Sharks in Brazil tested positive for co***ne

Rachel Ann Hauser Davis, a biologist at Brazil’s Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, told NPR that they dissected 13 wild sharpnose sharks near Rio de Janeiro, all of which tested positive for co***ne in their muscles and livers, indicating chronic exposure.

Narcotraffickers often toss bales of co***ne overboard when pursued, but Hauser Davis suggests that the sharks were more likely exposed to co***ne through wastewater contamination in Rio de Janeiro. The drug’s presence in the water likely stems from human use and illegal refining labs.

Co***ne affects the brain and could cause hyperactive behavior in sharks, though further research is needed.

This finding adds to growing research on marine wildlife and co***ne. For instance, a 2018 study in the UK found that eels exposed to co***ne had trouble mating. Tracy Fanara, an environmental engineer at the University of Florida, told NPR that exposure to recreational drugs can disrupt marine species’ essential migration periods.

Fanara, who participated in the documentary Co***ne Sharks, noted that while co***ne isn’t the biggest problem sharks face, it highlights the broader issue of human pollution affecting ocean life. “Co***ne does a good job of getting people’s attention,” she said.

The family of the late singer, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba popularly known as Mohbad has conducted a second autopsy to unravel the cause of his d£ath.

The autopsy, ordered by Ms T.A. Shotobi, Magistrate of the Coroner Court, is part of an ongoing investigation into the cause of the artist’s d£ath.

A statement signed on behalf of the family by a member of the legal team, Monisola Odumosu, said the autopsy was conducted on Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20.

Odumosu stated that the family would proceed to carry out toxicology and histology tests on the necessary samples already obtained if the post-mortem procedure failed to reveal the cause of death.

This latest development follows a court order from June 26, 2024, allowing Joseph Aloba, Mohbad’s father, to commission an independent autopsy by a licensed and certified pathologist. The court mandated that Mr. Aloba bear all costs associated with the examination, evaluation, and autopsy.

The comprehensive procedure conducted last Friday was witnessed by a limited group, including Mr. Joseph Aloba, the appointed forensic pathologist and his team, and Aloba’s legal representatives.

Wunmi Aloba, the deceased’s wife, was represented by her legal team and her appointed pathologist who observed the procedure.

The Coroner Court has emphasized its commitment to a thorough and transparent investigation to determine the cause of Mohbad’s death, aiming to provide closure for the family and maintain the integrity of the judicial process. Further updates are expected following the completion of the second part of the autopsy, if deemed necessary.

Late Mohbad d!ed on September 12, 2023 in controversial circumstances. The pathologist earlier employed to investigate the cause of death of late singer on May 15 told the Coroner Inquest that the cause could not be ascertained as the body had decompose before the test was carried out.

The Bill was sponsored by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu.

The commission when established will be charged with the responsibility of receiving and managing funds from allocation of the Federation Account for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads, houses and other damages suffered by the region as a result of the effect of the civil war in addition to ecological problems and other related environmental or developmental challenges in the Southeast states, which include Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra and Ebonyi.

The House of Representatives has requested for the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Authority (NMDPRA) to be suspended while thorough investigations are conducted into the allegations against the Authority

After Honorable Esosa Iyawe raised a motion of urgent public importance in the House regarding the immediate necessity to resolve the outage caused by what he referred to as reckless remarks from him, this action was taken.

Hon. Iyawe said, “In their defence, Dangote called for a test of their products, which was supervised by Members of the House of Representatives, wherein it was revealed that Dangote’s diesel had a Sulphur content of 87.6 ppm (parts per million), whereas the other two samples diesel imported showed Sulphur levels exceeding 1800 ppm and 2000 ppm respectively, thus disproving the allegations made by the NMDPRA boss.

“Allegations have been made that the NMDPRA was giving licences to some traders who regularly import high-Sulphur content diesel into Nigeria, and the use of such products poses grave health risks and huge financial losses for Nigerians.

“The unguarded statements by the Chief Executive of the NMDPRA, which has since been disproved, sparked an outrage from Nigerians who tagged his undermining of local refineries and insistence on the continued importation of fuel an act of economic sabotage, as the imported products have been shown to contain high levels of dangerous compounds.”

Labour Party suspends Hilda Dokubo over alleged financial misconduct

The Labour Party Chairman in Rivers State, Hilda Dokubo, has been suspended as a member of the party in her ward, Asari Toru Local Government Area of the state.

This was contained in a letter written to the Labour Party Chairman of the Asari Toru LGA and signed by the Ward Chairman, Mr Ajalamonia Ibama, the Secretary, Mr Lole Amacheer and the Treasurer, Mr Emmanuel Ibamathe.

Others who signed the letter were the Women leader, Mrs Osaki Dieypiriye, and the Publicity Secretary, Osaki Dokubo.

According to NAN, the 54-year-old actress was suspended on Thursday, after the party’s ward executive committee held an emergency meeting on July 15.

Dokubo was said to have been accused of financial misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of party regulations, among other allegations.

The ward executives said that the decision was made following a thorough investigation into these allegations,saying they reportedly uncovered substantial evidence.

She is yet to respond to the allegations.

Dangote Refinery Products Inferior To Imported Ones; Nigeria Can’t Rely On Them Alone To Avoid Monopoly – Farouk Ahmed

Farouk Ahmed, the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has cautioned Nigerians against over-dependence on products from the Dangote refinery.

Ahmed highlighted concerns over the consistency and standardisation of the refinery’s output, stating that the quality of its products was inferior compared to the imported quality products.

He addressed concerns about the nationwide supply of petroleum products and denied claims by some media outlets that they were trying to scuttle the Dangote Refinery.
He said Dangote Refinery was still in the pre-commissioning stage and had not been licensed yet. “We haven’t been licensed yet,” he added.

“I think we have about 45% completion. We cannot rely heavily on one refinery to feed the nation because Dangote is requesting that we suspend or stop imports, especially of AGO and DPK, and direct all marketers to his refinery.

“That is not good for the nation in terms of energy security, and it is not good for the market because of the monopoly.

Ahmed said that in terms of quality, Dangote’s current AGO suffers from the lowest quality in terms of sulfur content, falling short of West Africa’s requirement of 50 PPM.

“Dangote Refinery, along with other major refineries, produces between six hundred and fifty to one thousand two hundred parts per million (PPM). Therefore, in terms of quality, their products are inferior to imported ones,” he said.

President Bola Tinubu has approved a new minimum wage of N70,000 for Nigerian workers, with a commitment to review the national minimum wage law every three years.

This announcement was made by Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information, at the Presidential Villa on Thursday, July 18. The decision was revealed during an ongoing meeting with leaders of the organised labour unions.

Key figures at the meeting include Comrade Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and Comrade Festus Usifo, President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), along with several members of their unions.

The labour leaders had previously advocated for a minimum wage of N250,000.

Reps to slash salaries by 50% for 6 months to address hardship

The House of Representatives has resolved to support the Federal Government with N648 million for six months by slashing their salaries by 50% to support food sufficiency across the country and to address the high cost of food.

While making this resolution on Thursday, the lawmakers also begged Nigerians to exercise more patience with President Ahmed Tinubu’s led administration in addressing challenges and hardships faced by citizens.

The House further mandated its Committee on Appropriation, Humanitarian Affairs, Finance and Budget to ensure compliance.

TheCable contacted the UAE’s department of economy and tourism to confirm if obtaining a DVN was part of the resolutions reached.

The department said the DV hub website is not affiliated with the UAE government.

Asked if Nigerians are required to make payments for documents’ verification, TheCable was referred to Dubai’s general directorate of residency and foreigners’ affairs (GDRFAD).

“You will need a personal photo and a copy of your passport which must not have less than six months validity,” the GDRFAD said, while explaining the process for a visa application.

A tourist visa costs about 200-300 dirhams (N60,000 – 90,000) depending on the stay.

“You will also need a travel ticket and valid medical insurance within the UAE,” the GDRFAD added.

Asked about the need to have a bank balance of $10,000, the directorate said: “We are not aware of such requirements. Make your visa applications through the GDRFAD.”

Eche Abu-Obe, spokesperson for Nigeria’s ministry of foreign affairs, told TheCable that clarification on the DVN would be sought and provided from the ministry’s office in the Middle East.

Coutinho joins Vasco da Gama

Aston Villa midfielder Philippe Coutinho has joined Brazilian Serie A side Vasco da Gama on a season-long loan.
The Brazil international has been loaned out again after spending last season at Al-Duhail in Qatar.
Coutinho still has two years left on the contract he signed when he joined Villa permanently from Barcelona for £17m in 2022, six months after initially signing on loan.
The 32-year-old made just two substitute appearances last term before moving to Doha and has scored six goals in 43 games for Villa.
Coutinho, who has also played for Inter Milan and Liverpool, made an instant impact during his loan and scored on his Villa debut in a 2-2 draw against Manchester United, ending the 2021-22 season with five goals and three assists.

President Tinubu has renamed the National Theatre as Wole Soyinka Centre for Arts and Culture. The President disclosed this in a statement released to celebrate the Nobel Laureate who turns 90 on Saturday, July 13.

‘’I am pleased to join admirers around the world in celebrating the 90th birthday of Nigeria’s iconic son and the world-renowned Professor Akinwande Oluwole Babatunde, famously known as Wole Soyinka.

Tomorrow the 13th July will be the climax of the series of local and international activities held in his honour. To underscore the global relevance of the literary giant, a symposium, along with poetry reading was held in Rabat Morocco on 9 July.
