THE INSTINCTS: SUMMARY OF EPISODE 8

Self-Preservation is not just sensory awareness — it is the overdone focus on how one must prioritize the needs of the body and basic survival. It is the instinctual focus on getting physical needs met, the value of things, skills needed to survive, and business.

Sexual is NOT just “one-to-one” or about emotional closeness (see Social); instead, it is the overdone focus on what arouses and what repulses, and what attraction or rejection strategies are needed to become merged with a given target. This is the instinct for us to give ourselves and to take the object. Sexual is not about warm and fuzzy connection, it’s about chemistry. It will always objectify the other.

Social is NOT just a group instinct — it is what drives us to connect with others. Social is the overdone focus on the implied social law, structure, and hierarchy — it is about the boundaries that dictate how we interact and connect. Social does not necessarily “play by the rules” of society — rather, it is the AWARENESS and fixation on them. Behavior can be prosocial or antisocial.

Reviewing Episode 6:

The Harmonic groupings refer to the ways we handle problems and conflicts. There are three basic responses to such challenges: Competency, Reactive, and Positive Outlook.

The Competency triad (1, 3, and 5) reference problems with a sense of level-headedness, aiming to address the facts to find their way to the other side. This is an overly collected response to problems.

The Reactive triad (4, 6, and 8) want everyone to be real with their emotional realities. This tactic to problem solving is messy and honest, willing to shove it all out on the table for the sake of resolution.

The Positive Outlook triad (7, 9, and 2) prefer to avoid issues in the hopes that they will go away. They all are reframing what feels negative into some positive perspective. This technique forces them all to deny reality to some extent.

Episode 5 review !

Those arrows connecting all 9 points describe the movements in stress and health that connect the Enneagram.

The health point we move to when things are easy, good, and we have the chance to see our autopilot neuroses clearly. We learn something here that the default neurosis does not intuitively know.

The stress point we move to when under duress, our neurotic cycle ceases to sufficiently cope with problems. The stress point acts as a detour for the neurosis to return to its preferred route.

Movements show how the Enneagram is a system of 9 interconnected problems, but we still hold fast to a core neurosis.

Here’s the recap on Episode 4 if you didn’t have the chance to listen:

The theory of Object Relations refers to the affect response to a wound from either the Nurturing Object, the Supportive Object, or both.

The Aggressive neuroses build an ego around the Nurturing wound.

The Dependent neuroses build an ego around the Supportive wound.

The Withdrawn neuroses build an ego around both wounds (also referred to in combination as the Belonging wound).

7, 1, and 4 are the Frustration Triad, aware of a sense of what they needed and what they did not get. They then form an ideal world that they can never quite access. This ideal represents the sufficient Nurture and/or Support they did not receive. The Frustration response is to abandon the insufficient and pursue the ideal.

2, 5, and 8 are the Rejection Triad, fixated on denying the need that felt wounded. Rather than acknowledge that someone wounded them, they choose to sever the parental function where the wound occurs. They in turn must become an extreme representation of their dominant Center (2 becoming the most Heart-y, 5 the most Head-y, and 8 the most Body-y).

3, 6, and 9 are the Attachment Triad, intent on adapting themselves to stay attached to the source of the wound. This means they are dominant and repressed in the same Center, and they must fake themselves out with a false version of that given Center (for 3 the Heart, for 6 the Head, and for 9 the Body). They then lose sense of the true self.

After some technical inconveniences, we can officially announce EPISODE 4 (link in bio):

Melea and Jack talk about the theory of Object Relations and how it connects to the Enneagram. The theory outlines the dominant affects of Frustration, Rejection, and Attachment as coping responses to childhood wounds.

Your Episode 3 recap on Stances:

Every neurosis is formed by the repression of one of the three Centers of Intelligence: body, mind, or heart.

The repression of a given Center then determines our level of engagement and how fast we process reality.

The Withdrawn Stance (4, 5, and 9) repress the body, meaning they are insufficiently engaged with the world, defaulting to observing from the PAST. These neuroses underestimate the impact of their actions on the world.

The Dependent Stance (1, 2, and 6) repress the mind, meaning they engage with the world through a space of PRESENT duty and obligation, struggling to act from their own mind’s true agendas and desires.

The Aggressive Stance (3, 7, and 8) repress the heart, meaning they engage with the world through the assertion of their own FUTURE plans and agendas, but they struggle to access the emotional realities that they and others feel.
