On Day 3 of the this would be the culminating fight. At , Gen Lee focused his attack, which has become known as on this patch of grass in the middle of the Union line. 12,000 soldiers stepped off, headed for this point. cannons and infantry were ready and waiting. One of the amazing stories is about a young Major (at the time) from Wisconsin. Alonzo Cushing stood his ground at this battery, Battery A, 4th US Artillery. He continued to command his troops, even after being mortally wounded in the abdomen. It was heroism like this from Cushing, and thousands of others, that won the day, and the battle for the Union. As you might imagine, Cushing won the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions. What you might be surprised to know is that he didn’t receive it until 2014. Alonzo Cushing is the last recipient of the Medal of Honor from the Civil War

This is the Wheatfield, where on day 2 of the Union Gen. Dan Sickles (without orders) moved his troops 3/4 of a mile forward of his assigned location to seak higher ground. In doing so he stumbled upon a attack by Longstreet. The fighting that ensued was some of the fiercest of the battle. His movement opened a huge hole in the line, which was temporarily, and courageously filled by the . They would lose nearly 90% of their men in less than 15 minutes. But, their heroics bought Gen. Hancock time to find permanent replacements for the whole that Sickles created.

By the end of the day Sickles lost thousands of men AND his leg. Him, being a boisterous showboat, made a large deal out of being taken off the field and to save the leg in a whiskey barrel. The leg went on display, and Sickles, himself, would sit by it at the museum…waiting for someone to inquire about it so he could talk about his actions at Gettysburg.

On day 1 of the Battle of Gettysburg this man, John Burns, was a citizen in the tow. He picked up his weapon and joined the Union lines. What makes this even more amazing? He was a 69 year old veteran of the War of 1812! This is one of MANY amazing stories from Gettysburg

After the official trip concluded Brian and Jason went to Washington DC for a quick tour of the city highlights. We even met up with our friend, Ned, who was on the travel trip with us. Thank you to Founding Forward and Arch for making this trip happen. Also, a huge thank you to Galen and our bus driver Betty for their incredible job of driving and managing 46 people! Well done!
