The Pandemic dreams project

Dreamed on the first night of lockdown in Brussels, Belgium, around march 15, 2020.

Albert dreams that he wakes up in his room bathed in an aquatic light. Through the window, he sees the outside world completely under water. Fish and other underwater creatures enter the room when Albert opens the window. They are swimming and yet there is no water in the room. Albert experiences a feeling of confinement but tells himself that everything is going to be fine.

A new series of upcoming ebooks, books and short animations by Cyklops Studio, PANDEMIC DREAMS is a compendium of dreams curated via email and social media submissions. During the pandemic’s many long lockdowns, sleep specialists and everyday people found that many had particularly strange and vivid dreams. We decided to illustrate some of them in ebooks and short animations.

The Covid-19 pandemic has dramatically changed daily life for many of us, everywhere on the planet. It has also impacted our nights: Many people reported having particularly vivid dreams, more striking than usual. The phenomenon has been relayed in the press (the guardian, graziadaily, cnbc, laurilowenberg) and is currently the subject of academic research.

For the members of the Cyklops Studio collective, it is obvious: Our editorial motto is to produce dreams inspired stories, obeying the narrative rules of the internal logic of these dreams. This is our niche. So, we decided to launch the Pandemic Dreams project.
The Pandemic Dreams Project

What is it? A new series of upcoming ebooks, books and short animations by Cyklops Studio, PANDEMIC DREAMS is a compendium of dreams curated via email and social media submissions. During the pandemic’s many long lockdowns, sleep specialists and everyday people found that many had particularly strange and vivid dreams. We decided to illustrate some of them in ebooks and short animations.

HOW?
If you have the memory of a particularly striking dream during the pandemic, you can, if you wish, send us a short summary by e-mail at the following address: [email protected] or as reply to our social media posts: twitter, facebook, instagram, artstation. You may also add a short text explaining how your dream relates to the pandemic or the lockdown if you feel it is necessary. We will need an email address to contact you if your dream is selected and to send you your gifts (see bottom of page). If you do not wish to be contacted , just say so in the message’s body.

-” I’m abroad, visiting my sister whom I haven’t seen in many months. She lives in a grim public housing and I do not know on which floor her apartment is.
The place is old, dark and derilict.
As I walk up the endless stairs, an elevator door opens and I see my sister coming out,
floating upside down. She doesn’t notice me and for some reason I say nothing, silently watching her float like a balloon, her long hair sweeping the dusty hallway floor.
I’m not surprised by the strangeness of the scene. What seems to really shock me is to see her
scruffy outfit and the fact that she dyed her hair red.»

That’s Solange’s dream. It is the ideal length, but feel free to write something longer or shorter. The tone is up to you: Sad, funny, strange, etc. You don’t have to give us your full-or even your real-name. If possible, the date and place of the dream is a plus. The submitted texts will be selected and the chosen ones, if necessary, will be edited (for clarity and length). Texts will preferably be submitted in English or French, but you may also submit them in your own language. If so, they will be published in this language, accompanied by a translation in English or French (so in this case the shorter the text, the better).

How Do We Choose?
The selection criteria are purely subjective: The poetic nature or the strangeness of the dream, its visual aspect, that sort of thing… The fact that our artists are inspired by the dream and that it is technically reasonably achievable, especially for the animated version, are a must. We will not post any content that we deem inappropriate but we ask you not to censor yourself first. The chosen dreams can be from children or adults, there is no age requirement. But the final product will not be a book or an animated film intended for children. That said, we may consider a future version made only of chidren’s dreams.

You may submit as many dreams as you want.

And Then What?
As soon as we have enough stories, we’ll publish a first ebook (pdf/epub) volume of 20 to 30 pages (between 8 and 15 stories) and the corresponding short animations. The ebook will be on sale on our online store ( price is still to be determined ). The money collected will be used to finance the illustrations and animations produced, and the upcoming volumes. Animated shorts will be posted on our youtube channel. We then hope to compile all the shorts into an animated documentary film, accompanied by interviews with sleep science specialists, poets and writers, researchers, testimony by some dreamers…

If our project gets enough traction, we will consider a crowdfunding campaign for the publication of “real paper books” and to finance more ambitious ultra good quality animations. We are also open to partnerships for the production of those animations (so if you’re a reasonably deep-pocketed producer/investor/media mogul, drop us a line at [email protected] !)
