In a statement, Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq., said the governor gave the approval at the Executive Council (EXCO) on Wednesday.

He noted that, “The rationalization of the MDAs is as a result of dwindling accruals from the Federation Account, which can no longer sustain the existing structure of the government.”

Ogie said the cabinet reshuffle and rationalization of MDAs led to the merger of certain ministries and re-deployment of Commissioners and Permanent Secretaries across MDAs.

According to him, “As regards the cabinet reshuffle, Andrew Emwanta has been moved from the Ministry of Communication and Orientation to the Ministry of Youths and Humanitarian Affairs, while Chris Nehikhare will now man the Ministry of Communication and Orientation.

Ogie further noted, “Okodugha Birgitta has been moved from the former Ministry of Science and Technology to the Edo State Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA).

“In the new structure, the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning has been merged with the Ministry of Finance to become the Ministry of Finance, Budget, Economic Planning and Development.

Judges’ salary: Obaseki sets up c'ttee to review fiscal implication of Industrial Court judgement

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has set up a committee comprising members of the executive and judiciary arms of government to deliberate on the fiscal implications of the Industrial Court judgement reviewing the salaries of judges and justices in the country.

The governor said this during a meeting with the Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Joe Acha, at the Government House in Benin City, the state capital.

According to him, “We have periodic reviews of activities in the state and that is why I am meeting with the Head of the Judiciary. One of the issues we have come to talk about is the implication of the recent Industrial Court judgement on the remuneration of judges.

“We had a conversation and have decided to set up a small committee composed of members of the Executive and Judiciary arms of government to review the implications of the judgment on our budget.”

On his part, Justice Acha said: “The judgement is something we all expected because judges are grossly underpaid. Just like His Excellency has said, Edo State is one family. So, we want to see how we can work together to move forward. I believe this is something that can be discussed at the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) level.

“In Edo State, we are one family. Much as there are issues with staff salaries in other states, we believe that Edo State can be a model.”

Obaseki returns from annual leave, relishes Osun PDP guber victory

… hails Edo people, PDP supporters..................................................................

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Tuesday, returned to Benin City, the Edo State capital after three weeks of annual leave, amid a rousing welcome by supporters and other Edo residents.

Obaseki was also in Osun State where he played a critical role in the victory of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ademola Adeleke in last Saturday's Osun governorship election.

The governor was received by his deputy, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, alongside other government functionaries, leaders and members of the PDP.

Shaibu acted in the governor's stead while he was away.

Obaseki said, “I think the PDP victory in Osun clearly shows that the election of 2023 is PDP's to lose. We will not take it for granted. There is quite a bit of work to do; we need to go back home to talk to our brothers and sisters and improve the spread of the party's membership.

“We are going to make sure that we come together and work together because victory is certainly ours.”

“If we could win in Osun state, I see us winning the 2023 elections and going to A*o Rock,” he added.

Hailing Edo people and PDP faithful for their undying support for his administration, Obaseki noted, “I owe PDP a lot of gratitude for letting me into the party when they did and I believe as a loyal party member, it is my responsibility to contribute my own quota to the growth and development of the party and that is exactly what we did in Osun.

“So, it's not the question of how I feel, it is a question of how we must grow our party and deepen democracy and rescue this country.”

On his absence from governance during his leave, he said, “I did not miss anything because I have a very competent acting governor who was able to cope with the security challenges, issues of flooding and all the things that happened while I was away.”

Obaseki, FG launch passport production centre, enhanced e-passport in Benin

…gov pledges to deliver Auchi passport office to Immigration Service before 2023

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki and the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, on Tuesday, launched the Benin Passport Production Centre and the enhanced electronic passport to improve passport application process in Edo State.

Obaseki, at the launch by the Nigerian Immigration Service, in Benin City, pledged to build and deliver the Auchi passport office to the Nigeria Immigration Service before the end of the year to ease the process of passport application in the state.

The governor thanked President Muhammadu Buhari and the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola for acknowledging the huge travelling population in Edo State and allowing the establishment of the passport production center in Edo State.

He said, “This action will help ease the application process, including the processing and production of passports in Edo State for the use by our residents as well as our brothers in Delta State.

“The Auchi passport office will be built by the Edo State Government before the end of the year so as to enable us ease the process of passport application, particularly in Edo North Senatorial District of the state, as well as the production and issuance of passports to Nigerians living in Edo State.”

Obaseki further noted, “We are in total solidarity with you to help us stamp out touting in our passport issuance and administration process in Edo State as we will help to disseminate the information of the new system of passport application.

“There have been complaints of lack of booklets but the Minister has assured us that this is now a problem in the past. We are happy that we have a production facility in Edo State as it will help us overcome the challenges.

“Local production of passports will ensure that value addition is done locally. This system will create entrepreneurs around the service to support the system, as moving to an electronic base doesn't mean people will lose their jobs.”

On the enhanced passport, the governor said, “The use of the enhanced passport has become the norm today as you don't see immigration officers but the machines. This is where Nigeria is going with this launch today as this will move Nigeria where it rightly belongs in the comity of nations as it relates to passport and travels.

“We have every reason to believe that with what they have put in place, we would have our passports ready within six weeks. I commend the Nigeria Immigration Service on the integration of the NIN database with the passport production process. It will curb identity fraud that we have today.”

On his part, Aregbesola said between 2019 till date, three million passports have been given to Nigerians, adding, “This year alone, 750,000 passports have been received by the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) as 625,000 have been collected.”

The minister said by December 2022, the Electronic Data Management System will be in place to take away the face-to-face interaction with humans and more humans and machines.

He warned the officers of the service not to exploit the applicants by creating artificial scarcity of booklets, noting, "Anyone that tries to exploit the people will meet stiff resistance and punishments will be melted out on erring officers. For this new system, as of today, we have 10,000 booklets to last for five weeks.

Father's Day: Obaseki lauds contribution of fathers to social cohesion, societal advancement.......................................

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has hailed fathers for their delicate role in holding the family unit together and bearing enormous responsibilities that have contributed to societal cohesion and advancement.

The governor, who made the submission in commemoration of Father's Day, said fathers' contribution to propagating the ethos of sacrifice, hard work, discipline, and love remain indelible in the sands of time.

According to him, “I celebrate fathers on this auspicious day set aside to acknowledge their gallantry, sacrifices, love and care in holding the family unit together.

“Tasked with an enormous responsibility of providing direction and instilling morals to the family and other relatives, fathers toil daily to make ends meet and joggle different roles such as mentor, leader, protector, provider and breadwinner.

“So much is expected from fathers and their efforts at ensuring stability, harmony and order are taken for granted. This is why it is refreshing that such a day is set out to pat them on the back as a way of acknowledging their efforts.”

The governor said the state government will continue to provide opportunities for decent work for fathers to meet up with their responsibilities in homes in the state, noting that the civil service reforms and increase in minimum wage are geared towards ensuring that fathers continue to play their role in homes across the state with dignity.

Fulfilled promise: Obaseki pays N40,000 minimum wage to Edo workers.......,...................................

In fulfillment of the new minimum wage regime announced on Workers Day, Governor Godwin Obaseki has paid workers' May salaries and pension, reflecting the new wage increase.

In a statement, Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie said: “The Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has approved the payment of retirees’ pension and workers’ salaries for the month of May, reflecting the new N40,000 minimum wage.

“This is in fulfillment of the statutory obligations to workers and also a reflection of the governor’s expert and judicious management of the state’s resources.”

The governor had on Workers Day announced the increment of the minimum wage in the state from N30,000 to N40,000, noting that the increase was necessary to help workers overcome the country’s overbearing economic challenges, which have caused galloping inflation among other socio-economic dislocations.

A cross-section of workers, who spoke with journalists after the payment of the new minimum wage, expressed excitement about the development, praising the governor for keeping to his word.

Mr. Jeremiah Igbinosa, a civil servant, said: “I can’t contain my joy. In all my years in the civil service, no governor has done as much as Governor Obaseki. He has shattered all records. I am in awe of his financial acumen.”

Another public servant, Mrs. Ose Okosodo, said the governor has proven to be the darling of workers not only in Edo but in Nigeria, noting that workers across Nigeria, who had been calling to confirm the governor’s announcement earlier in the month now have evidence to prove that the Governor is a promise keeper.

“We are lucky in Edo. There is no doubt. This is happening when other governors are making excuses for why they are not able to pay workers.”

N40,000 minimum wage: Group hails Obaseki, salutes commitment to workers’ welfare.........................................................................

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has been commended for prioritizing the welfare of civil and public servants as well as pensioners in the state by ensuring the review of their welfare package to meet existing realities.

Commending the governor, a pro development group, Esan Agenda, specifically hailed Obaseki for reviewing the state’s minimum wage to N40,000 and approving the immediate payment of the harmonized pension.

In a statement by the group’s convener, Mr. Akhere Obozele, said the governor has continued to prudently deploy the state’s resources in improving the lives of Edo people and engendering economic development.

He said, “Edo workers were, again, filled with ecstasy of delight when on May 1, 2022, the ‘Wake and See’ Governor announced the upward review of the minimum wage to N40,000 to cushion the effect of the country’s harsh economic realities on the workers.

“He also approved the immediate payment of the harmonized pension from the end of this month. Edo is today the only state in Nigeria paying above the federal government’s approved N30,000 minimum wage despite the little resources that accrues to the state.

“This is in addition to other efforts to improve the welfare of workers in the state, including the upward review of rates for Duty Tour Allowance and capacity building as well as in-service trainings being delivered through the John Odigie Oyegun Training Academy.”

Obozele further noted, “The governor has embarked on projects to see that workers in Edo State are provided with the right environment and tools to deliver optimal services to the people, including the reconstruction of office buildings such as the Blocks C & D of the Secretariat Complex. The governor has also pursued other reforms that have made the state’s workforce globally competitive.

“He has continued to prioritize the welfare of public and civil servants, deploying resources to improve the livelihoods of the people and making sacrifices to ensure that workers can live a better life.

“What else could Edo workers ever desire?” the convener queried.

“We want to commend and assure him of unalloyed support in realizing his vision of achieving a prosperous Edo that all citizens would be proud to be associated with. We are proud to have him as a governor and will continue to pray and support him,” he reassured.

Obaseki meets 162 PDP aspirants for Edo House of Assembly, warns against money-bag politics, bitterness............................................................................

The governor met with the aspirants alongside party leaders and other Edo PDP officials, at the Government House, Benin City.
Obaseki, who sued for unity and harmony among party members and leaders, expressed confidence that the party will come out victorious in the forthcoming general elections.

He noted, “We have 24 seats in the EDHA and 162 people are contesting; it’s not everyone that will get the position. We should be united and not be our own opponents. The way we go about this primary election is very important.

"This is the first time since 1999 that a fundamental amendment has been made to the Electoral Act. After the primary election, we have nine months to prepare and campaign and the journey will not be easy or cheap. We should conserve our energy for this process. We should work in unity to win the forthcoming EDHA election in 2023.

“We have a primary election coming up and I am not asking anybody to step down but to sit with party leaders and see how to discuss and dialogue to reduce the number of aspirants to enable us to work better. If everyone decides to go into the primary, so be it as we all belong to one big family.”

Obaseki added, “PDP will select candidates to go and contest for the position against candidates from other parties. For contestation at this level, we can't be our own opponents. In any particular constituency, only one or two people will win, depending on the number of seats. We all will rally round to support those that emerge and together we will win the election.”

Warning against politics of bitterness, the governor stated, “I want to warn all the aspirants, I don't want any of you to spend your future or sell your properties because of the election. There is a lot of bitterness in politics; we need to stop this as it can't lead us to the political evolution that we desire. Edo is a pacesetter.

“I want to stay neutral in the build up to this primary despite the several calls I have received. Every aspirant is my own; the PDP is one and my goal is that the PDP must win at the state level, National Assembly and Presidency.”

“This is the first step towards winning. I want us to be strong and not go into the contest weak,” Obaseki urged.

On his part, Edo PDP Chairman, Tony Aziegbemi disclosed that 164 aspirants bought the EDHA forms, while 162 persons returned their forms and were screened and cleared to contest the primary election.

Workers’ Day: Obaseki increases minimum wage to N40,000

…approves payment of harmonized pension from May 2022

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has approved #40,000 as the new minimum wage for workers in the state, in commemoration of this year’s Workers’ Day.

The governor, who made the announcement while delivering his 2022 Workers’ day speech, said his government will continue to prioritize the welfare of Edo workers, equipping them with the capacity and environment to deliver efficient and quality service to the people.

Obaseki noted, “As we all know, the minimum of N30,000 can barely sustain a family. It will be immoral and mindless of us to continue to pretend that we do not know that our workers are suffering.

“The government of Edo has now decided to review the minimum for Edo workers from N30,000 to N40,000 a month. Undoubtedly, Edo is the first state since the current outbreak of coronavirus to take this initiative.”

He continued: “Even though we would have loved to pay more, we hope that this little adjustment would enable us to cushion the impact of the inflation that we are faced with. There is no doubt that the financial implications will be heavy and put another burden on the government.

"But as a government, we are prepared to make the sacrifices so that the workers can live a better life. Your welfare is our number one priority.”

Reassuring his government’s relentless support to senior citizens in the state, Obaseki lamented the hardship experienced by pensioners and other senior citizens as a result of rising cost of food and other items.

He stated, “I am particularly interested in our senior citizens because they are one of the most vulnerable in our society. We took interest in payments of outstanding pensions to our pensioners in spite of the fact that these pensions were held by the previous administration.

"In view of the prevailing economic circumstances, I have now approved, effective this May, the agreement we reached with the Union of Pensioners that the harmonized amount would be paid from May 2022.

"Government is aware of the difficulties faced by the pensioners due to the non-payment of pension and gratuities to pensioners by previous governments. This responsibility is huge and it will require a substantial part of our resources to settle them.

"However, we are not a government that is known for running away from challenges; we will look for a way to tackle these challenges,” the governor added.

Obaseki however urged workers in the state to take advantage of opportunities offered by his administration in the agricultural sector to increase food production in the country.

Earlier in his address, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Odion Olaye, charged the federal government to step up efforts to tackle the high rate of insecurity, unemployment and hunger in the country.

“Candidates shall only apply for one (1) position. Multiple applications will result in disqualification.”

“Edo State Government does not require candidates to make any payments to any person or organization in respect of this recruitment exercise. Edo govt links over 600 entrepreneurs to funding, trains more MSMES on financial literacy......................................................................

The Edo State Government has pledged to sustain reforms and programmes to guarantee business growth, ensuring that businesses have access to funding and the enabling environment to succeed and contribute to the state’s economy.

The Edo State Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Cooperatives, Afishetu Braimoh gave the assurance at the opening of the second phase of the financial literacy workshop for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), in Benin City, on Tuesday.

She said the workshop, aimed at enabling MSMEs access funding to grow their businesses, is being organized in collaboration with GIZ/SEDIN-GOPA.

The commissioner said the state government is linking the first batch of over 200 successful participants to credit sources, noting, “No doubt, the second set of over 250 successful trainees will also be eligible for credit.”

Braimoh added, “During the first phase of the workshop, the Manager of the Benin Office of the Bank of Industry (BOI) sensitized participants on how to benefit from EDSG-BOI MSMEs fund worth over N2 billion.”

One of the facilitators at the workshop, Mr. Iyoha John commended the state government for creating a platform for MSMEs to acquire skills to improve their businesses, adding that the “programme also equipped participants with requisite knowledge to increase sales and expand customers’ base.”

A participant, Miss Doris Izienosa, a palm oil producer in Benin City, said “It is an inspiring moment for me as a small-scale business owner in Edo. The programme has opened my eyes to some shortcomings in my business. I feel it is a platform to learn, bringing together entrepreneurs to take their businesses to the next level.”

Obaseki gave the charge in a message to mark Good Friday, a Christian holiday in preparation for the Easter celebration.
