45 students from Lunzu Secondary School are receiving treatment at Mlambe Hospital in Blantyre on suspected food poisoning.

The three of them have been admitted for observation while the 42 have been sent back to the school campus, according to confirmed reports from the ministry of education.

Spokesperson for the ministry of education Mphatso Nkuonela says the ministry has temporarily suspended the use of all food items at the school.

In the Chilima corruption case, defence lead lawyer Kalekeni Kaphale has raised objections to allow prosecutions amend the charge sheet arguing the move is not supported by law.

Another defense lawyer Khumbo Soko has wondered why the ACB is amending the charge sheet nine months after the arrest was made.

"When arresting someone you must demonstrate that you are ready with all facts," he says.

Soko therefore has moved the court to defer plea taking until required disclosures are submitted.

University of Malawi(Unima) students have appealed to president Dr. Lazarus Chakwera to take a step into the hiking of Tuition fees

Leader of concerned university of malawi students, Charles Dokera argues chakwera must ensure that even learners from poor background enjoy their right to education

He has told Journalist in Lilongwe that the hike will have a serious impact on poor families amid the prevailing economic hardships

Unima has increased fees from MK 350,000 for undergraduate students to MK 650,000 and from MK 850,000 for mature students to 1 million kwacha. This hiking has come when some public University student are already struggling to pay tuition fees

Last week leader of opposition in parliament kondwani Nankhumwa also pleaded with government to consider revising downwards the fees but leader of the House Richard Chimwendo Banda justified the hike claiming the fees could have been higher than this if government had not negotiated with the universities

Today chilima is expected to take plea on six count,In the court , chilima pleaded not guilty to the charges before the matter was committed to the high court

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested chilima In November 2022 on allegations that he received 280,000 US dollars from Zuneth sattar to influence awarding of public contracts to his companies

Sattar who is also facing the corruption charges in a court In UK is famous for dishing out money for the awarding of public contracts to a ton of his companies in the country

High court judge Redson Kapindu is also expected to rule on an application by chilima to vary his bail condition to allow his access to his passport and that he should not be required to report to ACB ever after three months

The Ministry of Trade and Industry has warned against selleng any type of cement over the authorised price of K16 000

This follows the Ministry's recent fact finding exercise on prevailing ex factory prices. The exercise was ignited by sudden exorbitant price of the commodity in the country

The ministry wishes to warn such traders that the said exploitative conduct is in contravention of the competition and fair trading Act.

Furthermore, the Ministry says it will not hesitate to take necessary action to deal with traders found engaging in such malpractice.

Meanwhile the Ministry says it will engage the Reserve Bank of malawi so it priorities the cement manufacturing industry an allocation of forex the absence of which is reducing production

in 1987 Zambia and Zimbabwe decided to have a drinking competition. A week before the competition, the Zambia sent Benson mantanyani to Zimbabwe to confirm if the competition will be held. On arrival, the people of Zimbabwe brought 20Ltrs of their strongest brewed beer. Benson mantanyani asked if he could taste and he was permitted to. Instead of just tasting, he finished the 20Ltrs at once, and said ''This is ok 😁... Now where is the main beer?'' People were all shocked because nobody had ever taken more than 2Ltrs of this beer and stood breathing!Then they asked him, 'Are you among the competitors? Benson mantanyani said, 'Me? Nooooo! The campaign which is called "Break the Silence on Mental Health and Gender Justice" will take place from 8:30am at the Moroccan Embassy in Lilongwe.

According to reports a lot of people have committed su***de from the month of January to April this year but the majority are men.

A 16-year-old girl has been found hanging in one of the rooms at a lodge in Salima district.

According to Salima police Publicist Jacob Khembo, the girl has been identified as Vihanse Christabel Mirande from Sri Lanka.

Khembo further says the deceased is believed to have been showing signs of depression according to her father.

Mirande came in the country two weeks ago to visit her father, who works at a lodge in the district.

Postmortem from Salima district hospital has shown that Mirande died of suffocation as a result of strangulation.

MAN ARRESTED FOR MURDERING A GIRLFRIEND

A 39-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion that he killed his girlfriend in Balaka District.

According to Balaka Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Gladson M'bumpha, the suspect has been identified as Peter Mkutumula, who is also a tailor, whereas the deceased is Ruth Matewuzo aged 31 and a s*x worker.

M'bumpha further says the incident happened Sunday night at Kaumphawi Village in Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka District.

Furthermore, M'bumpha says on the particular night around 9 O'clock the suspect was seen quarreling with the deceased just before she was discovered dumped in agony behind a bar by the barman.

Following the development, the matter was reported to police who in turn took the deceased to Balaka District Hospital where she died while receiving treatment.

Postmortem conducted established that death was caused due to head injuries, secondary to strangulation and the deadbody was also found with multiple bruises on the face, head and body.

The suspect, Peter Mkutumula, who is from Mkutumula Village in Traditional Authority Makwangwala in Ntcheu District, will appear before court soon to answer a charge of murder as investigations are underway to establish the motive behind the killing whereas the deceased, Ruth Matewuzo, hailed from Mzati Village in Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka District.

Minister of education Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima has advised the Unima graduates to be creative citizens through applying the knowledge and skills they have attained during their education.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony, Wirima said the new graduantes are new human capital for the implementation of the Malawi vision 2063 which recognizes human capital development as key enabler.

However,Wirima has encouraged the graduates to be entrepreneurs as job opportunities are scarce in the country.

On Wednesday ,UNIMA has released 2,474 graduates of which 1,279 are males and 1,195 are females.

A 47 year old man of Lusu East in Sesheke District in Western Province has died shortly after being bitten by a snake.

Lush East Ward Councillor Namenda Namenda who identified the deceased as Masule Sepano told ZANIS in Sesheke today that Mr. Sepano of Matengu Village met his fate on Saturday at around 09:00 hours when he went in a thick forest with his son.

Mr. Namenda said his son rushed back to the village to get a motor bike to come and transport his father back to the village.

He disclosed that when the son arrived back at the scene he found his father unconscious and upon arrival at the village, Mr. Sepano had his last breath.

The soldiers who were missing after their boat capsized on Thuchira river have spent the night in a tree waiting for rescue.

According to Minister of Defense Harry Mkandawire these are the soldiers who were among the five soldiers and one civilian whose boat was capsized on a rescue mission

Kandawire further added that the soldiers were spotted by their swimmers last night and they manager to talk to them this morning.

It is reported that the soldiers were accompanied by a civilian who managed to swim to shore with two other soldiers with testimonies that about 100 people are trapped on the other side

Three Malawi Defense Force soldiers are disappearing after the boat they were traveling in to rescue cyclone Freddy victims was capsized by floods in Mulanje District.

Commissioner for DODMA Charles Kalemba has confirmed the development.

It is reported that there were five soldiers in the boat but only two managed to swim to the shore.

Meanwhile, a rescue mission for the three missing soldiers has not yet been launched due to the bad weather.

Police in Lilongwe have arrested 7 people suspected to have been behind a series of murder in Area 36, Lilongwe.

Deputy police publicist Hestings Chigalu has identified the suspects as Emmanuel Banda, Wyson Stevala,Brian Jeremiah, Grecian Banda, Mateyu James, Chikumbutso Jaide and David Chinyama all residents of Area 36.

Chigalu says since January Area 36 and surrounding areas have experienced strange and brutal killings of people during the night.

Chigalu further says on the night of 7 March the suspects break into a shop of Stephano Loboko and kill him before they walk away with a solar panel, welding machine and computer which they later sold it at K250,000.

The suspects have also revealed that they are behind the murder of Peter Sam aged 30 at Kandikolo location on 23 February whom they robbed K18,000 and dapped his body in a drain.

During the time of their arrest the suspects were found with car keys, ATM card, laptop bags and other items belonging to the deceased.

Meanwhile Chigalu says the suspects will soon appear before court to answer murder and robbery charges.

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has declared a state of disaster in the southern region.

This follows cyclone Freddy which has hit hard the region.

According to a statement signed by Secretary to the President and Cabinet Coleen Zamba, Chakwera is concerned with what is happening in the southern region and government has already started responding to the crisis.

Journalist Marcfarlane Mbewe who came into the limelight during the 2019 tripartite elections in Malawi has died after collapsing at work.

Reports indicate that Mbewe collapsed while making a presentation at College of Medicine in Blantyre. He was working for Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Trust.

Mbewe was working with Capital Radio Malawi in 2019 during the tripartite election period. At a press briefing which Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) held at the main tally centre as votes were being counted, he commented on the then MEC chairperson Jane Ansah’s earrings.

“Madam, you are looking good this afternoon. I like your earrings, personally,” said Mbewe before asking questions related to the elections.

A clip of his comments was shared widely on social media.

Meanwhile, people on social media have paid tribute to Mbewe following his death.

Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives-CDEDI has asked Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale to provide evidence on the rotten 10 thousand metric tones of Maize.

CDEDI has made the demand after some trucks started loading maize from ADMARC warehouses going to Mponera and Salima.

CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namibia says there is need for a physical inspection to prove wether the maize is beyond human consumption.

Ngwenya two Primary School new head teacher has returned the money that was over charged by another head teacher on primary school leaving certificate examination fees.

This follows a concern which some parents expressed to Malawi 1st headlines that the former head teacher at Ngwenya two primary school was-forcing students to pay user fee.

Upon reporting the concerns to the Ministry of Education, the head teacher was transferred.

Malawi 1st Headlines understands that standard 8 students were paying k3500 on top of the required primary school leaving certificate examination fee.
