Teri Garr on how she got the part in "Young Frankenstein" (1974): "I did the movie 'The Conversation' (1974) with Gene Hackman, like one scene. It was a completely straight scene. Then I got 'Young Frankenstein' after that and, yeah, that was my big break. And I went and auditioned at, like, a cattle call, 500 girls there. I think Farrah Fawcett was one of them. Everyone was auditioning for the part of the fiancee, and Mel Brooks kept saying, 'I want Madeline Kahn, but she doesn't want to do it.' She'd just done Mel's movie 'Blazing Saddles' (1974). And then finally one day, it was like my third call back, and he said, 'Unfortunately, Madeline is going to do the part of the fiancee, but if you can come back tomorrow with a German accent, I'll let you audition for the lab assistant.' I said, 'OK. Tomorrow? I have until tomorrow to get a German accent.' So I had to just jump in and do it, which I did, and it was great. It was really a great experience."

Garr has said that she based her accent on Cher's wig maker, with whom she worked on "The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour."

"I like Cher. I still see her once in a while. I see her. I don't recognize her, but I see her."

One afternoon while shooting, Anne Bancroft (Mel Brooks' wife) visited the set and told Garr that she and Mel had seen "The Conversation" the night before, and Garr replied, "Oh, yeah, that turned out to be a pretty good movie." Bancroft responded, "Honey, THIS is a movie. 'The Conversation' is a film." (IMDb)

Happy Birthday, Teri Garr!

I've always wanted this kind of freedom but, my kingdom for a follow focus assistant. Oh well, there's always something to bitch about. Lady Gaga shares the story behind “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” with The Rolling Stones:

“I was in the studio at Henson preparing for Joker, leaving to go home for the night and someone said ‘Mick wants to see you.’ I only know one Mick, so I walked down to a studio at the other end of the hall and opened the door. It was a portal to the 70s.

“I saw Mick, Keith, Ronnie. Stevie Wonder was there along with all the musicians they were collaborating with. Steve Jordan on the drums. Family & friends hanging out listening on big speakers while Andrew Watt smiled marveling at their unreleased album. We hung out for a bit listening to music and catching up. Mick then asked if I’d hang in the live room while they cut another record. I sat down on the floor, my back against a Rhodes-someone handed me some headphones and eventually a mic. Mick was towering over me smiling saying ‘go on and do your thing then.’ I listened to the music and scribbled furiously trying to learn the tune and then freestyled and sang along… trying not to step on everyone’s toes cuz Andrew had the whole room mic’d the way they did back in the day, and I didn’t want my vocals to bleed into any of the magic they’d been making. The Rhodes was vibrating furiously through my back-Stevie was playing and my whole body was shaking with every note. We played for a few hours and everyone was so excited having me there (this felt so exciting if not slightly insane). I went home not thinking much of it, I loved the song and all the musicians but I thought we were just hangin. Andrew texted me the next day saying Mick wanted to cut the vocals WITH me that night-the way he’d cut them back in the day. Same room, two mics. Single takes. I thought about Mary Clayton… Gimme Shelter…gospel and soul. I thought about my favorite old Stones tunes and all the great vocalists who had sung with Mick, making what we know now as a ‘sound’ unique to a band that defined a huge piece of rock’n’roll. Then we cut it live. Making the ‘Sweet Sounds of Heaven.’ I sang in a way I never really sang before except for with Mick. And Andrew and I both cried-there’s something about witnessing music history and when you get to be a part of it I think that’s exactly what our heaven feels like. It’s just a sweet sound.”

According to Hollywood lore, in 1968 Director John Schlesinger and Dustin Hoffman were scheduled to meet on a New York street corner to discuss a role.

Minutes tick by, and while Schlesinger is there at the agreed upon time, after a while it becomes apparent to the director that Hoffman isn't coming.

Schlesinger is furious. To make matters worse, the director is harassed by an aggressive tramp who begs in the same place.

Later, on the phone, Schlesinger yells at Hoffman for being rude.
Hoffman defends himself: “I was there and on time.”

Incensed, Schlesinger calls the young actor a liar.

"Are you kidding me?” Hoffman retorts, “The tramp on the corner was me.”

The role in question was that of a tramp. The film was three-time Oscar winner Midnight Cowboy.

Tina sneaks up on Mick smiling from ear to ear. Mick has the look of shock on his face. I think she snookered him on this move. Ironically, this move was a staple with Mick and Lisa Fisher for decades during live performances. With Mick in Tina’s spot, Lisa in front of him. Here, Tina out Mick’d Mick. Brilliant. RIP Tina. We love you and you are sorely missed.
