Most of us know that ancient Tamizh Makkal used various kinds of measurements. They have measurements for number counts(even upto ten power 35!), balance weights, fluid volumes, grain volumes, and also they have length, time measurements too. You can find these references in Tamil literatures.

They also have terms to measure things that they regularly use in their households too. It was more like a mind calculation. And these words I listed above are the ones that I come across often in our locality even now.
•
Especially these can be heard in local markets where people use these terms to denote the approx quantity of the products that they want to buy. Even though I haven’t heard about these terms being mentioned anywhere in the Tamizh literature, it has been in the colloquial usage for so long in the state.

எ.க :
1. அண்ணா, ரெண்டு கவுளி வெத்தல குடுங்க.
(1 கவுளி - 100 வெற்றிலை)
2. கடைல இருந்து ஒரு சிப்பம் அரிசி கொண்டு வா பா.
(1 சிப்பம் - 25 கிலோ)
3. மல்லிப் பூ நாலு முழம் எவ்ளோங்க?
(1 முழம் - ஒருவரின் முழங்கை அளவு)

We love reading it together and it makes me nostalgic to read our evergreen shloka's to my little one.
Aadhira never gets tired of listening to the shloka's and looking at the cute illustrations. Also she now knows all the God's & Goddesses names.

Btw, hear her identifying most of the god names.
She identifies Lord Anjaneya as 'Hanuman, Anjaneyar, Mona' ❤
(Mona is the name of her Monkey toy, wondering how instantly she related them😍).
She also loves saying 'Vadivel Muruganukku, Arogara' , 'Shiva shiva' and love finishing the shloka's with her own cute Mazhalai sentences 🙏
Once we finish reading, we say "Bye book" and keep it aside 😂😍

I love rain. And heavy rain is my kind of rain. I am blessed to live in a place where I can witness such heavy rains more often. But whenever I try to put into words or try to describe someone in Tamil about the Magnificence of a heavy downpour that I enjoyed, all I could think about was these above mentioned phrases or simply "கனமழை". These phrases are fun to use in our everyday Tamil but I feel these words just doesn't do justice to the grandness of a rainy day ! At least not in a poetic way. And I wonder how our sangam period Tamil makkal phrased a பெருமழை day and also much intrigued to know about these references in the Tamil Literature. Hopefully I’ll come up with a follow up post soon after some research🧐
