It was and is hard for me to believe that this was the automobile that put America on the road. It is proof that Americans will accept almost any torture and master really complicated procedures, for the sake of their mobility … Today, we pull up to a stop by removing our foot from the gas and putting it on the brakes while steering into the space. This same maneuver is accomplished in a Model T as follows: Using one hand you steer into the space; using your other hand you pull down on the throttle; using your third hand you re**rd the spark; using your fourth hand you pull up on the handbrake.

As summer approached, I was recruited to be a "volunteer" (i.e., unpaid) instructor for the Sierra Club mountaineering course. I taught the sections on things that often go wrong with the human mind and body under the stress of expeditionary mountaineering. I did not choose my subject. It was among the least popular and was assigned to me … My vivid accounts of mental and physical breakdown earned me the nickname, "Miserable MacCannell." –Dean MacCannell, 18 & OUT (now available from Bongo Books!)
