From 5-7 p.m. on Saturday Nov 1, Cumberland Trick or Treat is scheduled to take place. Following Trick or Treat, a hot dog roast hosted by Celebrate Cumberland will take place at the village park.

On Nov. 1, a spaghetti dinner and gospel sing is scheduled to take place at the Cumberland United Methodist Church. The dinner begins at 5 p.m. The Gospel Sing starts at 6:30 p.m., featuring the Love Quartet. The church is located at 441 W. Main Street in Cumberland.

The SEOJSWMD’s recycling trailer is next scheduled to be at the former Spencer Township property on Mill Street in Cumberland from Friday Oct 24 through Sunday Oct 26. There were no arrival or departure times listed. Please do not place trash in the trailer or leave items on the ground next to the trailer. The recycling trailer’s schedule is subject to change.

At 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 27, the next regular Spencer Township meeting is scheduled to take place in the township building located at the intersection of Howell and Bluebell Roads, east of Cumberland.

An amazing event takes place this Saturday at the Guernsey County District Public Library's Crossroads Branch. The 2025 Ohio Author Festival is bringing authors you love - and authors new to you - to the library from noon to 4 p.m. You can hear talks, buy books, meet authors of adult and children's books, and have a great time at your library.
NOTE: Due to a death in the family, local author Anne (Blackburne) Chlovechok is unable to attend as she will be attending a funeral. She offers her apologies for the late notice and inconvenience.

Here is what was going on in the Cumberland Area 25 years ago in October 2000.
The Cumberland Village Council heard from Byesville Net about the possibility of placing wireless internet towers on village property. (Nothing ever came from this discussion.)
It was announced that the Buffalo Fork of Wills Creek would be cleaned from SR 340 to Perry’s Den Road with a grant from the Guernsey County Soil and Water Commission.
The Cumberland Presbyterian Women were the hosts for the 2000 Fall Workshop for Area Three of the Presbyterian Women of the Muskingum Valley Presbytery.
In October 2000, the Cumberland-Spencer Homemakers were working on items to display at Cultural Arts, while the Claysville Homemakers listened to a health report on rabies and heard a lesson on diabetes.
Special guest performers at the 2000 Cumberland United Methodist Friendship Night were Silver Threads and the Green Valley Pickers.
The Spencer Township Trustees were trying to find ways to collect money for damage done to township roads by oil trucks and loggers.
October 2000 ended with another successful Trick or Treat night followed by a hotdog roast at Gracie’s Grocery. The Cumberland Activity Group served as co-hosts.

Knox Township will hold its annual fire extinguisher inspections from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Knox Township meeting hall.

Knox Township residents may bring their township-issued fire extinguishers in for inspection. If a resident does not have an extinguisher, they may pick one up at the event.

The Guernsey County Highway Department announces the following road closures:

• Beeham Run Road (County Road 57) will be closed between Beymer Road (Village of Old Washington) and Fawn Hill Drive (Wills Twp. Road 6703) from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1, for roadbed repairs.

• County Home Road (County Road 73) will be closed immediately north of Polasky Road (Wills Twp. Road 477) from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, for culvert replacement.

• Murray Lane (Jackson Twp. Road 4306) will close at Brick Church Road (Ohio 660) on Monday, Oct. 6, for bridge replacement. It will remain closed for an indefinite period of time.

At the September 2025 Spencer Township meeting, trustees Eric Poland, Mark Roberts, and Brad West along with Fiscal officer Darlene Miser were present. Bills in the amount of $26,520.79 were presented and approved for payment. Correspondence included the Ohio Township Magazine and the Grassroots Clippings legislative alerts.
The trustees discussed the chip and seal project. The only bidder declined the work because of it being too late in the year. The trustees decided to fill as many holes as they can with cold patch and work on getting a provider next spring to work on the chip and seal.
The trustees passed a resolution to accept the budget commissions allotment of funds.
The Auditor of the State of Ohio has mandated each township to create a Cyber Security Policy by September 30. The trustees passed a resolution to create the policy.
