The Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit on February 26th challenging the $24.6 billion proposed Kroger-Albertsons merger, a deal which could unite the two largest supermarket chains in the U.S.

The complaint, filed in an Oregon federal court, cited harmful impacts of a successful merger on consumers, including increased grocery prices, and decreased quality and services.

Henry Liu, Director of the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Competition underscored these impacts in a press release published by the FTC, also noting the effects the merger would have on grocery store workers, who he claims would face dwindling wages and benefits.

“Kroger’s acquisition of Albertsons would lead to additional grocery price hikes for everyday goods, further exacerbating the financial strain consumers across the country face today,” he said, “Essential grocery store workers would also suffer under this deal, facing the threat of their wages dwindling, benefits diminishing, and their working conditions deteriorating.”

Phil Weiser, attorney general of Colorado, already sued to block the merger earlier this month for violating state antitrust laws. Kroger currently controls roughly half of the supermarkets in Colorado, operating 148 stores under the King Soopers and City Market banners; Albertsons operates 105 stores in Colorado under Safeway and Albertsons banners.

Get your popcorn ready, because the 2024 Academy Awards are just around the corner!

Sunday award shows are coming to a close, with the ultimate accolades taking place on Sunday, March 10. All you need is your access to your preferred choice of viewing, a subscription to ABC, and your self-proclaimed predictions.

If you are someone like me who religiously follows the Oscars and is encapsulated with curiosity, then you have most likely looked up the projected winners of each category at some point before the awards air.

I will happily admit that every year I test my own luck with what movies and celebrities I believe will win. In doing so, I have noticed that there is a certain glory in being right in my predictions. Along with getting my own guesses right, an additional thrill was captured as I started to read more Oscar prediction stories from publications such as Variety, Vanity Fair, and Entertainment Weekly. As the awards began airing, I discovered that almost 100% of the time the predictions I had read became true right in front of my eyes.

“A lot of people in college will think they are just living the college lifestyle, they won’t realize until they leave that they have a problem.”

This was my brother’s warning to me about drinking before I left for college. I didn’t realize how true this would ring until I attended one of the largest party schools in the country —CU Boulder.

Boulder is starting to refurbish public image from its blanket ban with the upcoming release of a new project: Homelessness Day Services Center.

The Colorado Department of Local Affairs received $1.3 million for the Homelessness Day Services Center and related services for Boulder’s unhoused population in early 2023. The center is projected to be fully operating later this winter to serve unhoused individuals 24 hours, seven days a week.

“The size and scope of services will be new for Boulder,” said Megan Newton, Homelessness Policy Advisor.

Individualized outreach for unhoused individuals to escape homelessness from the center is touted by the City of Boulder. The center plans to concretize a path of permanent housing and foster a multiplicity of services in a single location for unhoused individuals. But, is this too far-fetched?

If you’re still looking for a job or an internship this summer, odds are the search isn’t going well. Hiring timelines have moved up so much that sophomores are interviewing for internships that don’t start until the summer before their senior year, and it’s not unheard of for some firms to open applications two full years in advance. With this acceleration, students have less time to flesh out resumes and experiences in advance, and must rely more on soft skills and professional networks. With this development, students are subject to all manner of career advice from friends, parents, and university staff.

I remember my high school graduation party, wherein 10 adults told me I was about to enter “the best years of my life.”

They reminisced about their college days and although it seemed to be an exercise they did more for themselves rather than me, I was still interested. They recounted late nights with their fraternity brothers, football games, relationships, parties and pretty much anything else you could find in the movie 22 Jumpstreet.

They would go on to discuss how they met their closest friends in a 100-person lecture hall or bumped into their future spouse walking on campus.

“Those really were the days.”

These are things that would never happen today– at least to me.

If someone were to approach me in a lecture hall for casual conversation, I would be so confused that I would slowly back away with my arms in the air, as if thwarting a bear attack.

Obviously, I am being facetious (sort of), but it does seem like today’s college experience is… lonelier.

I thought these four years of my life would be like living in a 90s movie — a montage of football games, chatting in lecture halls and doing homework outside under large trees.

But what happens if these don’t feel like “the good ‘ol days?” And why don’t they feel like that? Shouldn’t each day feel that way, given the debt that many of us are in, partially because we want “the college experience?”

Is the desire for a dream college experience preventing us from really enjoying the “best years of our lives”? Click the link in our bio to read more.

Things are not going according to plan for Shara Zaia. It’s a Friday morning in late October and what’s supposed to be an important weekend for the climbers of Cruxing in Color is threatened by predictions of a coming snowstorm and bone-chilling, finger-numbing cold.

Zaia continues on from Denver toward Cañon City, where an iconic wall of limestone rising from a valley has become famous among climbers for its accessibility, quality holds, and endless number of routes for climbers of all levels.

Many things have complicated Zaia’s work since she and Menesha Mannapperuma founded the nonprofit Cruxing in Color (CIC), which will be participating in the American Alpine Club’s Craggin’ Classic this weekend. As she drives, she thinks through the list of those she knows are coming, what their goals are, and what type of climbing experience they have.

For Zaia, setting the intention for each event in advance creates a successful and supportive atmosphere. As a former teacher, Zaia also understands how things can quickly change and the importance of adapting to what people are feeling on that day.

The Craggin’ Classic has space for everyone. New and experienced climbers are welcome.

Introductions are made and the sun begins to peek out from the clouds. Relieved, Zaia announces to the group, “Well now that the sun is out, I think we can try to go climb!”

Historically, joy as an activistic tool has been underscored by more mainstream forms of protest like pride, anger, and outrage. However, in her new book, Kristie Soares, assistant professor of women and gender studies and co-director of the LGBTQ studies certificate program at the University of Colorado, talks about the importance of joy in Latinx media and its importance in political work.

“To take joy seriously as a political tool and to take seriously the people that enact it,” remarked Soares. “But beyond that, I think to take seriously affects, feelings, and emotions.”

Soares started her research as a way to explore how joy is employed in media produced by the Puerto Rican and Cuban diaspora, aiming to change dominant narratives about gender, sexuality, race, and class.

After two months of recruitment, the University of Colorado’s search committee for a new Boulder chancellor is preparing to interview candidates for the top campus job.

Chancellor Philip DiStefano announced he would step down from the role he’s held for almost 15 years in late September. The university system then formed a group of 21 campus stakeholders who have led the hunt for DiStefano’s replacement.

More than half of the search committee members are university staff, faculty or students. All have signed non-disclosure agreements relating to their involvement in the search process.

“February is really the time when the rubber hits the road for the committee,” said Danielle Radovich Piper, the committee’s chair and the university system’s senior vice president of external relations.

Radovich Piper said university leadership hopes to announce the finalists, or finalist, for the position the week of March 18.

“But that’s an ideal timeline. You never know what can happen during these processes,” she said.

When people think of Boulder, Colorado, what usually comes to mind is the pristine nature and the accepting atmosphere that welcomes guests and students alike. What is often overlooked or unnoticed is the severe lack of diversity within the population of this community, specifically within the university setting.

The University of Colorado Boulder has a massive student body. With the number of students reaching close to 40,000, one might think the racial makeup of this school is one that is filled with diversity. In fact, that is not the case.

When asked about the challenges of fostering a welcoming communal environment for Black students at CU Boulder, Assistant Athletic Director for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Craig Cook said “The thought is that there is no community here, but that is not true. It is just very small.”

“Our community goes on campus, tries to find their footing, and once they get that footing, a part of that community leaves because they believe there is no community here at all,” Cook stated. “Being an imposter is tough, you have to turn on and off everywhere you go until you go home, walk into the house and slam your door and can be yourself.”

Chicken on the Hill — the wildly popular bar and restaurant among CU students — was forcibly shuttered Monday morning in a shocking seizure of the business and its assets by Colorado tax authorities.

Colloquially known by students as “Chicken,” the eclectic fried food joint and full-service bar describes its now ceased operation as “the place where great cooking and fantastic vibes meet.”

However, despite Chicken's widespread popularity in the community, the 13th Street property was seized by the state of Colorado for nonpayment of taxes totaling over $25,000.

Further investigation by The Bold confirms that Chicken on the Hill and its parent entity, Penko Corporation, failed to produce annual business and financial reports required by Colorado state law at least 4 times since its founding in 2019.
