Australian share market lifts, as Afterpay and Oil Search shares soar on takeover offers
The Australian share market has closed at a record high, with gains across all sectors, led by a surge in Afterpay shares.
The Australian dollar was slightly higher, buying about 73.45 US cents at 4:35pm AEST.
Afterpay was the top-performing stock on the benchmark index, marking its best day on the market since March last year.
Its shares rose 18.8 per cent to $114.80 after it entered an agreement to be bought by Square in a $39 billion deal.
Earlier in the session, it was up more than 25 per cent.
Other buy now, pay later companies also rose on the news of the Afterpay deal, including Zip (+9pc) and Sezzle (+3.7pc).
In the energy sector, merger and acquisition news was also leading to share prices rising, with Oil Search up 4.7 per cent and Santos shares gaining 0.6 per cent.
After rejecting a previous approach, Oil Search has now opened its books to Santos and has recommended its shareholders vote in favour of a sweetened $9.4 billion deal.
Santos has increased its merger proposal to $4.52 a share, up from its previous offer of $4.25 a share.
If the deal proceeds, Oil Search shareholders would own around 38.5 per cent of the combined group.
Major bank stocks helped lift the market, led by NAB (+2.4pc) and Westpac (+2.1pc).
All sectors gained ground, although materials lagged for much of the session.
Miners Rio Tinto (-0.1pc) and Fortescue (-2.1pc) ended in the red after a drop in iron ore prices, while BHP managed to make a gain (+0.4pc).
In July, iron ore on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange had its worst month since February 2020, dropping nearly 8 per cent.
Retail and travel stocks were mixed, as COVID cases continued to climb in NSW and Queensland extended its lockdown.
Mosaic (-3.9pc), Myer (-3pc) and Webjet (-0.4pc) fell, while Flight Centre (+1.3pc), Super Retail (+2.7pc) and Harvey Norman (+3.2pc) gained ground.
Despite news of a government income support package for the aviation sector, similar to JobKeeper, Qantas shares ended 0.7 per cent lower.
