1864 - The Republicans now have everything in their own hands and Abraham Lincoln can manage the war, as he did the election, “in his own way.”
1874 - CAMPBELL’S STATION - We understand that Thomas Richie contemplates exchanging his farm, near Hartford, for the Saltsgaver farm near here.
1884 - Jonathan Rose and J. A. Doyle, of near Quaker City, went to Iowa and purchased large quantities of hay, corn, oats, and mill feed, for which there is a brisk demand in that community.
1894 - CUMBERLAND - The American Mechanics have leased the old Baptist church for five years and are remodeling the same into a very desirable lodge room.
1904 - Nothing makes your wife and daughter a nicer Christmas present than a good sewing machine. See them at Simcox’s for $15 and up. 125 North 7th street.
1914 – After rehearsal, the members of the Cambridge band went to the Brenan Drug store, corner of Wheeling Ave. and Ninth St., and serenaded the store in honor of its opening.
1924 - Preliminary tests of a gas well struck on the John S. Evans farm, near Norwich, show a production of one and a half million cubic feet of gas per day.
1934 - Harry Kahn, H-K Candy Co., discussed the business and financial conditions in his native country of Russia at the luncheon meeting of the Kiwanis Club.
1944 - Guernsey County’s Sixth War Loan drive went over the million-dollar mark with a bang on today’s report from war loan headquarters, Chamber of Commerce, when it hit $1,054,824.50.
1954 - Plans are being made to open the cafeteria at the new Garfield School in January, said Dale Thomas, superintendent of buildings and grounds of Cambridge schools.
1964 - The city has agreed to furnish engineering and supervisory help in building a 220’X200’ ice-skating rink on N. 10th Street immediately south of the Northwood Cemetery.
1974 - After 33 years of service, Paul Nugent, letter carrier for the Cambridge post office, announced he will be “hanging up his bag” at the end of this year.
1984 - Ryan Truax, Cambridge, got that perfect game all bowlers dream about while bowling for the Matthews Auto Service team at Capitol Lanes.
1994 - BARNESVILLE - Bill and Jean Davies of Barnesville have retired as editors of the Barnesville Enterprise newspaper. The Ohio House of Representatives commended them.
2004 - The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio announced the establishment of its first affiliate fund after receiving $25,000 from the Cambridge Foundation to begin the Guernsey County Foundation Fund.
2014 - Part of State Route 147 will be renamed the Navy Diver 1st Class James E. Reyher Memorial Highway in memory of deceased Caldwell native and U.S. Navy diver James Reyher.
