As an alum of the University of Chicago, news of Shaoxiong “Dennis” Zheng’s tragic death hit me hard. I could visualize the street where the tragedy happened; I could imagine the ambulance route to the hospital; and I could reflect on the painful history of the relationship between the University and the Southside of Chicago where it calls home.

It’s been incredibly painful to watch the majority of responses in the aftermath of the tragedy center on police and carceral responses. Little of the narrative is focused on true justice and healing. Little of the narrative talks about healing the pain for Shaoxiong’s family and community, the pain for Alton’s family and community, the pain for the Chicago southside community and the UChicago community, and the collective pain among all of us impacted by systemic oppression and violence.

This article explores the larger context surrounding this tragedy and affirms that we must center healing and transformative justice because we all deserve safety and community.

“Martin Luther King is dead — the victim of a white racist bullet,” so begins the Los Angeles Black Panther Party statement, “In Memory of Dr. Martin Luther King.” The Party goes forth to make three demands, translated here into Chinese, in response to the racism that took MLK’s life.

This statement was translated into Simplified Chinese by the Twitter Translate Project, a collective that translates English leftist content into Chinese. If you’re interested in their work, you can join and follow:

Manhattan Chinatown is a complex cross-section of immigrant business owners, dim sum restaurant workers, grandpas playing cards in Columbus Park—and, most recently, a new wave of second-gen Asian Americans trying to preserve their childhood memories as they watch the pandemic erode Chinatown.

There’s a lot of love for Chinatown, but also a lot of different ideas about what Chinatown needs most during the pandemic. What happens when people don't agree on what the future of their community should look like—and who exactly is Chinatown for?

Most people don’t imagine Houston’s urban sprawl when they think of Chinatown. But Houston is the most diverse city in the U.S. for a reason—and its Chinatown/Asiatown community is no exception.

Sabrina is joined by Xin Sheng Project co-founder and Houston native Sunnie Liu () as they explore the birthplace of Viet-Cajun crawfish, a Latin American grocery chain stocked with lychees and oyster sauce, and why the call to “support Asian businesses” is more complicated than it seems.

The fairness of the system to specialized and other elite high schools in has long been in question due to the decline in the enrollment of Black, Latine, and low-income students. Admission is based on a student’s score on a single entrance test—Specialized High Schools Admissions Test ( ) in the fall of eighth grade. Intentions to eliminate the as the determining factor of admission have sparked much dissent, specifically within the community.

We need to include class analysis in our discussion of anti-Asian violence! Many are quick to point out that some of our most vulnerable community members are elderly and women, but neglect to address the poverty the victims of anti-Asian violence face. As it becomes clear low-income communities are most at risk, we must acknowledge and address the class issues that put them in this vulnerable position.

While viral videos and headlines emphasize specific hate incidents of Asian Americans being attacked, they miss the root of the issue: anti-Asian violence is not individualistic, but systemic. These systemic problems not only impact our Asian diasporic community, but also other marginalized groups. How can we ensure that our activism extends beyond the 10 seconds we see on social media, and that our activism is intersectional?
