Cumberland News
By John E. LePage, Jr.;
On Saturday Dec 21, the Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department sponsored the annual Cumberland Christmas Parade. The parade made its way through the village spreading the Christmas spirit to those gathered on the streets and watching from their homes. There were hot chocolate and cookies at the firehouse following the parade. Santa was there as well to hear the Christmas requests of children of all ages.
The parade committee gave out five awards during the line-up before the parade. The Best Car/Tractor award went to Ben Schafer Reality. The award for the VFD that traveled the furthest to be in the parade went to the Pleasant City VFD. The Best Youth Entry Award went to Avery Whited. The Most Creative Award went to Sherrie Ziler. The Best Overall entry went to M&M Feed and Beer Barn,
The members of the Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department would like to extend deep appreciation to all those who participated in or viewed the parade. They would also like to give a big shout out to the visitors from the North Pole who took time out of their busy schedule to pay a visit to Cumberland, and to all who donated cookies for the reception at the firehouse.
A big thank you from the community goes out to the CVFD for keeping the tradition of the Christmas Parade alive. It is an important event for Cumberland and the surrounding area. The parade is well into its second generation of making happy Christmas memories for the residents of Cumberland.
Everyone who ever helped in any way with the parade over the years has truly helped bless the Cumberland Area with the true spirit of Christmas. The parade along with the special services at various local church services leading up to Christmas Eve keeps the light of Christmas shining though out the village and the surrounding countryside.

As 2024 ends, it is time to look back through some of the stories that appeared in the Cumberland Items.
In January, Dale Parsons was appointed Acting Mayor of Cumberland. During the week of January 15, the house on Main Street next to the Cumberland Firehouse was taken down as part of a countywide program under the guidance of the Guernsey County Land Bank.
In March, it was announced that the Family Dollar/Dollar Tree in Cumberland would be among those closed by the company. Liquidation sale notices were posted.
The first two days of April saw storms and flooding in the area. Tornado warnings were issued for Guernsey and neighboring counties on April 2. There were tornado touchdowns reported, but not in the immediate Cumberland area. Sadly, there was reported death due to the floodwaters in Guernsey County.
Also in April, some area residents tried to observe the eclipse, but cloud cover made it difficult.
In May, Bobbers General Store, LLC, opened on South Church Street in the village. Residents were happy to see a new business in the village to help with the loss of the dollar store earlier in the year. Also, in May the Cumberland Valley 4-H Kids placed new American Flags on veterans’ graves in the Cumberland Cemetery and planted flowers at the new Spencer Township Building at the intersection of Bluebell and Howell Roads east of Cumberland. At their May meeting, the Spencer Township Trustees discussed to road slips that would be ongoing projects through September. The month of May closed out with another successful Cumberland Alumni Banquet in the social hall of the Presbyterian Church.
In August, the annual Chandlersville Homecoming kicked off the month and the month ended with CVFD’s annual Chicken BBQ and Cumberland Yard Sale Day. On Tuesday, August 2, saw a street sweeping machine in the village courtesy of EOG at no cost to the village.
In September, drought conditions that had plagued the area most of the summer caused the Ohio Fire Marshall to announce a total burning ban for the area which eventually transitioned in to the regular fall burning restriction hours. The drought level reached the most severe level. At the end of the year drought conditions are still a problem, but have eased somewhat.
On October 26. Trick or Treat took place in Cumberland followed by a community gathering in the village park.
On the weekend after Thanksgiving, the annual Bethlehem Walk took place in Chandlersville. Several activities and church services for Christmas closed out 2024 in Cumberland. We now await to see what 2025 will bring our way.
Happy New Year to all form the Cumberland News Items.

Happy Saturday! Just for fun, I thought I'd show you Monday's Christmas edition of The Journal and The Guernsey News laid out on a wall at the newspaper office. This is how we check that everything that should be in is...and look for mistakes such as the wrong date at the top of each page. No edition is perfect, but this really helps. It goes to print tomorrow after we get any last minute things that can't wait a week. Then we pick it up Monday morning and get it to you!

A Look Back at This Week in Guernsey County History
by Rick Booth

Week of December 9, 2024
Editor's Note: Through no fault of Rick's, this did not make it into print this week. We are very sorry, and will do better henceforth!

1864 - The Republicans now have everything in their own hands and Abraham Lincoln can manage the war, as he did the election, “in his own way.”

1874 - CAMPBELL’S STATION - We understand that Thomas Richie contemplates exchanging his farm, near Hartford, for the Saltsgaver farm near here.

1884 - Jonathan Rose and J. A. Doyle, of near Quaker City, went to Iowa and purchased large quantities of hay, corn, oats, and mill feed, for which there is a brisk demand in that community.

1894 - CUMBERLAND - The American Mechanics have leased the old Baptist church for five years and are remodeling the same into a very desirable lodge room.

1904 - Nothing makes your wife and daughter a nicer Christmas present than a good sewing machine. See them at Simcox’s for $15 and up. 125 North 7th street.

1914 – After rehearsal, the members of the Cambridge band went to the Brenan Drug store, corner of Wheeling Ave. and Ninth St., and serenaded the store in honor of its opening.

1924 - Preliminary tests of a gas well struck on the John S. Evans farm, near Norwich, show a production of one and a half million cubic feet of gas per day.

1934 - Harry Kahn, H-K Candy Co., discussed the business and financial conditions in his native country of Russia at the luncheon meeting of the Kiwanis Club.

1944 - Guernsey County’s Sixth War Loan drive went over the million-dollar mark with a bang on today’s report from war loan headquarters, Chamber of Commerce, when it hit $1,054,824.50.

1954 - Plans are being made to open the cafeteria at the new Garfield School in January, said Dale Thomas, superintendent of buildings and grounds of Cambridge schools.

1964 - The city has agreed to furnish engineering and supervisory help in building a 220’X200’ ice-skating rink on N. 10th Street immediately south of the Northwood Cemetery.

1974 - After 33 years of service, Paul Nugent, letter carrier for the Cambridge post office, announced he will be “hanging up his bag” at the end of this year.

1984 - Ryan Truax, Cambridge, got that perfect game all bowlers dream about while bowling for the Matthews Auto Service team at Capitol Lanes.

1994 - BARNESVILLE - Bill and Jean Davies of Barnesville have retired as editors of the Barnesville Enterprise newspaper. The Ohio House of Representatives commended them.

2004 - The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio announced the establishment of its first affiliate fund after receiving $25,000 from the Cambridge Foundation to begin the Guernsey County Foundation Fund.

2014 - Part of State Route 147 will be renamed the Navy Diver 1st Class James E. Reyher Memorial Highway in memory of deceased Caldwell native and U.S. Navy diver James Reyher.

For the past several years, the Guernsey County Junior Fair Dairy Committee has donated one of its dairy baskets to the Guernsey County Cancer Society.

This year Guernsey County Cancer Society received a check for $11,559.75 from the Dairy Committee. This will allow the Cancer Society to help Guernsey County residents diagnosed with cancer with financial aid for prescription drugs, transportation costs to doctors and treatment centers, in-home care, prostheses, wigs, and nutritional supplies.

The Guernsey County Cancer Society is very grateful for this generous donation from the kind hearts of the many bidders, helping us and supporting our youth.

Congratulations, Sergeant Kerns!

We are thrilled to announce that Sergeant Karla Kerns received an award from the Ohio County Dog Warden Association (OCDWA) for Dog Warden of the Year! Sheriff Jeffrey D. Paden of the Guernsey County Sheriff’s Office hired Sergeant Kerns as the county dog warden in November 2016, and she has been a true asset to our agency and to our community.

With her unique qualifications and dedication to animal welfare, Karla Kerns was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in August 2024. She supervises a team at the Dog Shelter, manages the annual dog shelter budget, organizes fundraisers to support the shelter, and actively engages with the community in her role.

Please help us congratulate Sergeant Karla Kerns for a job well done.
