Australian share market lifts, as Afterpay and Oil Search shares soar on takeover offers

The Australian share market has closed at a record high, with gains across all sectors, led by a surge in Afterpay shares.

The Australian dollar was slightly higher, buying about 73.45 US cents at 4:35pm AEST.

Afterpay was the top-performing stock on the benchmark index, marking its best day on the market since March last year.

Its shares rose 18.8 per cent to $114.80 after it entered an agreement to be bought by Square in a $39 billion deal.

Earlier in the session, it was up more than 25 per cent.

Other buy now, pay later companies also rose on the news of the Afterpay deal, including Zip (+9pc) and Sezzle (+3.7pc).

In the energy sector, merger and acquisition news was also leading to share prices rising, with Oil Search up 4.7 per cent and Santos shares gaining 0.6 per cent.

After rejecting a previous approach, Oil Search has now opened its books to Santos and has recommended its shareholders vote in favour of a sweetened $9.4 billion deal.

Santos has increased its merger proposal to $4.52 a share, up from its previous offer of $4.25 a share.

If the deal proceeds, Oil Search shareholders would own around 38.5 per cent of the combined group.

Major bank stocks helped lift the market, led by NAB (+2.4pc) and Westpac (+2.1pc).

All sectors gained ground, although materials lagged for much of the session.

Miners Rio Tinto (-0.1pc) and Fortescue (-2.1pc) ended in the red after a drop in iron ore prices, while BHP managed to make a gain (+0.4pc).

In July, iron ore on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange had its worst month since February 2020, dropping nearly 8 per cent.

Retail and travel stocks were mixed, as COVID cases continued to climb in NSW and Queensland extended its lockdown.

Mosaic (-3.9pc), Myer (-3pc) and Webjet (-0.4pc) fell, while Flight Centre (+1.3pc), Super Retail (+2.7pc) and Harvey Norman (+3.2pc) gained ground.

Despite news of a government income support package for the aviation sector, similar to JobKeeper, Qantas shares ended 0.7 per cent lower.

Listen to your kids and earn half a million from crypto

Instead of gaming consoles, 47-year-old engineer Thomas Cave’s two sons asked for cryptocurrency for Christmas.

Residents of Dubbo, Australia, Thomas and Zadie Cave - couldn’t be prouder of their two boys. If not for their curiosity and incentive, investing in cryptocurrencies would never be on the table for the family of four.

When the internet began to seriously buzz about the digital innovation, Alex (14) and Julian (17) Cave were completely enthralled by cryptocurrencies.
Unanimously, the brothers agreed that coins were what they wanted for Christmas. Inspired by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Dogecoin was the token of choice.

The unusual wish-list item turned out to be the best gift the Caves splurged on. Impressed by his sons’ passion, Thomas spent 2,691.5 AUD on Dogecoin, which at the time valued at around 0.0052 AUD per coin.

The kids ecstatically monitored the growth of Doge. And on May 7th, Julian asked his father to sell the coins. “He came to me in the morning and said Doge had gone down some, which he read could indicate an impending plunge.” Thomas listened to his son, and promptly sold their coins that evening.

Australian teacher doubles her income with new crypto service

Christine Wren became a crypto trader at 52 years old. By 55 she started to double her assets monthly thanks to investments in a newly created In wealth group.

A high school teacher, Christine Wren had nothing to do with big money before. So how did she become rich with the teacher's salary on account?

“I am old enough to have some contradictions with modern teenagers”, when it comes to values. “My students showed me the service that was in trend. There I bought some chip crypto coins as a souvenir. I thought it would improve the atmosphere, and give me tips in our daily conversations with their class. I had no idea I could earn like that, you know”, says Christine Wren.

This small talk changed Christine Wren's whole life. She started to attend crypto literacy classes, and soon gained not only her students respect, but her first money as a crypto trader as well. She received additional income, which eventually became a main one. Now she knows that Dogecoin is Elon Musk's favorite cryptocurrency and reads his Twitter to be aware of all ins and outs; teaching is her joy, while crypto trading is what brings her real money - more than $ 250 000 a year.

War is over: Australia withdrew its troops from Afghanistan

Australian troops have withdrawn from Afghanistan 20 years after the War on Terror began. But with a resurgent Taliban, many are asking what was the point?

After 20 long years, it was the end of Australia and America’s longest war, sparked by the shocking September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001.
The troops departed much earlier than flagged by Scott Morrison when he addressed journalists in Sydney back in April.

The day of Australia’s withdrawal on June 18 was like any other in Kabul as the final six Aussie troops boarded a Royal Australian Air Force C130 aircraft to fly out.

Tesla billionaire Elon Musk has backed the dogecoin meme with Bitcoin and Ethereum.

On Friday night, a tech icon criticized Bitcoin and Ethereum for being "slow" in processing power and "high cost."

Musk responded to a Youtuber on Twitter who expressed his enthusiasm for dogecoin after the new update.

"Reminder: dogecoin update coming soon!" Dogecoin influencer Matt Wallace wrote

"This will allow the Doge to become one of the most popular currencies in the world."

Musk couldn't agree with that.

Police have seized nearly £180 million (A$333 million) in the largest-ever cryptocurrency raid in the UK.

The money was discovered as part of a major probe into money laundering.

Fraud investigators received intelligence about the transfer of criminal assets before organising the raid.

A 39-year-old woman has been interviewed under caution after the e-money was seized on July 10.

The suspect, who was also held on June 24 on suspicion of money laundering offences, has been bailed until later this month.

The seizure is the biggest amount of the cryptocurrency seized in the UK and one of the largest in the world.

It tops the previous record made just weeks ago after police seized £114 million (A$211 million) in cryptocurrency.
