin) to sell palm oil in Lagos where her sister was based.
Sadly, we lost her in an accident during one of her business trips to Lagos. After my Mum's death, life took a difficult turn for the family. I was quite young then. I and my twin sister were the second to the last born amongst the seven children given birth to by my Mum."

At a very tender age, the young Ubong began his business carrier by selling kerosene at a local market in his community - Urua Ikot Akpabin. He later moved to stay with his Maternal Uncle - a businessman who then based in Zaria, Kaduna State. That was where he saw himself hawking 'Moimoi' and waterleafs on streets. It was still part of his journey to greatness.

On returning back from Zaria after about a year, he was enrolled to acquire his secondary education at Ndikpo Grammar School, Ikot Obio Nko, but he left after the third year to stay with his senior Sister and her husband (a businessman) in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State Capital. There, he became a 'sales boy' to his in-law who then owned a Building Materials' shop along Ikot Ekpene Road. He served him faithfully. Several years after, he was settled to start his own business with about two hundred bags of cements and a shop.

To cut the lengthy story short, the 'small shop' with two-hundred (200) bags of cement had long metamorphosed into an expanded 'Corporate firm' and many branches across the nooks and crannies of Akwa Ibom State and beyond. A clear example of 'grass to grace'

Sincerity, humility, commitment and determination were the simple tools Elder Obot single handedly used to fight and defeated the poor background and challenges faced during his tender age. Today, Ubotex is a brand and a household name to Nigerians and people in other countries.

Even without occupying any political office, Elder Obot has been investing his wealth of experience and hard-earned resources gathered from his private business to impact and transform lives positively, especially at the grassroots level. His numerous contributions, financially and intellectually to the success of many other Nigerians and Akwa Ibomites in the business field has given the people the needed comfort and relief especially in the present economic situation witnessed in the country.

As a patriotic son of the state, he has always been there to backup the present administration in ways that makes people at the 'lower class' and the downtrodden feel the positive impact of Mr Udom Emmanuel’s administration.

A clear testimony of his passion for human development are; the financial assistance/scholarship grants given to many Students studying in respective institutions of their choice; bills paid to patients in different hospitals both in Nigeria and outside the country; his regular visits and donations to orphanage homes; business startup fund given to young entrepreneurs, widow and the less privileges. Even the numerous job opportunities created for the youths of the State through his consistent expanded firm - 'Ubotex Limited'.

Recently, he handed over a well constructed and equipped hospital with about fourty (40) beds capacity located at Ikot Akpabin village to The Apostolic Church, and equally undertook the payment of salary to workers for the period of five (5) years.

No wonder the 'Police Officers' Wives Association' (POWA) recently accorded him with an 'Award of Excellence'. While presenting the award on behalf of POWA, the wife of immediate past Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State - Mrs. Joyce Amiegheme stated thus:

"when I inherited POWA's Secretariat Building project and realized how massive it was, I was perplexed because I never at that moment knew how and where to start from, but I got a whisper that there's a man whose heart had been tailor-made by God Almighty to support and encourage lofty project' of that nature. Without hesitation, we contacted him and he did more than what we expected. Elder Ubong Obot assisted us to pull the project off the ground. He open-heartedly received us and financially supported us. That's why we are here to tell him 'thank you'.

"We considered to thank you through this Award because you have made tremendous impacts in POWA. We have also seen and heard the developmental strides, philanthropist gesture and impacts you've created in the lives of the people. We're urging you not to relent on your good works.

Elder Ubong Obot's sterling leadership qualities and contributions to the well being of Akwa Ibom people and Nigerians as a whole have left so many with no option than to believed that 'good people still exist'.

His commitment and passion for human capacity building over the years have developed beyond reasoning to an extent that when his name is being mentioned in any vicinity within the Locals and State, he is celebrated in some amazing fashion. A true reflection of this "is the recent internal roads he facilitated for construction in his community - Ikot Akpabin. He danced to the tune of Sir Thomas Browne, who opined that "Charity begins at home".

Through his human capital development and grassroot mobilization initiative, UBOTEX has empowered thousands of Akwa Ibom sons and daughters with small and medium scale businesses and linking entrepreneurs to the global market using his network and contacts.

Over years now, it has been a routine elaborate Christmas celebration with his people in home town, Ikot Akpabin in Ibesikpo Asutan LGA that always come with empowerment. The routine Christmas celebration and empowerment is growing every year. This year's edition of the Christmas celebration coming soon is tipped to be exceptional. Who knows how many people he intend and budgeted to empower again during the yuletide celebration.

These and many more does not only qualify Ubotex as a philanthropist, but have also proven him as a man with a good heart and conscience, who is not interested in where one comes from.

Elder Obot is a detribalized and humble individual loved and accepted by the grassroots people, majority which constitutes people from different political affiliations and electorates.

He is a leader who perfectly understand the problems of the common man in the street. At all times, he places the welfare of others as top priority ahead of private and family issues.

However, the philosophical thought of John Maxwell who once said "A man of integrity does not climb to the mountain to shout with trumpet to gain votes, but his pedigree and virtue will honor him with the needed mandate to lead," really describes the kindly nature, sterling leadership qualities, humane and humble disposition of Ubotex, which endears him to the people of the state as one of the most credible leaders with integrity.

As a leader with exceptional strength, ability and vision, he lived his life with honesty and integrity and has never been afraid to roll up his sleeves and get dirty in order satisfy his people needs.

In all, Akwa Ibomites and Nigerians indeed have reasons to celebrate this resourceful, energetic, focused and committed leader, a good father, a champion of empowerment of the people, father of the orphans, friend of the needy, supporter of men, women and the youths, the amiable, dynamic, enterprising, creative, kind and selfless leader. He is a product of fate and hard-work. His fame has spread far and wide, Nationally and Internationally through his dint of hard-work, vision and resilience.

As the saying goes A diligent man is not only an asset to himself but to his community, Elder Ubong Obot commitment to the development and wellbeing of the people of the State portray him as a man of value and accomplishment.

His unequaled achievements definitely speak volume of this highly experienced and astute leader. Obot's style of mobilizing the people confirms him as a strategic leader who take time to carefully plan and remain focused in implementation process.

Once Again, Happy Birthday Elder Ubong Bassey Obot Akpan Umoh, a proud son of Nung Akpan Umoh Royal Family, Ikot Akpabin Village, Asutan Ekpe Kingdom in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

We must Market A'Ibom as a Tourist Destination - Pastor Umo Eno
.. As Group Holds Citizens' Square

Worried by the increasing negative portrayal of Akwa Ibom State and its people in some sections of the media, governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Pastor Umo Eno has advised that the state be packaged and marketed as a tourist and investment destination which it really is, rather than dwell on the negatives.

Pastor Eno gave the advice at a citizens' square, an enlightenment programme, and the inauguration of a socio-political group, "Sad Da Initiative" held in Uyo.

He noted that the state is blessed with rich human and natural resources, adding that its successive leaders have greatly contributed to the Akwa Ibom of today which is worthy of celebration.

The governorship hopeful maintained that the Governor Udom Emmanuel-led administration has been superlative in its developmental strides in the three gateways of land, sea, and air which according to him, must be supported, well packaged and marketed as a destination which it has now become.

Pastor Eno who is a seasoned entrepreneur, noted that as the 2023 general elections draw nearer, the state needs a leader with capacity to improve on the developmental projects of Governor Emmanuel, create private jobs and stimulate the economy for the good of all.

He stressed that Akwa Ibom is a state with inumerable potentials, and advised everyone to be constructive and developmental in their contributions to state building rather than negatively portraying the state before potential investors.

While commending the group for organizing the event, he urged them to massively mobilize for PVC registration and collection to enable them vote in the 2023 general elections.

Earlier in his inaugural lecture, tagged, "Marketing the New Akwa Ibom: the Umo Eno narrative, Prof. Peter Esuh noted that Akwa Ibom is blessed and has all it takes for greatness.

Prof Esuh who is a lead scholar in Marketing Communications and Applied Rhetorics, stressed that it was imperative to package the new Akwa Ibom along side the golden gift, Pastor Eno, who has offered himself to serve and advance the course of leadership in the state.

He said he has known Pastor Eno since 1997 and can attest to his strength of character to drive the new Akwa Ibom adding that when Akwa Ibom is well packaged, it will lead to developmental growth that can be copied by other states.

The pioneer Dean, Faculty of Communication Studies, University of Uyo emphasized that in marketing Akwa Ibom, the Umo Eno narrative must be that of empowering youths with knowledge and skills and packaging them even for export where necessary.

While saying that marketing begins and ends with the people, he said Pastor Umo Eno is a pastor, and will not allow his sheep to go a stray, noting "
If God has given us a shepherd for a Governor, we should embrace and support him for the overall good of Akwa Ibom State."

At the event were former state Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev Nduese Ekwere, wife of the former military Governor, Mrs Funmi Idongesit-Nkanga, Deputy DG of Umo Eno Campaign organisation, Akparawa Godwin Ntukeudeh, and spokesperson, Prince Chris Abasi Eyo, and many others.

The Accusers and Pastor Umo Eno's Certificate

By Osondu Ahirika

Accused of purported Certificate forgery, the matter is under litigation with Mr Akan Okon, one of the Governorship aspirants as complainant. Umo Eno has since provided his Certificate which is in now the most famous private document in the public record.

The howling mob whose obsession is chattering about Pastor Umo Eno's Certificate won't retreat even when truth stares them in the face. In their ungodly quest to crucify him, they have toiled fruitlessly for dirt to tar the image of the leading Akwa Ibom State Governorship candidate.

Suddenly, the narrative has changed. His few opponents and traducers are now gossiping that the result is very poor. They are right but they are incurable wrong. I will shortly return to the Certificate 'forgery', but only after this short story.

A certain boy, Derek, always came late to school and his teacher never stopped punishing him for it. Each day he cam late, he will be flogged. With tears he begins his daily routine in school.

One morning the teacher was riding his sporty Chopper bicycle to School when he saw Derek pushing a paralysed man on a wheelchair to an Old people care home. It was already 7, 40am. Derek re-emerged and without noticing his School teacher started running with every bit of strength in him to school.

By the time he arrived the school which was so far away from the home, it was already 9 30am. He was late again. He walked up to his teacher as always and stretched his palms for the 3 strokes he gets each day for being late. To his surprise, nothing like that happened.

His teacher who couldn't hold back tears cuddled him and said, "my boy, I'm so sorry, I didn't ever ask why you never came early to school. Now I know you have to help your father to the care home every morning before you can leave to school and return to wheel him back home after school."

Folk's, we judgementally so often play the punishing teacher. Lacking in empathy and bereft of any scintilla of commiserations, we run down the feeble or the erring without asking questions.

On May 25, 2022 while delivering his acceptance speech as the elected Governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Pastor Umo Eno told an abridged story of his life. He said in part:

"Standing here this afternoon, and fully conscious of this inspirational moment, I cannot help but get a little emotional. I was born in the Police barracks and those who understand how dreary life was in the barracks, especially in the years I grew up there, will understand what I am talking about here.

In those days, hope seemed a distant object and most of what one saw, appeared to be conditioned to bring out the worst instincts in you, but through the will to succeed and overcome adversities, I summoned hope and God answered my prayers. I lost my father when I was young, and all seemed bleak, but my late Mother, a true Amazon, summoned hope and went on her knees to pray and God answered her prayers."

His lacklustre background didn't lay his back on the ground. He rose above the odds. As a testimony he added, "...Today, God has blessed me in many ways words cannot describe. This moment, therefore, represents the ultimate vindication of those who trust in the Lord in accordance with Psalm 125 that "those who trust in the lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever." If the child of a lowly maidservant like me could overcome and thrive, and today, has just been given the nomination to solicit for your support to be the next Governor of this great State, you too, can and you will!"

Like Governor Udom Emmanuel said, Pastor Umo Eno's story is our story. We all can relate to his story and indeed, every man of goodwill should be inspired by his story of grass to grace rather than despise it.

I have read a lot of rubbish about Pastor Umo Eno not passing his West African School Certificate, WASC at first attempt. The fact, like Dr Schuuler said is that, failing is not final and success in not ending.

After a first attempt in 1981 as allowed by our Education System, Umo Eno went on to clear his papers in 1983 on the second attempt. That's not something to be ashamed of, or is it? I challenge his mockers to tell us their story and educational status and publish their certificates. Let's see if they can.

Most of them who hired someone - what we call, 'candikots', to write the exams for them or went to so-called special exam centres where they cheated their ways to get a Certificate are making all the noise.

In their blind folly, they can't even ask themselves why a man would want to forge a result and still present a bad one with just one credit. Haba! People should have commonsense and try being rational beings.

Growing up for Pastor Umo Eno was rough as he was the first of six sibblings and had to push through life to ensure he complemented his parents to provide for them. The beauty is that today he can exhale happily that all of them without exception are doing well and own their homes.

He had to sacrifice his early education to feign for them. Notwithstanding, he is today not a push over as he went back to school gaining admission to the University under the matured students program.
This means there were some exemptions. The matured programme admission is not accessed through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB. So don't be flippant with ignorance about how the University of Uyo, where he is currently studying for a PhD granted him admission.

Let me leave a word of advice for these folks who are ejauculating in futile error over Pastor Umo Eno and his future which is assured in God - go get a life and think of improving yourself. Pastor Umo Eno is a made man whom God has helped. He can only go higher.

MISCONDUCT: Village Head may be arrested over alleged misappropriation of funds
..accuses of illegal selling of govt, community properties

The Village Head of Afaha Ikot Obio Nkan in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Eteidung Okon Bassey Umoren has been accused of involving in a series of misconducts ranging from misappropriation of community funds to dubious selling of community and government properties.

Impeccable sources from the community alleged that some properties including two (2) electricity transformers and lands have been dubiously sold out by the Village Head without the consent of the village Council and other indigenes of Afaha Ikot Obio Nkan.

The sources who preferred anonymity for safety reasons noted that two (2) transformers belonging to the community (Afaha Ikot Obio Nkan) kept under the custody of the village head have not been found anymore.

"Information reaching us is that he had sold out those transformers".

Meanwhile, the family (Ekpuk) heads and other community leaders are said to have dragged the village head to both the clan head and Paramount Ruler's palace to explain how and why the community and government's lands were sold without their consent.

"The land was donated for the building of Primary School to Government by the Community decades ago. But currently, those lands are occupied by private buildings of some individuals who are not even from our village. How the people got to build on those lands is what I'm still imagining. But the information we've gotten from the occupants and owners of those buildings is that the village head knew how they got to own those lands and that they even paid 'Community Development Fees' before they built those houses there."

The land issue is not only about the ones donated for the building of the primary school, but the ones owned by the community which had equally been sold to a church (name withheld).

"The matter was reported to the Clan Council of Ibesikpo and equally go the Paramount Ruler of Ibesikpo Asutan LGA. After several findings, the owners of those buildings were asked to vacate those places within six (6) months."

"The State Ministry of Education equally came inspection and discovered that the boundary of the school had been tampered with. They discovered that many houses built around the school premises are on the government land."

"Aside from that, before now we used to have an electrical problem until God blessed us with two (2) transformers to replace with the two (2) old ones."

"The new transformers were installed, while the other old ones were kept under the village head's custody (at his compound). Nothing happened to the old transformers, and the agreement was to find and install those transformers at some location in the community that needed it, as to bring down loads on the two new ones."

"The village head didn't allow that plan to become a reality, but instead sold out those transformers."

On the issue of misappropriation of community funds, the source said;
"For a long time now, he has refused to constitute a village Council. We don't have a village council because he has been scaring away everybody in the village. He's the one occupying all the posts in the village. He is the village head, the chairman of the village council, secretary, youth leader, and even the women leader."

"In fact, for about sixteen (16) years now, he hasn't rendered any account for the "Community Development fees" he has been collected on behalf of the village. Even the hundred thousand naira (100,000) usually given to the village through him by the management of Afaha Market over the years, he hasn't been remitting it."

"He is running the village as his private estate, and we are not comfortable with the situation of things in the village."

However, when contacted to ascertain the many allegations leveled against him, Eteidung Okon Bassey Umoren, who said he retired as a lecturer from the University of Uyo and holds a Master's Degree in Education and Administration, denied his involvement in any of the alleged crimes.

He words, "the money from Afaha Market that they are talking about was for the clean-up (sanitation) of the market, it wasn't meant to be paid to family heads.
"We're making arrangements to put things in order in the village council".

"Jehovah God knows that I have never trespassed on that school land. It was the village that gave that land to the school, why would I trespassed on it?"

"Before now, we didn't have a village hall, so we had to sell a shrine to build that village Hall. The shrine belongs to the village, not any individual. And as a village head, I have a right to sell it for the development of the village."

On the transformers issue, he said;
"We don't have any transformer problem. The two (2) transformers they're talking about were scraps. It wasn't good for anything.

"Some people came one day and demanded to take those transformers for repair. I obliged, and they took them away. That was how those transformers left my compound. I didn't sell them. It's about seven (7) years now since they came and carry those transformers" - Eteidung Umoren narrated.
