May flowers are here and so was the cool wet weather. On our country roadway the wildflowers, bushes and trees are out in their beautiful colors. Our lawn mowers are humming as the grass has gotten greener and taller.
Our Buckeye Tree is out in full bloom- “it is the state tree”! Looking for a large crop of buckeye nuts.
Potato Patch
Due to the large amount of rainfall around Easter the planting of potatoes was a month late for the “Good Friday Planting”! It was surprising how the wind and sun dried out the ground. It was good for this old man, he got to play in the dirt!
Garden Center
The Pot House Garden Center in the heart of the Village of Winterset has recently opened their doors for the season. They have a large assortment of garden plants, flowers, bushes and all your garden and lawn needs. In the Pot House building an assortment of refurbished furniture and antiques can be found. Their hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Sunday. It may change after planting season.
Road Improvement
Hobbler Lane is getting a total overhaul. The township road is being made wider and the roadbed is being reinforced. Blacktop is being laid down for a new oil and gas well pad, a mile up the roadway.
A little history about Hobbler Lane – this was part of what was known as the “Old Steubenville Road.” This was the stagecoach route from Cambridge to Steubenville. The other end at Antrim is known as Pathfinder Lane which is closed. The improvement is funded by the gas and oil company.
Church History
A small booklet of the Antrim United Methodist Church history was located dating back to 1971. The booklet listed the names of all the minister dating back to 1817 as near as can be determined. Some of them were circuit rider ministers. Reverend Buckle was the first in 1817.
The Sunday School was organized April 27, 1862. The names of the Sunday School Superintendents and the assistants, the secretary and librarian along with 8 male teachers and 6 female teachers was included. Making this year of 2024, 162 years of teaching the Bible at the church. As the sign in front of the church said “We’re Not Done Yet”!
In November 1940 class number 7 voted to known as the Women’s Society of Christian Service (W.S.C.S.). The name has been changed to “The United Women of Faith” for today’s world.
Banquet
The United Women of Faith held their Mother/Daughter Banquet at Mr. Lee’s Restaurant in Cambridge, May 3. Twenty mothers and daughters attended the banquet with five husbands supporting the group. Rev. Coffey gave the prayer. For the program there were several readings. A taped poem by Jimmy Dean was played called “I.O.U.” It was very fitting and hit home to all in attendance.
Mrs. Coffey, a South Forrest District officer, presented the Antrim group with several certificates. She stated the Antrim unit had an outstanding rating for achievement in meeting their goals.
The group ordered from the restaurant menu. There were several door prizes handed out.

Patrol Plans OVI sobriety checkpoint this week

The Ohio State Highway Patrol announced today that Troopers will operate an OVI checkpoint to deter and intercept impaired drivers this week.

The county where the checkpoint will take place will be announced the day prior to the checkpoint, and the location will be announced the morning of the checkpoint.

If you plan to consume alcohol, designate a driver or make other travel arrangements before you drink.

Don’t let another life be lost for the senseless and selfish act of getting behind the wheel impaired.

Operational support for the sobriety checkpoint will be provided by local law enforcement agencies.
