Thirty years ago today, the Berlin Wall fell.

"With one hand holding the candle, and the other shielding the flame, there were no hands left to be raised in violence."
--Pastor Christian Führer, talking about the peaceful demonstrations in Leipzig just before the fall of the Wall.

Those demonstrations, stating with a handful, grew to millions of brave people across East Germany, who faced down their oppressive government, and brought about a revolution without firing a shot.

Today, along with the people of a unified Germany, we celebrate the day the gates opened to the world.

Twenty-nine years ago tonight, facing growing crowds at Bornholmer Straße border crossing, Harald Jäger, acting alone, MADE THE DECISION to lift the gate between East and West Germany.

This was the moment the Berlin Wall actually opened. One brave man, surrounded by thousands of brave people, changed the world. Within one hour, over 20,000 people crossed at Bornholmer Straße.

Twenty-five years ago today, the Berlin Wall fell.

Countless amazing stories. For me, the most significant is about Pastor Christian Fürer in Leipzig. His weekly prayers for peace led to peaceful demonstrations, whose numbers grew from a handful to over 300,000. Not a single shot fired. These demonstrations were key to East Germany's peaceful revolution.
