NEAT- Non-exercise activity thermogenesis is the energy expended for everything we do that is not sleeping, eating or sports-like exercise.

We need to keep this in mind when training, planning and fueling. How much energy are we using during the day outside of training. On hard training days can we adjust? Do we just need to keep that in mind when fueling?

Also keep it in mind if you got a rut in your training. Our bodies do so much during the day that we don’t always realize!

“I do go to therapy because I do a lot of competitive sports”

This was a quote from one of the young runners I coach. They were talking about the dentist and other medical appointments and then casually mentioned therapy. It was so nice to hear kids talking about therapy as normally as they talk about going to the dentist.

Just another example of mental and physical health connections!

How can we help get the most out of our young athletes?

Teach them to motivate themselves- help them set goals, tracks goals. Show them how you can motivate and cheer yourself on. Lead by example!

Give them opportunities to have small wins. Fun little challenges to show them how they are improving!

Praise the process- praise them for their efforts and how they are working to achieve their goals.

These are some simple universal ways to motivate young Athletes. We can also use individual motivators for athletes that need it.

I think we can all agreed that movement and physical activity is good for kids💪
Here are some of the many reasons why…
When we start running at a young age we establish a routine for fitness. Running is something we can do as a lifelong form of fitness.
We can do it as a family. Get out the stroller, bikes, sneakers and find a road or path or grassy space and you are good to go!
When you finish a hard run you feel amazing. You accomplished something and learned that you are able to do more than you think.
Running can be an individual activity or group activity. You learn to set different kinds of goals.
Being outside and moving can make us feel good. And being able to do things we didn’t know we could will help us build confidence.

Check back each week for more reason why running is good for kids!
