📣 MEET THE WINNERS OF THE WHITLEY AWARDS 2024!
UK charity the Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN) recognised seven outstanding conservationists, earlier this month, with 2024 Whitley Awards for leading their communities in saving some of the world’s most fragile ecosystems and for their innovative solutions to the threats to nature in India, Brazil, Bhutan, Papua New Guinea, Guyana, Cameroon and Nepal.
The winners are mobilising action within their communities to protect biodiversity and mitigate the impacts from rising temperatures, wildfires and flooding in some of the world’s most vulnerable countries to climate change. They join a network of 220 Whitley Award alumni who play a powerful role in shaping the global environmental agenda and who have influenced more than 200 international and national policies over three decades.

Keep an eye out on May 27th, 2024, for the new feature "Cumbria's Red Squirrels", showcasing on BBC Four. Award-winning Cumbrian filmmaker Terry Abraham reveals how Lakeland charities, volunteers, businesses, and scientists are pulling together to protect the iconic native red squirrels. 🐿
Lastly, the Editor's Pick of the Natural TV Show of the month goes to "Secrets Of The Neanderthals", released earlier this month. Secrets of the Neanderthals takes viewers on a journey from their preconceptions of Neanderthals as dim-witted creatures to complex and creative people, through the lens of a unique, ongoing excavation and a landmark new discovery - the best preserved Neanderthal skeleton found in over a quarter century. Eurasian beavers have been recognised as a European protected species in England, making it illegal to capture, kill, injure or disturb them. 💚 🦫 The new law, which came into force at midnight, is good news for this extraordinary mammal which can do so much to restore wetlands across Britain. 🦫 The move limits measures previously available to "control" beavers. 🦫 Landowners will not be able to damage a burrow or dam without a license from Natural England, for example. 🦫 The National Farmers' Union had previously objected to beavers becoming a protected species, saying their dams could pose a flooding risk to agricultural land. 🦫 Beavers are now a European Protected species under The Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017.
