In the past months of demonstrations for Black lives, there has been a lot of hand-wringing about looting. Government officials, police officers and pundits alike have bemoaned the property damage, saying that they support “peaceful protests” but not riots. But writer Vicky Osterweil, author of the new book “In Defense of Looting,” argues that looting is a powerful tool to bring about real, lasting change to society. The rioters who smash windows and take items from stores, she says, are engaging in a powerful tactic that questions the justice of “law and order,” and the distribution of property and wealth in an unequal society.

Our assistant editor Natalie Escobar spoke to Osterweil about this summer’s riots, the common narratives surrounding looting and why “nonviolence” can be a misleading term. Find the link to their conversation in our bio.

What a week... what a month... My heart has been in a constant juggle of feeling heavy and hopeful. Reflecting on these feelings and understanding how Black Americans have been juggling the same for far too long has been at the forefront of my mind as I prepare to launch episodes of the pod (SOON, I promise).

Admittedly, this is my first year giving this holiday the attention it deserves. If you haven’t taken the time to on , PLEASE DO. Search the hashtag, hit up google, or read through my post from earlier this week. You’re a capable white person, I know it. As much as I love the social gatherings, parades, BBQs, and fireworks that come along with , this is not the day in our nations history of true .... that came 89 years later. Today deserves all the same recognition and celebration (if not more) as the federal holiday coming up in 2 weeks 🥳🎉🎊
How can you celebrate you might ask? There’s still SO much work to do in regards to ending racial injustice in the US. Consider making a donation to Equal Justice Initiative !
