Does 2021 have a return policy?

Get ready for some real talk as we discuss hybrid learning, teaching among political unrest, and trying to stay positive while 2021 is shaping up to be a bigger dumpster fire than 2020.

When is the last time you asked yourself how you were *actually* doing?

P.S. - thank you to all of our listeners that stuck with us through 2020, we couldn’t have gotten through the craziness without you.

Let’s be real—2*2* was a total dumpster fire.

But we’re walking into this new year with a lot of cautious hope and optimism; for our students, for you, and for ourselves.

And crewnecks. We’re walking into this year with those too.

Let’s do this, 2021.

Long time no talk! We are BACK with our Season 2 Premiere episode and a *new look*!

In the past 2 months, we have both started virtual learning, presented at a State Education Conference, Catie has started a marching band season, and we have had MANY late-night “What do I do?!” phone calls.

Now that we have a moment to breathe, we are here to dissect all of these feelings with you and talk about how we are handling teaching during a pandemic.

In the meantime, Alexa, play “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor. Episode 1 of Season 2 is now available wherever you get your podcasts!

Missed us? Do we have an episode for YOU.

We had the absolute joy of getting to chat with Dr. Kevin Shorner Johnson, Associate Professor of Music Education and the Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. Dr. Shorner Johnson has channeled his passions of peacebuilding and spirituality to create a teaching philosophy that prioritizes social emotional learning, imagination, and self care. He used this philosophy to pioneer the nation’s first Master of Music Education (M.M.E.) degree focused on the study of peacebuilding, social-emotional learning, and world music drumming at Elizabethtown. A fellow podcaster, he hosts Music and Peacebuilding, which encompasses a community of music educators seeking to reclaim space, connection, and care. Trust us--you do NOT want to skip this one!

You can find Dr. Shorner Johnson, learn more about his incredible work, and listen to his podcast here: https://www.musicpeacebuilding.com

Episode 2 of Tutti: A Podcast for New Music Educators is now available wherever you get your podcasts!

Now more than ever, we as educators need to create spaces for our marginalized students and let them know that we are here to support them. The current movement is NOT an issue of politics- it’s an issue of human rights. As music educators and artists, we have a responsibility to not treat our classrooms and the current happenings as separate entities. We MUST do the work necessary to be allies. That’s why we were so humbled and honored to speak with our very first guest, Dr. Brandon Williams of Rutgers University.

Dr. Brandon Williams is currently an assistant professor of Choral Music and Music Education at the Mason Gross School of Music. He teaches multiple courses related to choral music education and conducts the Rutgers Voorhees Choir. Dr. Williams is a guest conductor, clinician, and presenter all around the United States.

The following are resources on allyship that Dr. Williams references and recommends during this episode:

MEET YOUR HOSTS!
Catie & Haley are unbelievably excited to launch episode 1 tomorrow!
So, who are they?

Catie is a 23-year-old first-year band director, who spent this past year as the Director of Bands in North East Maryland. Fall of 2020 she will be moving to be the Director of Bands in Central Delaware, where she will teach wind ensemble, jazz band, music theory, and direct the marching band. Catie is a proud 2019 graduate of the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and is a clarinet player by trade. The ensembles she has performed in (collegiate level wind ensemble, orchestra, and drum corps) helped shape who is is, and her goal to be a band director. Catie is passionate about the marching arts, conducting, leadership development, and advocacy within her ensemble and for her students. She loves laughing, making music with her students, and being an avid supporter of all arts.

Haley is a 23-year old first-year orchestra director in Southern Maryland at two high schools, where she directs four performing string ensembles, as well as working as a color guard instructor for a high school marching band. Haley graduated from the University of Delaware in 2019 with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education with violin as her primary instrument. Haley is committed to providing meaningful musical experiences for her students and guiding them to be better humans in society through the medium of music. She hopes to continue fostering a passion for leadership and an appreciation of the human connection in her ensembles for years to come. In her (little) spare time, she likes to bake, play soccer with her 5-week old kitten Banjo, and spend time connecting with the important people in her life.

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week from us to you!

We are thankful for the educators that inspired us to become teachers ourselves. We encourage you all to reach out to any teachers that impacted you; write a letter, send an email, give them a call - any way to let them know they are appreciated.

Sending all of the love and support to the educators that are teaching remotely - your job is vital, you are important, and we will make music with our students again.

We are SO EXCITED to announce Tutti: A Podcast for New Music Educators! This podcast is geared towards new music directors and students who are preparing to enter the field. When we graduated college and dove into high school music positions, we had questions we didn’t know we needed to ask, ideas that we weren’t sure how to execute, and advice we wish we were given. We didn’t know how to invent a time machine, so this was the next best thing. We’re excited to welcome successful music educators from all walks of life to speak on their experiences for the next generation. Let’s create a community of support and empowerment through the thing we love most: teaching music!
